Mute Swan Cygnus olor. On 16.11 a bird was seen flying SW ovfer faro de Calaburras, Mijas, Málaga (Todor Iliev Todorov). Perhaps the same bird? was seen on 17.11 at playa de los Lances, Tarifa, Cádiz. It stayer for a while and later continued flying S (Keith Bensusan/GONHS).There was one at camino de Villafranca lagoon, Ciudad Real on 21.11 (Alfonso López)
 

Whooper Swan* Cygnus cygnus(1,2) On 27.11 one (possibly two) were seen at ría de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies (José Antonio García Fernández)On 20.11 there were  3 birds (2 ads and one juvenile at ría de Foz, Lugo (David Calleja Marcos, Javier Usera). See a photo below.

White-fronted Goose* Anser albifrons . On 4.11 there were two at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca (Enrique Larreta, Javier Valls, J.M. Palacios, Miguel Rouco)There was one at Corredor Verde del Guadiamar, Sevilla on 6.11 (Paco Chiclana)On 11.11 there were 8 at La Zaida lagoon, Gallocanta, Zaragoza (Paco Chiclana, Manolo Villaécija, Manolo Romero). On 8-9.11 there was one at Isla Mayor ricefields, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana). There were 2 at Villafáfila, Zamora on 8.11 within a flock of Greylags which included 2 leucistic birds (Alfonso Rodrigo) On 16.11 there was a bird at La Nava lagoon, Palencia, very possibly a 1st winter (David González Ortega).The two from Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca, were still there on 16.11 (Miguel Rouco). There were 2 amongst 25-30000 greylags at Isla Mayor-Corredor verde del Guadiamar, Sevilla on 12.11 (Daniel L Huertas).From 29-30-11 there was one juvenile at la Nava, Palencia (Enrique Gómez Crespo).

 

Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis On 9.11 seven birds were seen at Isla Mayor ricefields, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana).There were 3 amongst 25-30000 greylag geese at Isla Mayor-Corredor verde del Guadiamar, Sevilla on 12.11 (Daniel L Huertas).

Brent Goose Branta bernicla.Two on 8.11 and one on 12.11 were counted at Santoña NR, Cantabria (A.G.Herrera, J.Aja, V.Iturriaga, B.Gomez, J.G.Navedo) .Still one, a 1st winter of ssp bernicla, at Montehano area on 21.11 (María Santillán, José Pedro Portillo, Javier Portillo; A.García Herrera)A 1st winter of the nominate ssp was seen amongst hundreds of ducks at O Bao marshes, O Grove (Ogrobe), Galicia (Galiza) from 17.11 and at least until 20.11 (X.Pinheiro, E.Martínez-Sabarís,Cosme Damián Romai Cousido et al) On 26.11 there were two at Santoña (JG Navedo-SEO/BirdLife) and three at Cicero area, RN Santoña y Noja, Cantabria on 28.11 (M.Santillán, P.Ibarrondo, A.Sanz, A.Lamsfus, J.J.Aja, J.Portillo). There were 2 at ria de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies on 24.11 (Adolfo Villaverde) One was seen at Rianxo harbour, A Coruña, on 21.11 (Xurxo Pinheiro, Samuel Paz).

Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea. On 21.11 there were two at laguna del Camino de Villafranca, Ciudad Real (Alfonso López).Record count for Fuerteventura and Spain: On 28.11 there were 55 BIRDS at Los Molinos reservoir, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands coinciding with a locust invasion to the island. In contrast, there were only 22 common coots at the reservoir .(César-Javier Palacios). 

Shelduck Tadorna tadorna. Rarity for the Canary Islands. The 4th for the Canary Islands was seen at Maspalomas, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria, on 13.11 (Miguel Avelino Suares). See a thumbnail here,.Still there at least until 20.11 (Miguel Avelino).
 

