Mute
Swan Cygnus olor. On 10-11.10 a family group of 5 swans (2 adults
and 3 juveniles) was recorded at Balsa de Zolina, Aranguren, Navarra/Nafarroa.
It is the first record of this species for the site (Gorka Gorospe).The
two swans reported last month at cal Tet, Llobregat delta, Barcelona, were
still there on 14.10 (Ferran López)The swans from Balsa de Zolina
were still there by 12.10 but on 15.10 one juvenile had dissapeared (Gorka
Gorospe).There was one at La Nava, Palencia on 14.10 (Enrique Gómez
Crespo). At Almería, there were 3 swans at laguna de Marinas, Roquetas
on 13.10 (Raimundo Martín Rodríguez).

Branta bernicla A bird was seen at ria de Foz, Lugo on
12.10 (César M Álvarez Laó, Clemente Álvarez
Usátegui). At ria de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies, there was
one on 13.10 (Adolfo Villaverde Garrido).

Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea One was seen at la Mata del Fang,
at PN Albufera de València, València on 16.10 (R.Argilés,
M.Briasco, L.Pastor, Gregorio Ros)
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca A drake was seen at La Furta, Corvera, Asturies on 13.10 (Clemente Álvarez Usátegui).Three birds were seen at La Santomera reservoir, Murcia on 30.10 (Tomás Velasco).There were 5 ferruginous Ducks (3M, 2F) at Laguna El Portil, Huelva (John Butler). On 31.10 there was one at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca (Juan M. Ruiz, Angel González Mendoza) Scaup

