Swan Cygnus olor. On 16.11 a bird was seen flying SW ovfer faro
de Calaburras, Mijas, Málaga (Todor Iliev Todorov). Perhaps the
same bird? was seen on 17.11 at playa de los Lances, Tarifa, Cádiz.
It stayer for a while and later continued flying S (Keith Bensusan/GONHS).There
was one at camino de Villafranca lagoon, Ciudad Real on 21.11 (Alfonso

Zamora on 8.11 within a flock of Greylags which included 2 leucistic birds

very possibly a 1st winter (David González Ortega).The two from
Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca, were still there on 16.11 (Miguel Rouco).

at Santoña NR, Cantabria (A.G.Herrera, J.Aja, V.Iturriaga, B.Gomez,
J.G.Navedo) .Still one, a 1st winter of ssp bernicla, at Montehano
area on 21.11 (María Santillán, José Pedro Portillo,
Javier Portillo; A.García Herrera)A 1st winter of the nominate ssp
was seen amongst hundreds of ducks at O Bao marshes, O Grove (Ogrobe),
Galicia (Galiza) from 17.11 and at least until 20.11 (X.Pinheiro, E.Martínez-Sabarís,Cosme
Damián Romai Cousido et al) On 26.11 there were two at Santoña
(JG Navedo-SEO/BirdLife) and three at Cicero area, RN Santoña y
Noja, Cantabria on 28.11 (M.Santillán, P.Ibarrondo, A.Sanz, A.Lamsfus,
J.J.Aja, J.Portillo). There were 2 at ria de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies
on 24.11 (Adolfo Villaverde) One was seen at Rianxo harbour, A Coruña,

Tadorna ferruginea. On 21.11 there were two at laguna
del Camino de Villafranca, Ciudad Real (Alfonso López).Record
count for Fuerteventura and Spain: On 28.11 there were 55 BIRDS
at
Los Molinos reservoir, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands coinciding with a
locust invasion to the island. In contrast, there were only 22 common coots
at the reservoir .(César-Javier Palacios).

The
4th for the Canary Islands was seen at Maspalomas, San Bartolomé
de Tirajana, Gran Canaria, on 13.11 (Miguel Avelino Suares). See

9.11 there were two drakes at Banyoles lake, Girona. One had been seen
in october (Carles Feo Quer).Still there on 20.11 (Carles González)
and 30.11 (Carles Feo Quer)(2) two, a pair, in full breeding plumage were
recorded at Racó de l'Olla, l'Albufera de València on 18.11
(J.I.Dies). Although there are a few free-flying individuals in the c.20
km distant city of Valencia, there are no records of the species in the
area since 15 November 1942 (!). Both birds behaved wild and joined a small
flock of Pochard (A.ferina)

Podiceps grisegena. A bird was seen from la Arenilla
hide, RN Santoña, Cantabria on 10.11 (Álvaro Bustamante)
A corpse of a dead bird, moulting into winter plumage, was found on 20.11
at the beach of Almenara, Plana Baixa, Castelló. This is the 3rd
record for the whole Valencia region (País Valencià) (David

3.11 the 1st confirmed bird reached RN Santoña y Noja, Cantabria,
at Canal de Ano (Juan Gómez Navedo and Alejandro García Herrera)Five
were counted on 12.11 at the same place (A.G.Herrera, J.Aja, V.Iturriaga,
B.Gomez,J.G.Navedo).On 28.11 there were at least two birds (M.Santillán,
P.Ibarrondo, A.Sanz, A.Lamsfus, J.J.Aja, J.Portillo) but the official count
of the reserve gives 8 birds on 25.11 (JG Navedo- SEO/BirdLife) (2)On 14.11
there were 2 at Cariño harbour, A Coruña, Galicia (Antonio
y Pablo Gutiérrez). (3) on 14.11 there was another at ría
de Ortigueira, A Coruña (Antonio y Pablo Gutiérrez).On 27.11
there were six at the same place (Antonio Gutiérrez) and four on