Mandarin Duck* Aix galericulata (1,2.3)On 9.11 there were two drakes at Banyoles lake, Girona. One had been seen in october (Carles Feo Quer).Still there on 20.11 (Carles González) and 30.11 (Carles Feo Quer)(2) two, a pair, in full breeding plumage were recorded at Racó de l'Olla, l'Albufera de València on 18.11 (J.I.Dies). Although there are a few free-flying individuals in the c.20 km distant city of Valencia, there are no records of the species in the area since 15 November 1942 (!). Both birds behaved wild and joined a small flock of Pochard (A.ferina) (J.I.Dies). American Wigeon* Anas americana(1) The drake found on  26.9 at Ría del Eo, Lugo/Asturies was still there on 2.11, with several duck including 2 Ring-neckeds (Pablo Fernández García).See a thumbnail here (photographed on 26.10, César A.Laó) On 9.11 it was still there (Pablo Fernández García y David Calleja Marcos).

Green-winged Teal* Anas carolinensis(1) On 2.11 a drake appeared at El Cortalet lagoon, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona. It is believed to be the same individual returning for its third consecutive winter -it appeared last year on 31.10.2003 ( Luís José Salaverri, Rosa Llinàs, Xavi del Acebo, Jordi Martí-Aledo)See two thumbnails here (L.J.Salaverri)Not seen on 9.11 (J.Martí-Aledo, P.Feliu, B.Minobis, F.López, R.Gutiérrez et al) but relocated on 12.11 (Jordi Martí-Aledo).

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca  A drake was seen at desembocadura del Guadalhorce,Málaga on 9.11 (Antonio Tamayo). Another was at La Furta, Corvera, Asturies on 9.11 (Clemente Álvarez Usátegui).See a thumbnail here. A possible hybrid Ferrugineous duck x pochard A.nyroca x ferina was reported from Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València on 20.11 (Ignacio Nebot-Gil). On 28.11 there was one at desembocadura del río Guadiaro, San Roque, Cádiz (Gonzalo Gil, F.Enrique Navarrete)

Scaup Aythya marila.  On 6.11 there was an adult male at Ría del Eo, Lugo/Asturies (Pablo Fernández García ).There was a drake at marisma del Joyel aon 15.11 and a female at Ano canal,both at Santoña NR, Cantabria on 21.11 (Alejandro García Herrera).The latter, a 1st winter, was still at Santoña on 25.11 (JJ Fernández-Aransay).There were 2 ad females off Rianxo harbour, A Coruña on 21.11 (Xurxo Pinheiro).

Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis. A 1st winter was seen at Zeluan on 12.11 (César A.Laó).Still there on 16.11 (Pedro J Menéndez)Still there on 21.11 (Daniel López Velasco) and on 27.11 (M.A.Fernández, D.L.Velasco)
 

NEOAVES

Red-necked Grebe* Podiceps grisegena. A bird was seen from la Arenilla hide, RN Santoña, Cantabria on 10.11 (Álvaro Bustamante) A corpse of a dead bird, moulting into winter plumage, was found on 20.11 at the beach of Almenara, Plana Baixa, Castelló. This is the 3rd record for the whole Valencia region (País Valencià) (David Olmos Corral). See a thumbnail here
 

Great Shearwater  Puffinus gravis. On 20.11, 413 birds were counted flying W from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia in a 3 hour count (Antonio Sandoval). A good score!.

