(1) Cantabria. A bird coming from late august was seen again at Santander bay on 19.11 (Yves Borremans) and 25.11 (Alejandro García-Herrera).
Bean Goose Anser fabalis (1)
(1) Palencia On 23.11 one rossicus was at Laguna de Boada, Palencia (Fernando Jubete y Antonio Herrero / Casa Museo de la laguna de Boada Fundación Global Nature).
Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus (1-2,3)
(1-2) Asturies The birds present in October at ría de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies were seen again on 7.11 at the same place (Adolfo Villaverde; Daniel López Velasco, César Álvarez Laó, Marco García, Ricard Gutiérrez; Luis Mario Arce & Belén Alonso) and 9.11 to 14.11 and 16.11 (Luis Mario Arce & Belén Alonso)to 30.11(Luis Mario Arce & Belén Alonso) .
(3) Palencia. One was seen and heard at Laguna de Boada, Palencia on 21.11 (Enrique Gómez Crespo) and 28.11 (Carlos Nazario)
Canada Goose Branta canadensis (1,2)
(1) Palencia On 5.11 one was at Laguna de Boada, Palencia (Casa Museo de la laguna de Boada Fundación Global Nature). Seen again on 15.11 (Juan Miguel Cid)and 19.11 (Casa Museo de la laguna de Boada Fundación Global Nature).
(2) Bizkaia. On 22.11 one was seen flying over El Abra, Santurtzi, Bizkaia (Gorka Ocio).
Pale-bellied Brent Goose Branta bernicla hrota (1)
(1) Cádiz On 24.11 a bird was seen in front of Salinas Dolores hide, Cadiz bay Natural Park, Cádiz (Xurxo Pinheiro)

American Wigeon Anas americana (1-2)
(1-2) Asturies On 27.11 at La Linera, ría del Eo, Castropol, Asturias a female was reported with a presumed hybrid drake Anas penelope x americana associated to 59 Anas penelope and all being well seen (Luis Mario Arce). Caution is needed with presumed hybrid drakes since some pure penelope can show green marks in head sides (ed. comment).

(1) Asturies The hybrid drake rubripes x platyrhynchos seen at ria de Villaviciosa, Asturies on 10.10 was still there on 7.11 and 16.11, when three photos were obtained (see their thumbnails here) (Luis Mario Arce, Belén Alonso)to 30.11(Luis Mario Arce & Belén Alonso) .

(1) Navarra On 2.11 a drake was found at Sangüesa, Navarra (Javier Sola). It remained the following day (José Ardaiz). See a thumbnail here.
2) Pontevedra. On 22.11 a female was discovered within a flock of 126 Pochards (Aythya ferina) at As Eiras reservoir, Fornelos de Montes/Ponte Caldelas (Óscar Martínez Roza). Still there on 25.11 (Ó. (1) León On 1.11 a drake was found at Selga de Ordás reservoir, León (Carlos Zumalacárregui). Last year 1st sighting was on 2.11.2007 (ed. comment).
(2) Asturies. On 15.11 a drake was found at Embalse de San Andrés, Gijón (Daniel López Velasco, Adolfo Villaverde). Seen later by other observers (Manuel Quintana, Xuan Cortés, Nacho Vega,Marco García, Jose Antonio Larriba,

(1) Cantabria. A female frigatebird was seen 5-8 nautic miles off Santander, Cantabria on 9.11 (Álvaro Díaz, Felipe González, Aitor Rincón y Carlos García). Hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta and Pure Western Reef Egretta gularis (1,2,3)
(1) Murcia. A pale grey bird that was first found on 31.10 in the company of 12 Little Egrets at the 'Desembocadura de la Rambla de Albujon', Cartagena, Murcia (Lat. 37.715982, Lon. -0.859382) was seen again on 1.11 at the same place (Richard Howard, Antonio Fuentes Marín and Inés Chamón Férnandez).
(2) València . A bird was seen on 24.11 at El Tremolar ricefields, Valencia (Bosco Dies), see a photo below (B.Dies). Probably the same bird last october in the Albufera area. Photo above:© Bosco Díes. 24.11.2008
(3) Tarragona. The hybrid present around La Tancada lagoon was seen at the former fishing farm ponds on 27.11 (Ricard Gutiérrez). See a thumbnail here.

Rüppell's Vulture Gyps rueppellii (1,2)
(1) Alacant One bird was trapped and ringed at Sierra de la Mariola, Alcoi, Alacant presumably around 12.11 when the news were broadcasted at Las Provincias newspaper. The bird is wingtagged with a yellow mark on its right wing with BLX letters (as seen from the photo) (Fapas Alcoi)
(2) Cádiz. On 19-20.11 a new individual of Rüppell's vulture was located at the Tarifa area, Cádiz (Miguel González. Pako Zufiaur y Javier Elorriaga /Fundación Migres). See a thumbnail here.

