(1-5) Lugo The 5 Cygnus cygnus (2 ad. & 3 juv.) first seen at ría
de Foz, Lugo, on 9-10.11.2007 were still in the area on 6.1.2008 (Luis José Salaverri) and on 11.1 (J.Miguel Alonso Pumar) to 13.1 (Luis José Salaverri).Still around on 15.1 (L.J.Salaverri) and 27.1 (José Antonio Salazar, L.J.Salaverri).
Bewick's
Swan Cygnus columbianus bewickii (1-2)
(1-2) Tarragona The two swans at Mas de Bombita area, near Canal Vell lagoon, Deltebre, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona coming from late December 2007 were still in the area on 2-4.1 (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé), 5.1 (José Ardaiz; Albert Cama, Joan Ferré; Pablo Galiano) and 7.1 (Aimara Planillo, Asier Gómez, Cristian Jensen).On 12.1 the birds were seen again at Bombita area (Pablo Galiano, Xoan Ximenis; Isabel Bischoping, José Ruiz i Toni Alcocer) but on 13.1 the birds moved to Buda island (Clemente Álvarez, Pablo Fernandez, Toni Alcocer) where they remained on 14.1(Oriol Clarabuch).

Bean Goose Anser fabalis (1,2)
(1) Huelva A bird c.f. rossicus was found at Hinojos marsh, Hinojos,
Huelva on 8.1 (Javier Salcedo).It was with a Pink-footed (see below) and other geese, e.g. 23 Whitefronts!. On 10.1 it was again at the same place (Javier Salcedo, José Manuel Méndez)
(2) Palencia. One was at La Nava lagoon, Palencia, on 29.1 (Enrique Gómez Crespo)

Pink-footed
Goose Anser brachyrhynchus (1-2,3-5,6)
(1-2) Huelva A bird was found at Hinojos marsh, Hinojos,
Huelva on 8.1 (Javier Salcedo). On 10.1 there were 2 at the same place (Javier Salcedo, José Manuel Méndez). Two had been seen by José Antonio Sencianes at the same place on 6.1.
(3-5) Palencia. There were 3 or four birds at laguna de Boada de Campos, Palencia, on 19.1 (Carlos González Villalba, Antonio Herrero, Goyo Para).
(6) Palencia. One was at La Nava lagoon, Palencia, on 19.1 (Jesús Ruiz, Gregorio Garcia, Javier Martinez y Pedro Tapia). See a thumbnail here. Still present on 29.1 (Enrique Gómez Crespo)
Lesser Canada Goose Branta hutchinsii (1)
(1) Lanzarote.An unknown origin bird, without any plumage damage and flying well was seen and photographed at the plains near Montaña de Saga, Teguise, Lanzarote, Las Palmas on 7-8.1 (J. Sagardía Pradera), 9.1 (F. J. García Vargas, J. Sagardía Pradera, A. Unquiles Cobos) and 10-11.1 (J. Sagardía Pradera).Nothing seems to indicate a captive origin and if accepted as wild, it will be THE FIRST FOR SPAIN. See photos below (J.Sagardia) and thumbnails here. Pale-bellied Brent Goose Branta bernicla hrota (1,2)
(1) Lugo At the beach of Lago ,Xove, Lugo,close to the place where there is a Blue-winged Teal this month, it was recorded an individual on 12.1 (Pedro J.Menéndez, Pablo Fernández). (2) A Coruña From 15.1 (Antonio Gutiérrez) to 19.1 at least (Ricardo Hevia), a bird was present at Ría de Ortigueira, A Coruña.

Teal Anas carolinensis (1,2)
(1) Cantabria. On 14.1 a drake was seen again at Alday marshes, Cantabria (Yves Borremans). It had been seen at least until 30.11.2007.
(2) Asturies. The drake at El Cierrón, Villaviciosa, Asturies, was seen again on 14.1 (Antonio Ceballos). See a photo below and a thumbnail here. It remained in the area on 19.1 (Clemente Álvarez Usategui).