Balearic Shearwater  Puffinus mauretanicus.18 were counted off Estaca de Bares, Galicia on 1.11 (Antonio Gutiérrez, Pablo Pita, Pablo Gutiérrez e Ignacio Allegue). By 3.11 there were c.30 birds at Roses bay, Girona (Jordi Martí-Aledo).On 1.11.04  there were over 200 birds in different rafts off playa de Lanzada, Sanxenxo/ O Grove, Pontevedra (César Vidal, Rafael y Tito Salvadores)On 7.11,  496Puffinus mauretanicus were counted in an hour while flying N off cabo silleiro, Baiona, Pontevedra (César Vidal). Extremely interesting sightings from the Straits of Gibraltar: on 5.11 (08:40-12:45), 521 mauretanicus were seen coming from NE and entering the Straits. With them, a minimum of 6 Levantine S (Puffinus yelkouan).This is one of the few confirmed sightings in the Straits in the last year and talks of birds entering the Mediterranean coming from the Atlantic. On 6.11,  from 11:00-13:00, 785 Balearics were counted while 26 Levantine S were noted going W like the year before (Ernest FJ Garcia)On 12.11 during an hour of continous observation from Cabo Silleiro, Baiona, Pontevedra, 463 birds were counted heading north (!) and only one south (César Vidal). The area is holding a large concentration of small fish 'Lanzón' Ammodites tobianus and a small crab 'Patexo' Polybius henslowi. The shearwaters are preying on these species in what is considered an exceptional year for both fish and crab in the area by local fishermen (César Vidal). On 6-7.11 six birds were seen entering Algeciras harbour, Cádiz (Salvador Garcia). By 5.8.11 from 120-140 birds were counted off Complejo Intermareal de Umia-O Grove, Pontevedra. This coast had held up to 2040 birds in 15.10 (Xurxo Pinheiro). On 9.11 there were only 8 off Guadalhorce river mouth, Málaga (Antonio Tamayo).On 22.11 there was a compact party of 957-1120 birds less than 1 nautic mile off Remolar lagoon, Llobregat delta, Barcelona (N.Urios; F.X.Santaeufemia, A.Ramal, R.Gutiérrez), where 0 birds were seen during the census of 19.11 (FX Santaeufemia). The numbers of the count differ according to eye count (957) or digital photo counting (1120). See a photo of part of the group  below (A.Ramal). On 19.11 at Penyal d'Ifac, Calp, Alacant there was also 1 Mediterreanean (Levantine) Shearwater (P.yelkouan)with the 140 mauretanicus recorded (A.Jacobo, J.Santamaria). On 21.11 there were 35 at cap d'Horta, Alacant (Elías Gomis)

Great White Egret Egretta alba. Observations outside of regular site at PN Deltade l'Ebre, Tarragona. On 10.11 one was seen at La Rogera, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (J.Martí-Aledo, P.Feliu, B.Minobis, F.López, R.Gutiérrez et al).There was one at Corredor Verde del Guadiamar, Sevilla on 6.11 (Paco Chiclana).There was one at PN de les Salines de Santa Pola on 7.11 (A. Jacobo Ramos, see information at Natur@licante)There were 2 at desembocadura del Guadalhorce, Málaga on 11.11 (Antonio Tamayo, JM.Ramirez). At the same river but at Pizarra, Málaga there were 9 the same day (J.M.Ramírez). One was seen at Marjal de Pego,València on 9.11 (Jules Sykes). There was one at Villafáfila on 8.11 (Alfonso Rodrigo)Four were at Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta on 15.11 (FX Santaeufemia, RGutiérrez, F.López). There were 2 at Ter river, near Malars ditch, Osona, Barcelona on 18.11 (Pere Baucells). A bird was at San Vicente de la Barquera, Cantabria, on 17.11 (Alejandro G Herrera). One was at El Cortalet lagoon, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà on 17.11 (Javi Mendoza, J.Martin, M.Poch, L.Pola, A.Garcia).On 17.11 there was one at Dehesa de Abajo, Puebla del Rio, Sevilla (John Butler).There were 2 at Torberes d'Almardà de Sagunt, València from 11-18.11 (Marlene Veen/Acció Ecologista Agró).There was one at estanys des Codolar i Sal Rossa, PN ses Salines d'Eivissa, on 18-19.11 (Oliver Martínez).There were 2 at brazo de la Torre, Sevilla on 18.11 and four at Corredor verde del Guadiamar, Sevilla on 20.11 (Paco Chiclana, Mario Martín, Ricardo Martín, Manolo Romero).Eight birds were counted at Cibollar area, PN S'Albufera de Mallorca on 28.11 (Pere Vicens). Two were on 27.11 at Tauste ricefields, Zaragoza (Fran Alcalá, Sara Bujeda). On 26.11 there were 2 at corredor verde del Guadiamar,Sevilla (Rafa Romero). At San Vicente de la Barquera, Oyambre, Cantabria there was a bird on 24.11 (Fco. Javier Portillo). On 24.11 there was one at Estanys des Codolar, Eivissa, Balearic Islands (Oliver Martinez). There were 3 at Arrocampo, Cáceres on 27-28.11 (Javier Briz)