Great
Shearwater Puffinus gravis. On 20.11, 413 birds were counted
flying W from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia in a 3 hour count
(Antonio Sandoval). A good score!.
Balearic
Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus.18 were counted off Estaca
de Bares, Galicia on 1.11 (Antonio Gutiérrez, Pablo Pita, Pablo
Gutiérrez e Ignacio Allegue). By 3.11 there were c.30 birds at Roses
bay, Girona (Jordi Martí-Aledo).On 1.11.04 there were over
200 birds in different rafts off playa de Lanzada, Sanxenxo/ O Grove, Pontevedra
(César Vidal, Rafael y Tito Salvadores)On 7.11, 496Puffinus
mauretanicus were counted in an hour while flying N off cabo silleiro,
Baiona, Pontevedra (César Vidal). Extremely interesting sightings
from the Straits of Gibraltar: on 5.11 (08:40-12:45), 521
mauretanicus
were
seen coming from NE and entering the Straits. With them, a minimum of 6
Levantine
S (Puffinus yelkouan).This is one
of the few confirmed sightings in the Straits in the last year and talks
of birds entering the Mediterranean coming from the Atlantic. On
6.11, from 11:00-13:00, 785 Balearics were counted
while 26 Levantine S were noted going W like the year before (Ernest FJ
Garcia)On 12.11 during an hour of continous observation from Cabo Silleiro,
Baiona, Pontevedra, 463 birds were counted heading north (!) and only one
south (César Vidal). The area is holding a large concentration of
small fish 'Lanzón'
Ammodites tobianus and a small crab 'Patexo'
Polybius

The shearwaters are preying on these species in what is considered
an exceptional year for both fish and crab in the area by local fishermen
(César Vidal). On 6-7.11 six birds were seen entering Algeciras
harbour, Cádiz (Salvador Garcia). By 5.8.11 from 120-140 birds were
counted off Complejo Intermareal de Umia-O Grove, Pontevedra. This coast
had held up to 2040 birds in 15.10 (Xurxo Pinheiro). On 9.11 there were
only 8 off Guadalhorce river mouth, Málaga (Antonio Tamayo).On 22.11
there was a compact party of 957-1120 birds less than 1 nautic mile off
Remolar lagoon, Llobregat delta, Barcelona (N.Urios; F.X.Santaeufemia,
A.Ramal, R.Gutiérrez), where 0 birds were seen during the census
of 19.11 (FX Santaeufemia). The numbers of the count differ according to
eye count (957) or digital photo counting (1120). See a photo of part of
the group below (A.Ramal). On 19.11 at Penyal d'Ifac, Calp, Alacant
there was also 1 Mediterreanean (Levantine) Shearwater (P.yelkouan)with
the 140 mauretanicus recorded (A.Jacobo, J.Santamaria). On 21.11
there were 35 at cap d'Horta, Alacant (Elías Gomis)

note: Please note the need for caution regarding hybridisation with clanga
in this species. Reading of Vali & Lohmus (2004) Nestling characteristics
and identification of the lesser spotted eagle Aquila pomarina,
greater spotted eagle A. clanga, and their hybrids (J Ornithol
(2004) 145: 256–263) is strongly reccomended. |

was seen at Granada coast, Andalucia. On 21.10 it was alone at playa de
Poniente, and on 25.10 it was with 150 Larus fuscus graellsii, 25 Larus
ridibundus, 6 Larus
melanocephalus,
70 Larus michahellis and 1 Larus audouinii at playa de la Charca,

seen at playa de Cedeira, A Coruña, Galicia. They were a male and
an immature (Antonio Fernández, Luz). There are not previous accepted
records for Spain but some candidates for 'B' list (ed.comment).(2) From
1-4 birds were seen at Cobas, near cabo Prior, Ferrol, A Coruña
on 3.11 (P.Pita, A.Gutiérrez, P.Gutiérrez). This site is
at 25 km distance from the 1st site (Cedeira) all in all suggesting natural
arrivals (P.Gutiérrez in litt.)See one of the birds of Cedeira below
(Antonio Fernandez Marín) and a thumbnail of one of
the birds of Cobas here It seems that 30 years ago a bird was shot
at Zumaia, Gipuzkoa (Aitor Leiza) See a thumbnail here
(3)On 18.11 three were reported at rasa de Lluces, Llastres, Asturies (Efrén
García Iglesias) but they were not relocated anymore.

birds: 2 1w males and a 1w female all at Cabo Peñes (Daniel L.Velasco,