marila. First this autumn: on 22.10 one immature was found at La Linera,
Ría de Eo, Asturies/Lugo (Pablo Fernández García).
NEOAVES
Great Shearwater Puffinus gravis. One was seen off Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia on 3.10 (I.Allegue, A.Gutiérrez, A.Sandoval, P.Gutiérrez). Balearic
Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus.On 1.10 there were c.350
birds in several flocks off Torremolinos, Málaga (Andy Paterson).
On 2.10 there were at least 672 flying E at the same place (A.Paterson).
On 30.9 there were 800+ at the same place (A.Paterson)At Cap de Creus,
Girona there were 35 on 6.10 together with 18 P.yelkouan (Ponç
Feliu)On 5.10 there were 5 off cabo Matxitxako, Bizkaia, and at the same
place there were 6 birds on 11.10 (Oscar San José). On 15.10 there
were four off faro del Pescador, Cantabria (Karmelo de Dios), the same
author reporting a Mediterranean Shearwater (P.yelkouan) with them.
Also at Cantabria, eight were seen on 11.10 off La Ballena, Oriñón
(Juanma Domínguez Robledo). The bulk of the Atlantic oversummering
population seems to have already abandoned the E Cantabric (and France)
and it is now at Galicia: on 15.10 there were 1500-2000 birds feeding and
concentrated around O Grove, between A Lanzada beach and the ria de Arousa
entrance, Pontevedra (Xurxo Pinheiro).There were over 700 birds inside
Ría de Pontevedra, Galicia. Even reaching the Marín latitude,
well 'inland'. The area is holding a large fish stock these days (Emilio
Martínez).On 22.10 there were none at Llobregat Delta Barcelona
(F.López) but on 24.10 a party of 500 was recorded at the same place
associated to dolphins
Tursiops truncatus (Xavier Larruy). There
appears to be some movement of birds entering the Mediterranean since on
26.10 there were over 1100 birds off Guadalhorce river mouth, Málaga
(Andy Paterson).Hence a grand total of 1600 for the Mediterranean is the
minimum quantity to be counted.There were at least 75 off cape Norfeu,
Cap de Creus Natural Park, Girona on 28.10. With them at least 10 P.yelkouan
and 14 C.diomedea (Ponç Feliu). On 23.10 thre was a strong
movement to the E off Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia: 588 birds
were counted in 5h15' (112 birds/h). The observers believe that over 1000
birds could have passed off Estaca that day. The following day the frequence
decreased to 40 birds/hour (Antonio Sandoval). On 31.10 29 were counted
at the same place (Antonio Gutiérrez, Pablo Pita, Pablo Gutiérrez
e Ignacio Allegue) in the middle of a strong seabirds migration which included
28.105 gannets Morus bassanus in 4hours 30 minutes (!).At Cabo de
Palos, Cartagena, observamos paso de Pardela Balear, 235 birds were noted
between 10:25 and 11:55 hours (Antonio Hernández).At ría
de Arousa, there were parties of 10, 20 and 50 birds on 31.10. Amongst
them a Mediterranean Shearwater Puffinus yelkouan was reported
(Gorka Ocio, Andrés Bermejo, Xurxo Pinheiro y Yolanda Ozaeta). Reports
from Alicante: On 27.10 there were 30-40 at Port de La Vila Joiosa, Alacant
(Antonio Jacobo Ramos). The same day there were 15-20 birds at Cap de l’Horta,
Alacant(Antonio Jacobo Ramos). On 31/10, 8 were couned off Cap de l’Horta,
Alacant (Elias Gomis) while the same day four were at Illa de Benidorm
(Antonio Jacobo Ramos).On 30.10.04 there were a minimum of 400 birds
off cabo Silleiro, Baiona, Pontevedra (César Vidal, Rafael y Tito
Salvadores) with birds moving north, south and around.
Great White Egret Egretta alba. Observations outside of regular site at PN Deltade l'Ebre, Tarragona. On 2.10 there was one at Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València (Ignacio Nebot-Gil). One was also at Remolar-Filipines reserve, Llobregat delta, Barcelona (A.Ramal, R.Gutiérrez) where a roost of 3 was noted the night before (Joan Castelló)On 8.10 there were seven at Sils marshes, Girona (Hubert Mas, Jordi Gimisó) On 1-2.10 there was a bird at Els Muntanyans, Torredembarra, Tarragona (Jordi Vázquez; A.Tomàs). At embalse de Santomera, Murcia, one was seen on 9-10.10 (Miguel Angel Núñez).There was one at Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València on 16.10 (Máximo Sánchez Cobo).At la Janda, Cádiz, there was one on 17.10 (Javier de la Cruz).There were 2 at Pals ricefields, Girona, on 13.10 (Carles Barriocanal et al).There was one at Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 16.10 (Santi Hernàndez Orenes). At Pego marshes, Valencia, there was one on 10-12.10 (Jules Sykes). Javier Moreno). On 31.10 there were 7 at Tablas de Daimiel, Ciudad Real (Bruno Herrero). On 27.10 there were 3 at the Entremuros, Aznalcazar, Sevilla (John Butler) Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. At Pedreña, Santander, Cantabria, there were four on 3.10, one of which was carrying a PVC ring coded 6HR (Álvaro Bustamante)On 8.10 the same birds had moved to RN Marismas de Santoña y Noja, Cantabria (Álvaro Bustamante).There was one at La Janda, Cádiz, on 7.10 (Blas López et al). On 6.10 there were 2 1st winters at Pego marsh, Valencia (Jules Sykes). On 4.10 there were 15 at Manjavacas, Castilla La Mancha (John Muddeman, Letizia Herrera). There was one adult at Arguedas, Navarra on 3.10 (Ignacio Gámez).On 4.10 there was one at Ria de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies (Emilio J García Fdez.). LARGEST-EVER FLOCK IN SPAIN (and Europe?): 3025 birds in a single flock at ricefields at Isla Menor, Doñana, Sevilla on 9.10, counted thanks to digital panoramic pictures (Jorge Garzón)On 4.10 there was one at ría de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies (Emilio J García Fernández et al).The four birds reported at Cantabria coast were no longer at Santoña from 8.10 (Alejandro G Herrera) but on 14.10 were seen from a boat flying W 1 nm offshore off Oriñon, Cantabria and two hours later flying E off Castro Urdiales, Cantabria (Gorka Ocio). 34 birds were reported on 17.10 at Marismas del Guadalquivir at Sevilla (Rafa Romero, Javier Salcedo).On 10-12.10 there were two at Pego Marsh, Valencia (Jules Sykes). Crake
Porzana parva. One crashed into a fishing vessel the night
of 31.10 off Santurtzi, Bizkaia, Euskadi (Gorka Ocio).The same day, an
adult female was seen at Aldearrubia, Salamanca (Juan José Ramos
Encalado)
Corncrake Crex crex. Rarity in Catalonia. A bird was found when it crashed into the windows of the 'C' terminal of Barcelona's Airport, El Prat de Llobregat, Barcelona on 3.10. It was fortunately found by a birder who works at the airport (J.Diego González) and brought to the Remolar-Filipines reserve during the World Birdwatch celebration. As it was in perfect condition, it was ringed and released into the wild with great coverage, even from local TV! (see photo below, Ricard Gutiérrez).One was seen at Santa Cruz de la Palma, Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 1.10 (Félix Manuel Medina).One was found exhausted at Palencia on 31.10 (Noemí Garcia). It was released short after it was recovered.
Crested
Coot Fulica cristata There was one PVC marked 'HHO' at Brazo
del Este, Sevilla, on 1.10 (Rafa Romero). At laguna de Louro, A Coruña,
Galicia there was one bird PVC marked 'OOJ' on 3.10 (Alfonso López
López) . This bird came from la Cañada de los Pájaros,
Sevilla and was released at Zoñar lagoon, Córdoba. On 14.10,
the male 'UA' returned to Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta, Barcelona.
It had been out of the delta since last may in an unknown area (Xavier
Sampere; Ricard Gutiérrez, F.Xavier Santaeufemia; X.Bayer).