(1) Cádiz There was one at the Tarifa area, Cádiz on 19-20.11 (Miguel González. Pako Zufiaur y Javier Elorriaga /Fundación Migres). See two thumbnails here
(2) Sevilla. One was reported from the Osuna area on 21.11 (Antonio Miguel Pérez, Quirri, Lupi, Blas López y Gonzalo Lage).
(3) Cádiz At Los Barrios, Cádiz another individual of Long-legged Buzzard, an adult, was seen on 26.11. It was a darker and more rufous individual than bird (1) (Juan Ramirez y Javi Elorriaga/ Fundación Migres).See two thumbnails here
Greater Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga (1,2)
(1) Castelló A bird assigned to this species by the observers was seen and photographed at Marjal de Almenara, Castelló, on 4.11 (Josep Bort). See three thumbnails here (J.Bort). Presumably same bird seen along the week at Albufera de Valencia: a 2nd/3rd cy individual assigned to this species was observed at Racó de l'Olla reserva, l'Albufera de Valencia on 18.11 (J. I. (1) Girona On 8.11 2 birds were seen altogether at Pals ricefields, Baix Ter, Girona (Albert Burgas i Àlex Ollé). (1) Lanzarote A bird was found at Uga village gardens, Yaiza, Lanzarote, Las Palmas on 2.11 (F.J. García Vargas).On 3.11 it remained at the same place and it was photographed (F.J.Garcia Vargas). (4) Asturies. On 10.11 another was seen at Cabu Peñes, Asturies (Nacho Castelao).
(5) Granada. On 15.11, a bird was found and photographed at "Charca de Suárez", Granada (Juan Pérez-Contreras, Beatriz Pérez Machado, Nils & Elena & Alejandro Börjesson y Manuel Mañani). (6) Gran Canaria A bird was found on 3.11 at the gardens of the junction where the GC-60 meets the GC-601, Artedara, Gran Canaria (Oskar Nilsson).
(7) Fuerteventura. A bird was found on 18.11 at Betancuria, Fuerteventura: first heard then seen feeding in a small park on the opposite of the Presidente Hormiga street where heard frequently calling (Bart-Jan Prak; Per Dahl).More in Spanish about these Canary islands records here.
(8) Sevilla. On 17.11 a bird was heard and sen at Rivera de Huesna, Sierra Norte de Sevilla, Sevilla (Rafa Romero).

(1) Barcelona. On 2.11 an Euring 3 was found at Besós river mouth (Quique Carballal)
(2) Gibraltar An unringed bird was seen near Jews Gate, Gibraltar on 27.11 (Ian Thompson/GONHS). It was seen just in the same place where another was ringed on 21.10.2008. 3rd record for the area (contributed by Charles Perez & Ernest F.J.García/GONHS)

(1) Asturies On 10.11 a bird was seen at sierra de Curiscao, concejo de Salas, Asturies, at 710 m high in company of two Linnets (César Álvarez Laó)
Lesser Redpoll Carduelis flammea (1,2,3,4-13,14-15,16,17-19)

(2) Asturies On 6.11 a female/1w of a cf. cabaret bird was seen at porreo de Muslera, ría de Villaviciosa, Asturies (Luis Carrera). Due to access restrictions a relocation of the bird could not be attempted on 7.11.
(3) Asturies On 8.11 one cabaret was found at rasa de Lluces, Colunga, Asturies in company of Goldfinches and a Siskin (Xuan Cortés). A thumbnail of the bird is here.
(4-13) Asturies. On 16.11 a group of at least 10 BIRDS was found at Bustio, Tinamayor, close to Unquera, within a large Siskin flock (Elías García-Sánchez). These figures have no precedent in Spain (ed. comment).
(14-15) Asturies. On 19.11 two cabaret were seen with a party of up to 40 Siskins C.spinus on birches near Penarronda, Castropol, Asturies (Pablo Fernández).
(16) Asturies. On 20.11 another different bird was seen also at Penarronda, Castropol, Asturies (Pablo Fernández) with 15 Siskins and 2 Goldfinches. See a thumbnail here. This bird was relocated on 22.11 at the same place (Clemente Álvarez Usategui). On 23.11 three altogether were seen, perhaps birds 14-16 (Manuel Quintana).
(17-19) Asturies. On 20.11, at Cabo Busto,Valdés,Astúrias and within a flock of over 150 C.carduelis, there were 3 Carduelis flammea cabaret, two 1w females and a male (see below) (Jesús Landeira)

Little Bunting Emberiza pusilla (1,2)
(1) Asturies An individual was trapped and ringed in an unknown Asturies site on 14.11 (Grupo de anillamiento Torquilla - GIA Asturias).
(2) Albacete. On 18.11 a bird was trapped and ringed at Canal de El Salobral, Albacete (Ángel José Lara and others). This would be the 4th trapped in the same area (one from 12.12.01 to 19.02.02; 18.01.02; 12.12.05 and this from 18.11.08. Some photos of these birds here.

2005 this webpage only includes records of birds needing homologation
by CR/SEO. For other local rarities contact local bird reports or records
committees. See here those rarities only for the
Canary Islands also dealt by CR/SEO. Changes in application to the rarity
list from January 2006. New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex,
Sterna bengalensis and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus
richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and are not be included
from 2006.
Recent
reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are
both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail
lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else
than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded
to the Spanish RC if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does
not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind. Gibraltar news are
included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society
but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this
area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors
of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with
a icon. We would welcome to receive
a spare copy of those journals using these news for commercial purposes.