Black Duck Anas rubripes (1,2)
(1) Lugo The same returning bird (locally named Pepiño) ovewintering again this season, was seen at Ria de Foz, Lugo, Galicia on 6.1 (L.J.Salaverri) and on 11.1 (Luis José Salaverri; J.Miguel Alonso Pumar).Still around on 14.1 (L.J.Salaverri) and 21.1 (Rafa Armada,
Ferrán López, José L.Copete, J.M.Alonso Pumar) to 27.1 (José Antonio Salazar, L.J.Salaverri).
(2) Lugo Besides Pepiño (see above) there is an hybrid, a son of Pepiño,
at the same place this winter. Locally called
'Josito', it was seen again on 5.1 (L.J.Salaverri) and on 13.1 (Luis José Salaverri).Still around on 14.1 (L.J.Salaverri) and 27.1 (José Antonio Salazar, L.J.Salaverri).Josito was seen on 27.1 mating to a female Mallard (José Antonio Salazar).

(1) Lugo The drake first seen and photographed at Lago lagoon,Xove, Lugo, on 26-29.8,
was still there on 3.1.2008 (J.Miguel Alonso Pumar)
and on 11.1 (Luis José Salaverri) to 12.1 (Pedro J.Menéndez, Pablo Fernández).See two thumbnails here. Seen again on 21.1 (Rafa Armada,

(1) Valencia The 1w drake found on 12.12 at PN de l'Albufera, València was still at Racó de l'Olla reserve, PN l'Albufera de Valencia,

(1-2) León The pair (drake/female) seen at Selga de Ordás reservoir, León,
on 2.12.2007 was still there on 14.1.2008 (Ana C. Narciso y Antonio Ceballos).
Surf Scoter Melanitta perspicillata (1)
(1) Huelva A 1w drake was seen from Odiel marshes, Huelva, on 17.1 afternoon, together with 40 Mergus serrator (José Manuel Mendez). See a thumbnail here.

(1) Lugo The bird seen at Riocaldo lagoons, Begonte, Lugo on 23.8.2007 was still present in the area on 6.1 (Luis J.Salaverri) and on 12.1 (Luis J.Salaverri).
Presumed
Hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta (1,2,3)
(1) Tarragona On 8.1 the bird from Tancada lagoon, Ebro delta, Tarragona, was seen again but this time away from Tancada lagoon and near the Encanyissada, at Clot Nature Reserve (Iben Hove Sørensen, Toni Curcó, Pere Sorro) where it remained on 10.1 (Stephen Cristopher). On 13.1 it was seen again near La Tancada lagoon (Isabel Bischoping, José Ruiz i Toni Alcocer).
(2) Valencia One of the two birds present at Marjal de Alfafar, Albufera de València, València, was seen and photographed on 20.1(Isabel Bischoping i Toni Alcocer). See a photo below (T.Alcocer).This or another similar bird was seen again on 29.1 at marjal de Perelló, Albufera de València (Toni Alcocer)

(3) Cádiz The bird seen since November 2007 at Cadiz bay was seen again on 18.1 (Juan Ramírez, David Cuenca Espinosa) and 21.1 (Rafael García Costales)

(1) Badajoz. On 8.1 an adult bird was seen at close distance flying at Alqueva reservoir close to Ayuda bridge (Juan G. Navedo, Jorge Sánchez, Mamen Molina, Paco Capote /U.Extremadura-C.H.Guadiana)

(1) Tarragona On 10.1 one was found at Punta de la Banya reserve, Ebro Delta, Tarragona (Ferran Blanch). It was still there on 22.1 (Ricard Gutiérrez). See a photo below and two thumbnails here (Ricard Gutiérrez).

(1) Cádiz One immature was seen near Cazalla, Tarifa, on 29.1 (David Cuenca Espinosa).
Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus (1)
(1) Cádiz One was seen near La Hoya, Tarifa, on 15.1 (David Cuenca Espinosa).