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. On 1.11 there were over 800 Glossy Ibis at the Isla Mayor rice fields, Pueblo del Rio, Sevilla (John Butler).There were 270  at Corredor Verde del Guadiamar, Sevilla on 6.11 (Paco Chiclana)From 6-13.11 there were six birds at Marjal d'Almenara, La Llosa, Plana Baixa, Castelló (Miguel Martínez Constant). There were 3 at la Janda, Cádiz on 20.11 (Javier de la Cruz).There was one at Guadalhorce river mouth from 20.11 (A.Tamayo et al) to 28.11 (Joan Ximenis). On 23.11 there had been one at laguna de los Prados, Málaga (A.Tamayo)
 

Short-toed Eagle Circaetus gallicus. Rarity in the Canary Islands. A bird was seen at La Pardilla, Telde, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on 14.11 (Miguel Avelino Suarez).
 

Lesser Spotted Eagle* Aquila pomarina(1) From 3.11, a bird, presumably the same recorded last winter, was seen again at the same Doñana National Park area, at marisma del Rocío, Almonte, Huelva (José Luis Arroyo). Probably the same bird was referred as clanga at the same site on 11.11 (Iván Rodríguez).See a photo below (JL Arroyo) and thumbnails here.Probably this individual was seen on 26.11 at the same area (Rafa Romero) Editorial note: Please note the need for caution regarding hybridisation with clanga in this species. Reading of Vali & Lohmus (2004) Nestling characteristics and identification of the lesser spotted eagle Aquila pomarina, greater spotted eagle A. clanga, and their hybrids (J Ornithol (2004) 145: 256–263) is strongly reccomended.

Corncrake Crex crex. On 19.11 a bird was fushed at Valle de las Cruces, Garafía, La Palma island, Canary Islands (Juan Antonio Lorenzo).
 

American Purple Gallinule* Porphyrio martinica (1) FIRST FOR SPAIN. The 1st-calendar year bird (Euring 3) found exhausted at Puerto Rico village, Mogán, Gran Canaria island, Canary Islands on 19.10 was still at the recovery center of Tafira of the local government (Cabildo Insular), at Gran Canaria on 1.11.Released into the wild on 2.11 (communicated by J.A.Lorenzo)See a photo of the moment of the release below

Crested Coot Fulica cristata .On 3.11 at a small lagoon near Roquetas de Mar saltpans, Almería, there were two collared birds numbered 084 & 086 (Richard Gunn)

Dotterel Charadrius morinellus.On 9.11 there were 5 together with 4 Black-bellied Sandgrouse Pterocles orientalis at Las Amoladeras, Cabo de Gata, Almería (Raimundo Martín Rodríguez)

Temminck's Stint Calidris temminckii. On 1.11 there were 11 Temminck's Stints at the Isla Mayor rice fields, Puebla del Rio, Sevilla (John Butler)

Purple Sandpiper Calidris maritima. Only Mediterranean records. A bird was found at Fuengirola harbour, Málaga, on 11.11 (Juan Ramírez, Salvador Solís. A.Tamayo et al)

Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus.On 30.10 there were still two at Salinas del Cerrillo, RN Punta Entinas-Sabinar, Almería (Raiundo Martín, Antonio Tamayo) . Last seen on 19.11 (Antonio Tamayo et al)
 

Rustic Bunting * Emberiza rustica(1) THIRD FOR SPAIN.  On 6.11 one was ringed at Palmones, final del embudo, Algeciras-Estrecho de Gibraltar. (Pablo Ortega, Manuel Lobón, Antonio Cavas, Fernando E. Navarrete, Miguel González). See a photo below and two thumbnails here (M.González)

Snow Bunting Plectrophenax nivalis. On 8.11 there was an adult male at Salinas beach, Asturies (Daniel L.Velasco). On 13-14.11 there were 3 birds: 2 1w males and a 1w female all at Cabo Peñes (Daniel L.Velasco, C.Álvarez Usátegui, Pedro J.Menéndez, César A.Laó, José Antonio GF, Atocha Ramos).Still there on 21.11 (Daniel L.Velasco).See a photo below.From 19-21.11 there was a female at Alcossebre, Castelló (Des Norden).
