From March 2005 this webpage only includes records of birds needing homologation by CR/SEO. For other local rarities contact local bird reports or records committees. See here rarities only for the Canary Islands also dealt by CR/SEO. Changes in application to the rarity list from January 2006. New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and will not be included in 2006.

(1)On 3.3 a bird was seen at ría de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies (Juan Zaldivar Trabanco). 
(2-3)Two more joined the first on 6.3 also at ría de la Villa (Adolfo Villaverde)
(4-5)Two birds were found 0,5 km north of the Tordera river mouth, Blanes, Girona, on 15.3 (Daniel Roca). See a thumbnail here


Mandarin Duck* Aix galericulata (1)
(1) There was a drake not coming from the nearby park at Piles river, Xixón, Asturies, on 1.3 (Cristina C.Guerra, Alfonso Rodrigo). See a thumbnail here


Green-Winged Teal* Anas carolinensis (1)
(1)The drake found on 24.2 at Sabón reservoir, Arteixo, A Coruña remained there on 1.3 (X.Varela). See a thumbnail here and 23.3 (Alfredo Álvarez, X.Varela). Still there on 29.3 (X.Varela)


Ring-necked Duck* Aythya collaris (1,2-6,7)
(1) The female seen at Valle Molina reservoir, Tenerife, Canary Islands, on 10.2 was still there on 10.3 (Juan Antonio Lorenzo) and 30.3 (Micha A.Neumann)
(2-6) The five birds present at least since 4.2 at Embalse de As Forcadas, Valdoviño, A Coruña (four males and a female) remained at the same area on 10.3 (Ricardo Hevia)
(7) The female overwintering at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona, was seen again on 12.3 (Jordi Martí-Aledo)

(1)On 10.3 a drake was found at Embalse de As Forcadas, Valdoviño, A Coruña (Ricardo Hevia) and was still there on 17.3 (Rafael Armada)

Goosander* Mergus merganser (1)
(1) The bird seen from February at least at Veguilla lagoon, Alcazar de San Juan lagoon, Ciudad Real was seen again on 5.3 (Ángela Molina, Alfonso López)Still in the are, but quite unconfiding, on 12.3 (Manuel Chapa) and 18.3 (Gabriel Martín, Joan Ximenis, Mario Rodero, Carlos Sánchez).

(1) On 18.3, two birds were seen in the vicinity of Playa Papagayo, Lanzarote, Canary Islands (Simon Roper).

White Pelican* Pelecanus onocrotalus (1)
(1)A bird was found at Corredor verde del Guadiamar, Sevilla, on 12.3 (Paco Chiclana, Félix López). There is a thumbnail here

Presumed Hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret* Egretta gularis x garzetta (1)
(1) A bird showing intermediate characters (e.g. powerful bill, grey colour...) was seen at Estanys de Sils, Sils, Girona on 15.3 (Daniel Roca). See a photo below (D.Roca). Communicated by Jordi Ventura and Jordi Martí-Aledo. Still there on 18.3 (Cristina Prieto) and 20.3 (Daniel Roca)

Sacred Ibis* Threskiornis aethiopicus(1-5)
(1-5) Two birds were seen at Arrecife, Lanzarote, Canary Islands at least from 12-17.3 (F.Javier García Vargas).See three thumbnails here (F.J.García). Still there on 27.3 (now totalling four birds) and 31.3 (now five birds) (Juan Sagardia Pradera)


Pallid Harrier* Circus macrourus (1,2)
(1) The 1w seen from 5-7.12.2005 at Xilxes marshes, Castelló, Comunitat Valenciana was relocated on 3.3 (Josep Bort). See photos in his website (opens in another window)
(2) At Gibraltar, a bird was seen on passage on 22.3 (Paul Rocca/GONHS). This is the 2nd ever record for the rock, the 1st being on 23.3.1992 (communicated by Ernest FJ Garcia)


Sociable Plover* Vanellus gregarius (1)
(1)A bird in breeding plumage was seen at El Rocío, PN Doñana, Huelva on 6.3 (José Luis Arroyo; Dave Pitman). The bird had been present in the area at least since 24.2.2006 (seen by Scandinavian birders).


Long-billed Dowitcher* Limnodromus scolopaceus(1)
(1)The 3rd for Catalonia, and 1st for Girona, was a bird, a 1w, found at El Matà, Parc Natural Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona, on 12.3 (Jordi Martí-Aledo  ; Mireia Jiménez,Alex Ollé, Pere Serrano). (1) The bird seen on 4.2 at Chiclana de la Frontera beach, Cádiz , was still there on 23.3(Paco Chiclana, Mario Martín)