(1-2) A Coruña The bird
found on 24.11 was relocated again on 6.1.2008 at Cecebre reservoir, A Coruña (Xabier Varela). There are directions (in Spanish, but with a map) on how to reach the areas where the bird is around in the Rarebirdspain blog.Visit the new photopage on this sighting. (1) Tarragona On 5.1, a bird was seen and photographed on ricefields near mas de la Comandanta, Deltebre, Delta de l'Ebre (José Ardaiz, Josep Tantull, Roser Solé). Gull Larus glaucoides (1,2,3,4,5)
(1)Lugo On 14.1 a 1w different from that seen last December 2007, was found at Lago beach, Xove, Lugo (J.M.Alonso Pumar,L.J.Salaverri).Still around on 15.1 (L.J.Salaverri). See a photo below (J.M.Alonso Pumar) and a thumbnail here.
Seen again on 21.1 in company of another individual (see below, Rafa Armada,
Ferrán López, José L.Copete, J.M.Alonso Pumar).This bird (the bicouloured bill Iceland) was seen again on 27.1 (José Antonio Salazar, L.J.Salaverri) and it is perhaps the same bird seen on 14.1 there but afterwards at Burela, Lugo on 24.1 that you can see in Pablo's blog here (Antonio Gutiérrez, Pablo Gutiérrez).

(2) Asturies. On 16.1 a corpse was found at the Luanco seashore, Asturies (Manuel Fernández Pajuelo). See a thumbnail here.

(1) Pontevedra A 1w was seen at O Vao marsh, O Grove/Ogrobe, Galicia on 1.1.2008 (Albert Cama, Matxalen Pauly, Abel Martín, Isabel Sancho, Cosme Damián Romai)
(2)Pontevedra. A bird was found on 20.1 at Vigo harbour (Josè Ramòn Gòmez,Ana Isabel Pèrez,Josè A. Gàndara)
Little Swift Apus affinis (1)
(1) Cádiz On 21.1 a bird was seen at usual haunts of Sierra de la Plata, Cádiz (David Cuenca Espinosa), an unusual early (or late) record.
Horned Lark Eremophila alpestris (1)
(1) Girona On 3.1.2008 a bird was seen at close range at Tregurà de Dalt, Vilallonga de Ter, Girona (Jorge Ramón López Olvera). A full description has been sent to the CR/SEO-BirdLife for its assessment. Fourth for Spain if accepted.

Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus (1)
(1) Bizkaia. On 9.1 one individual was found at Lamiako, Leioa, Bizkaia (Javier Elorriaga).On 10.1 it was seen again close to the Portugalete hanging bridge (Iván Sarabia, Imanol Gomez, Karmelo De Dios, Serafín Alarcón, Javier Elorriaga, José Luis Pacheco) and on 12.1 it was seen again and photographed at close range (Juan Carlos Andrés; Javier Portillo). Still around on 13.1 when seen by many observers (José Ardaiz). See photos below and thumbnails here. The bird was featured in the local press. See the story (in Spanish and Basque, with English abstract) in the Rarebirdspain blog here.The bird was seen again on 17.1 (Ricardo Rodríguez, that has published more photos in his blog) and on 19.1 (Sergio de Juan, Begoña Valcárcel) when it was trapped and ringed within the regular ringing program that it is being carried out in the area this year. Still around on 20.1 (Joserra Martínez Alonso).Relocated after some days at the same place on 24.1 (Alfonso Rodrigo et al)

From March
2005 this webpage only includes records of birds needing homologation
by CR/SEO. For other local rarities contact local bird reports or records
committees. See here those rarities only for the
Canary Islands also dealt by CR/SEO. Changes in application to the rarity
list from January 2006. New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex,
Sterna bengalensis and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus
richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and are not be included
from 2006.
Recent
reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are
both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail
lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else
than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded
to the Spanish RC if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does
not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind. Gibraltar news are
included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society
but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this
area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors
of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with
a icon. We would welcome to receive
a spare copy of those journals using these news for commercial purposes.

needing homologation by the Spanish Rarities Committee are included. Reproduction
