(1-3) A Coruña On 1.1 there were a drake and two females at ensenada da Insua, Ponteceso, A Coruña, all these three birds coming from December 2008 (Jordí Martí Aledo).Still present on 2-3.1 (Jordi Martí-Aledo, Xavier del Acebo, Miguel Rouco, Juan Sagardía).See a photo below (Miguel Rouco). Presumed hybrid American Black Duck Anas rubripes x Mallard Anas platyrhynchos & Pure American Black Duck (1-2,3)

(1-2) Lugo. There were two hybrids at Ría de Foz, Lugo on 4.1, but Pepinho, the pure drake, was not seen (Miguel Rouco, Juan Sagardia). One was still in the area on 10.1 (Antonio Ceballos, Luis José Salaverri y Javier Cantil). This one was relocated on 17.1 (David Calleja Marcos; Luis Mario Arce,Víctor M. Vázquez y Teresa Sánchez Corominas)
(3) Lugo. The pure drake 'Pepinho' was found again on 10.1 at Ría de Foz, Lugo (Antonio Ceballos, Luis José Salaverri y Javier Cantil). Pepinho was relocated on 17.1 (David Calleja Marcos)

(4) Asturies. The drake relocated on 26.12.2008 remained at Embalse de San Andrés, Gijón, Asturies, on 1.2.1(Daniel López Velasco) and 4.1 (Daniel López-Velasco, Óscar Llama) to 5.1. (1) A Coruña One was found at A Frouxeira lagoon, Valdoviño, A Coruña on 20.1 (Antonio Gutiérrez). This lagoon holds other three nearctic birds: Lesser Scaup, Ring-necked Duck and Blue-winged Teal, all seen also on 20.1 (Pablo Gutiérrez). The third for Spain after a bird at Gipuzkoa in 1999 and another from Galicia in 2003.Seen again later on 20.1 (Jose Miguel Pumar y Ricardo Hevia), on 21.1 (Pablo Gutiérrez; Pablo Fernández, Daniel López Velasco, Clemente Álvarez Usategui, see thumbnails here) and 22.1 (Antonio Gutiérrez) when properly photographed (see below). (1) A Coruña On 20.1 a bird was seen and photographed at Baldaio, A Coruña (José Luis Fernández Carnero). See a photo below (J.L.Fernández Carnero) and another in flight at the Rarebirdspain blog here.The bird had been seen on 18.1 in the same area (Xosé Manoel Carregal, José Antonio de Souza) but it went unnoticed while carrying out the winter wildfowl count and it was identified after the 20.1 observation. Not relocated.There could be a previous record from 1879 which has not been verified, neither accepted or forming part of tbe Spanish B list, of a bird hunted in Doñana by Lord Lilford (see this link for a pdf of the original book- Ventura de los Reyes y Proper, "Catálogo de las aves de España, Portugal e Islas Baleares" de 1879-, in Spanish. (1) A Coruña On 18.1 a yellow-legged wader was found the previous week at Ensenada da Insua, Ponteceso (Nacho Castelao) was apparently still in the area (communicated to José Luis Rabuñal). This bird was initially reported as Lesser Yellowlegs (N.Castelao) but on 31.1 it was properly identified as Greater Yellowlegs (Manuel Quintana, Conchi O. Ania, Serafín Glez. Prieto y Alejandra Couto Vázquez).

(1) Málaga The presumed Baltic Gull seen at Málaga harbour on 16.12.2007 and february 2007 too with ring 'C1KV' was seen again at the same place on 10-11.1.2009 (Salvador García) for its 3rd consecutive winter visiting the area. This bird had been ringed at Tampere dump, Finland (61.54N, 23,9E) as probably female >2cy by Risto Juvaste and has been seen multiple times in that place since then (R.Juvaste). (1-3) Lugo. There were 3 1w at Lago beach, Lugo on 3.1 (Daniel López Velasco, Óscar Llama, Ricardo Hevia). One of the birds was carrying a Polish ring (first photo below, ©D.López Velasco, and thumbnail here © Ricardo Hevia). On 4.1 one of the three birds was seen and photographed again (Ricardo Hevia). See photos of the three below and thumbnails here. Two birds (one was the ringed individual) remained on 4.1 (Miguel Rouco, Juan Sagardia) and one on 5.1 (Carlos Gutiérrez Expósito). The ringed bird was seen again on 10.1 (Ricardo Hevia). And another unringed on 17.1 (Salva Solé, Sara Sánchez, David Calleja, Ricardo Hevia). (1) A Coruña On 1.1. there was a 1w at San Pedro islands, A Coruña city (Xabier Varela).Seen again on 11.1 (Xabier Varela)
(2) A Coruña. A 1w was at playa de Langosteira, Finisterre, A Coruña on 1.1 (Fernando Pereiras).
(3-7) Lugo. There were at least FIVE birds at Lago marshes/beach, Xove, Lugo on 3.1 (Daniel López Velasco, Óscar Llama, Ricardo Hevia). See a photo below and thumbnails here. On 4.1 at least there remained four (Miguel Rouco, Juan Sagardia).One of the birds was still around on 10.1 (Ricardo Hevia). Perhaps one of these birds was seen at San Ciprián harbour also on 10.1 (Ricardo Hevia).On 10.1 at least one remained in the Lago area (Antonio Ceballos, Luis José Salaverri, Ana C. Narcisoy Javier Cantil). See a thumbnail here (Antonio Ceballos). But two of them were seen on 16.1 (Ricardo Hevia) with another one at San Ciprián, Lugo the same day. (19-22) A Coruña. On 31.1 there were four at Camariñas harbour: one adult and 3 2nd winters (José Luís Rabuñal). At least the adult and 2 2w were seen later that day (Ricard Gutiérrez, Sergi Sales, Jordi Martí-Aledo). One had been seen earlier in the day (Manuel Quintana, Conchi O. Ania) and two 2w the day before (Anton David Pérez, Javier Gomez Aoiz).

New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex, Sterna bengalensis and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and are not be included from 2006.



Recent reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent. Gibraltar news are included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with anew icon. We would welcome to receive a spare copy of those journals using these news for commercial purposes. Contact RG at address at the front page. From April 2005 only news of rarities needing homologation by the Spanish Rarities Committee are included.