Spotted Sandpiper* Actitis macularius (1,2,3)
(1) The bird found on 12.1 a bird at Salinas de Janubio beach, Yaiza, Lanzarote was still there on 5.3 to 18.3 (F.Javier García Vargas)
(2)On 6-7.3 there was a bird at ría de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies (Adolfo Villaverde)
(3)The bird present since 3.10.2005 at Ría de Ortigueira, Galicia, was still in the area on 14.3. Laughing Gull* Larus atricilla (1,2,3,4,5)
(1)The adult found on 27.2 an adult was seen at Getaria beach, Gipuzkoa was still there on 1.3 (Oliver Perez Amas). See two thumbnails here. Also present on 2.3 (Iván Sarabia) and 5.3 (Karmelo de Dios) to 6.3 (J.Hidalgo)
(2) A 1w from Santurtzi harbour seen during february was relocated on 2.3 (F.Valle, E.Llamas, G.Ocio).Probably the same was seen at ria de Nervión, within Bilbao city, on 9.3 (Cristina Negueruela, José Luís Pacheco). (1) The 1w bird present at El Abra, Santurtzi, Bilbao since 20.1 was still there on 1.3 (Gorka Ocio, Cristina G.Guerra, Alfonso Rodrigo; Grégory Lepoutre) and 2.3 (F.Valle, Eugenia Llamas, G.Ocio) and 3.3 (M.B.Lancaster) to 7.3 (G.Ocio, I.García, F.Arce, C.A.Usategui) and 10.3 (G.Ocio, O.Llama, A.Rodríguez, J.Díaz) and 11-12.3 (G.Ocio, J.L.Copete, F.López, J.Ferré, X.Macià).Last seen on 19.3 (Gorka Ocio)


Glaucous Gull* Larus hyperboreus (1,2,3)
(1)After the 2w bird reported on 27.2, another Glaucous, this time a 1w was seen on 10.3 at the Ría de Avilés, Asturies (Jorge Valella, César A.Laó) and again on 17.3 (José Guerra, Adolfo Villaverde, Daniel López Velasco). See a thumbnail here (D.L.Velasco).
(2) At Caión, A Laracha, A Coruña, a 1w was found on 18.3 (Antonio Sandoval).
(3) A 2nd winter was found at El Musel, Xixón, on 27.3 (Nacho Vega)


Iceland Gull* Larus glaucoides (1,2,3,4,5,6,7)
(1) A 1st winter was seen at El Abra, Santurtzi, Bilbao, Bizkaia on 3.2 (M.B.Lancaster) and 11.3 (G.Ocio, J.L.Copete, F.López, J.Ferré, X.Macià).Still there on 19.3 (G.Ocio; R.Armada) and 24.3 (Delfín González)
(2) A 1w was seen again on 6.3 at Burela harbour, Vigo, Galicia (José Miguel Alonso Pumar)
(3) There was a 1w at ria de la Villa beach, Villaviciosa, Asturies on 7.3 (T.Zaldivar, A.Villaverde)

(1) The bird found on 28.2 at Parque Isabel La Católica, Xixón, Asturies remained there on 1.3 (Clemente Álvarez Usategui, Pablo Fernández, Cristina G.Guerra, Alfonso Rodrigo).See a photo below (D.L.Velasco) and thumbnails here. The bird was still there on 12.3 (Clemente A.Usategui; D.L.Velasco, A.Villaverde, G.Ocio, J.L.Copete, F.López, J.Ferré, X.Macià).The bird was still at the same park on 14.3 (Ignacio Menéndez Vega, Santiago sp.) and 17.3 (Ángel Nuño) and 18.3 (R.Armada). American Herring Gull* Larus smithsonianus (1) SECOND FOR SPAIN
(1) The 1w bird found on 28.1 at playa de la Bola, Getxo, Bizkaia, was still at Santurtzi harbour on 1.3 (Gorka Ocio, Cristina G.Guerra, Alfonso Rodrigo; Grégory Lepoutre) and 2.3 (F.Valle, E.Llamas, G.Ocio). See two thumbnails here

Caspian Gull* Larus cachinnans (1,2,3-4,5,6-8,9,10,11,12,13)
Unprecedented set of records.
(1) The 1w Caspian found on 10-29.1 at Pinto rubbish tip, Madrid was seen gain and photographed on 4.3 (Javier Marchamalo, Juan M. Ruiz, Gabriel Martín)

(2) On 7.3 a 1w was seen at ca l'Arana beach, El Prat de Llobregat, Delta del Llobregat, Barcelona (Ferran López). It was ringed with a metallic band.
(3-4) On 4.3 there were 2 1w birds at Tarragona harbour (Albert Cama). See two photos below (Albert Cama)

(5) A green PVC-ringed bird was seen at playa de Alba, Arteixo, A Coruña, on 10.3 (Xabier Varela). See two thumbnails here (X.Varela).This bird had been ringed on 27.5.2005 at Jankowice, near Zator, Oswiecim County, Poland (50,02N 19,28E) within a 100 pairs colony of Larus cachinnans
(6-8) On 12.3 three were seen at Santurtzi area, Bizkaia, Euskadi (Joan Ferré, J.L.Copete, G.Ocio, F.López,X.Macià; G.Artiguez, A.Cama). One of them, the 1st, was still tehre on 19.3 (G.Ocio).
(9) On 4.3 another new 1w bird, different from (1) was seen at Pinto rubbish tip, Madrid (Javier Marchamalo). See two thumbnails here
(10)On 12.3 a 1w was seen and photographed at Palamós harbour, Girona (Pep Arcos, Montse Roura). See two photos below (Pep Arcos)