carrying a pvc neck band (084, 086) and the 3rd was a juvenile associated
to the two adults (Juan Pérez Contreras, Beatriz Pérez Machado).See

(numbers 012 and 017) at the Laguna

morinellus. On 2.10 there were 2 at Sierra Tejeda, Málaga/Granada
over 2000 m high (Antonio Pulido Pastor).On 11.10 there was a bird at Valdoviño
beach, A Coruña, Galicia in company of other plovers (Xabier Remirez,
Antonio Fernández Marín, Luz Fernández). See a photo
below (Xabier Remirez). At Cabo Peñes, Gozón, Asturies, one
was seen on 12.10 (Jorge Valella, C.Álvarez Usátegui, J.L.
Alonso Orrasco).There was one 1st calendar year bird at Moniello, Gozón,
Asturies on 12.10 (Jose Antonio García Fernández). Temminck's
Stint Calidris temminckii. On 1.10 there were 3 at Brazo del
Este, Sevilla (Rafa Romero) There were 2 birds at Racó de l'Olla,
PN l'Albufera de València, on 10.10 (J.I.Díes).On 19.10 one
was seen at laguna Salada de Pétrola, Albacete (Jose Antonio &
David Cañizares).
Marsh
Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis. One Marsh Sandpiper was at the
Marismas de Odiel, Huelva on 30.10 (John Butler)

Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus.There were four (2 ads + 2 juv)
at Salinas del Cerrillo, RN Punta Entinas-Sabinar, Almería (E.Alba,

6.10 still the four of them were at the same place (Raimundo Martín) Little Gull Larus minutus.Only accidental records. On 3.10, a bird was found at a pond at Santa Cristina del Páramo, León. This is the 1st record-ever for this inland province (David Miguelez Carbajo, Carlos Zumalacárregui). García Sánchez).
Lesser Crested Tern Sterna bengalensis. There was one at Tabarca island, Alacant on 2.10 (Miguel Ángel Pavón). More on this record at Natur@licante website (opens in another window). On 9.10 there was one at Sancti Petri, Cádiz (M.Villaécija, P.Chiclana)There was one adult winter plumaged bird at Oliva marina, València on 25.10 (Jules Sykes).There was one at Santa Pola saltpans, Alacant on 18.10 (Antonio Jacobo). Swift Apus caffer . A migrant swift of this species was seen
flying West at high speed at Torremolinos on 10.10 (Andy Paterson). On
2.10 an adult was seen bringing food to a former swallow nest at Sierra
de las Villuercas (John Muddeman, Ray Nowicki).
Aquatic
Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola. On 4.10 there were 2
at Salinetes, Mallorca (per Pere Vicens).
Snow
Bunting Plectrophenax nivalis. A bird was seen on 20.10 at El
Cóscaro, Villanueva de Oscos, Asturies(Pablo Fernández García).At
Penedos Blancos, Castropol, Asturies, there were 2 on 27.10 (Pablo Fernández).