On 18.3 another 1w was seen at Solius dump, Solius, Girona (Carlos Álvarez Cros). See a photo in the vall de Ridaura website.After careful examination it was concluded that it was the same individual than the Palamós bird
(11) At Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona, one 1w was found amongst the local Yellow-leggeds and Lesser Black-backeds on 20.3 (Vittorio Pedrocchi, Carles Carboneras). The bird was seen again on 22.3 (V.Pedrocchi, C.Carboneras) and 23.3 (V.Pedrocchi, C.Carboneras,R.Gutiérrez) to 24.3 (V.Pedrocchi, J.Ferré, L.Hernández, C.Carboneras, E.Pons, J.Pedrocchi). (12) At Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona,another 1w, in company of bird (11) was seen (only) on 22.3 (Vittorio Pedrocchi, Carles Carboneras). See a photo below. It was not so abraded as bird (11).It was seen again on 24.3(V.Pedrocchi, C.Carboneras,R.Gutiérrez) to 24.3 (V.Pedrocchi, J.Ferré, L.Hernández, C.Carboneras, E.Pons, J.Pedrocchi)

(13) At Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona, on 24.3 a THIRD 1w was found in company of the previous two (birds 12 and 11). This 3rd individual was intermediate in wear compared with the other two (V.Pedrocchi, J.Ferré, L.Hernández, C.Carboneras, E.Pons, J.Pedrocchi). See a photo below (C.Carboneras)

Hybrid Lesser-Crested x Sandwich Tern or Cayenne Tern* Sterna bengalensis x sandvicensis or S.sanvicensis eurygnatha(1)
(1) The bird first seen on 31.1 was seen again on 2.3 at Arrecife area, Lanzarote, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Francisco Javier García Vargas).On 15-17.3 it was seen again in better conditions noting a whitish rump, concolorous with tail and contrasting with mantle. These features eliminate pure bengalensis. A full description is being written to discard the possibility of Cayenne Tern, a major rarity would be (F.J.García Vargas).Still there on 29-21.3 (F.J.García Vargas, Juan Sagardía Pradera)

Roseate Tern* Sterna dougallii(1-2)
(1-2) A bird was seen on 13.3 at Arrecife area, Lanzarote, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Francisco Javier García Vargas). Still there on 29.3, when a second bird joined the first (F.Javier García Vargas)


Little Swift * Apus affinis (1,2-3)
(1) On 2.3 a bird was seen at Guadalquivir river mouth, Chipiona, Cádiz (Paco Chiclana)
(2-3) A pair was noted on 24.3 from Tarifa island, Cádiz (Maria Mateos, Sandra Villar, Andrés de la Cruz, Gonzalo M.Arroyo, David Cuenca Espinosa)


Black-headed Wagtail Motacilla flava feldegg (1)
(1) A male feldegg was seen at Llobregat river near Cornellà de Llobregat, Barcelona, on 30.3 (Sergi Sales). It was seen again on 31.3 afternoon (Andrés Burguera) at the Llobregat river at Sant Boi de Llobregat.


Yellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus (1)
(1) A bird was seen on 23.3 near Gijón, Asturies (Elias G.Sánchez)


Rosy Starling* Sturnus roseus (1)
(1) A 1w bird was found on 4.2 at Viladecans rubbish dump, Llobregat Delta, Barcelona was still there on 4.3 (Carles Grande). Still there on 10.3 (Vittorio Pedrocchi, Lluís Hernández).Still there on 10.3 afternoon (V.Pedrocchi, L.Hernàndez). See a thumbnail here. The bird was still there on 19.3 (Rafael Armada) when it was in an advanced moult stage (see a photo below)

(1) On 12.3 there was a bird at Peñablanca, Castrillón, Asturies (Elias García-Sánchez)
(2)A 1w male was seen at Cabo Negro, Asturies on 17.3 (Elias García-Sánchez)


Pine Bunting* Emberiza leucocephalos (1) FOURTH FOR SPAIN
(1)The male found on 15.1 at Cases del Señor, Monovar, Alacant was still there on 10.3 (L.Sogorb).Still there on 16.3 (Rafael Armada)

Red-crested Pochard* Netta rufina(1)
(1) A bird was seen at Playa Honda pond, San Bartolomé, Lanzarote on 2.3 (Juan Alexis Rivera). If accepted it will be the 2nd for the Canary Islands.


Mediterranean Gull* Larus melanocephalus (1)
(1 A bird remained at Arrecife, Lanzarote on 2.3 (F.Javier García Vargas).Still there on 15.3 (F.Javier García Vargas)


Hawfinch* Coccothraustes coccothraustes (1)
(1) A bird was seen on 1.3 at Campo de golf de Teguise, Lanzarote (Juan Sagardía, F.Javier García Vargas)
