Recent Reports: Latest sightings AUGUST 2004 NEWS
GALLOANSERAE
Mute Swan Cygnus olor. On 3.8 there was still one at Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta (R.Gutiérrez, N.Urios; A.Rodríguez-Sinovas).The same bird was relocated at cal Tet lagoon, RN Ricarda -ca l'Arana, Llobregat delta on 20.8 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Armand Ramal), see a thumbnail here.At Marismas Blancas, Cantabria, there were 2 adults and 3 juveniles on 5.8 (Fran Alcalá).On 28.8 there were 8, a family group, at Marismas blancas, Astillero, Cantabria. There were 4 juveniles, 2 1st summers, one adult and an eigth bird, either an adult or a 1st summer. In this place a pair has bred for three years in a row (Maite Garrigós, Amaia Pérez, Juan Manuel Pérez de Ana). See a photo below (JM Pérez de Ana).
NEOAVES Fulmar Fulmarus glacialis. Three were seen on 21.8 in the extremely-successful (see below other seabird records) seawatch off Estaca de Bares, A Coruña (SGO, communicated by César Vidal).On 21.8 afternoon from Estaca de Bares headland, 2 were counted in 2h30' (Antonio Sandoval). Great Shearwater Puffinus gravis.On 15.8 one was seen from Estaca de Bares, Mañón, A Coruña, heading north (Antonio Sandoval).Four were seen on 21.8 in a seawatch off Estaca de Bares, A Coruña (SGO, communicated by César Vidal).On 21.8 from Estaca de Bares headland, 22 were counted in 2h30' (Antonio Sandoval). Five more were seen the following day 22.8 in 6 hours (Antonio Sandoval).Two miles off Santoña, Cantabria, there were 2 birds on 26.8 (Gorka Ocio). Balearic
Shearwater Puffinus
mauretanicus. On 14.8 18 were seen passing in front of Estaca de Bares,
A Coruña, Galicia (Antonio Sandoval). 66 more were seen the following
day (A.Sandoval)There were c.20 off Tarragona on 24.8 (R.Gutiérrez,
A.Ramal) and some off Llobregat river mouth the same evening (Xesco Macià).Observations
off Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia: 17 birds on 20.8 in 1h 15'
; 37 birds on 21.8 in 2h30' and 123 birds on 22.8 in 6h along the day (Antonio
Sandoval). Groups have not reached yet Catalonia, where still scarce (<
15 birds) off Garraf and Llobregat delta coast on 26.8, outnumbered by
slightly commoner Yelkouan Shearwater c.30 birds (A.Ramal, F.López,
E.Guinart, R.Gutiérrez). Two miles off Santoña, Cantabria,
there were c.30 birds on 26.8 (Gorka Ocio).
Great
White Egret Egretta alba. On 3.8 there was a bird in complete
breeding plumage at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà (Jordi Martí-Aledo).At
S'Albufera de Mallorca there were 1-2 birds on 11.8. The species has oversummered
in the area but breeding suspects have not been definitely confirmed (Maties
Rebassa, Sebastià Torres).There were 27 at el Garxal area, PN Delta
de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 7.8 (Clemente Álvarez).At the same delta,
where the species is regular and fairly common, there were 7 at Migjorn
area on 20.8 (Raphaël Lebrun & Eva Andreu).On 27.8 there was one
at Sils, Girona (Alfons Dg).
Glossy
Ibis Plegadis falcinellus At Brazo del Este, Sevilla, there
were c.500 birds on 30.8 (Paco Chiclana).At Guadalhorce river, near the
mouth, there were three birds on 24.8 (Antonio Tamayo).
Black-shouldered
Kite Elanus caeruleus Only extralimital
records. On 21.8 there was one euring
3 between Garriguella and Perelada, Girona (Josep Rost).On 21.8 a bird
was seen at Cantonigrós, Osona, Barcelona also well out of breeding
range (Pere Cortinas).The l'Albera bird was seen again on 23.8 at Cantallops,
Girona (Albert Campsolinas).This Girona sighting has been that of a an
out-of-range breeding pair: a bird was already seen by early june (Joan
Budó and Enric Capalleras) near Garriguella, Girona. The bird was
seen for a month in that area (E.Capalleras, M.Barrios).Then by early july
a 2nd adult was found in the same area and was mating the first. On 9.8
the two adults were seen with a juvenile (M.Barrios, A.Campsolinas).
Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus. A 1st summer male was seen at Palma de Mallorca airport at least on 24-26.8 (Lalo Ventoso; Manolo Suárez). A bird was brought to Santa Faç recovery center, Alacant and by early august was still there for recovery (Elias Gomis).Read more in Spanish about this bird at Naturalicante.On 14.8 there was one seen migrating South at Puig de l'Àliga, Alt Penedès, Barcelona (Xavier Bayer, Cisco Guasch, Octavi Burruel, Marc Peris)At Montalt, Tivissa, Tarragona, there was one dark phase bird on 18.8 (Albert Cama, Eduard Soler, Montse Fuguet).Four migrated S over Sant mateu mountain, Alella, Barcelona on 21.8 (Jordi Sala).On 24.8 there were 3 well inland at Solsona, Lleida (Gerard Bota). Purple Gallinule Porphyrio porphyrio. An immature Purple Gallinule crash-landed in Gibraltar city, Gibraltar, on 11.8 evening. This is the first record for Gibraltar. It was released on 12.8 at the Guadiaro estuary, Sotogrande, Cádiz (news supplied by Ernest FJ Garcia/ Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society). Dotterel
Charadrius
morinellus. At Mezquetillas, Soria, a bird was heard in flight on 20.8.
The area held 9 birds in 2002 (Juan Luis Hernández/SEO-Soria). On
27.8 there were 8 at Cayo peak, 30 km N of Soria, at 1700 m above sea level
(F.Rubio, J.Muñoz, J.L.Hernández). On 25.8 the first four
migrant adults found at Almería were seen in the same area as in
2003 (where arrived on 26.8.2003) (Martín Rodríguez).On 28.8
at the Cayo mountain there were seven birds at 17:45 hours, calling while
flying S (Carlos Sánchez).On 26.8 there were two adults near Amoladeras
area, Almería (Raimundo Martín Rodríguez).
Temminck's
Stint Calidris temminckii. On 3.8 there were five adults in
front of Bassa dels Pollancres hide, Remolar-Filipines reserve, Llobregat
delta, Barcelona (Ricard Gutiérrez, N.Úrios). See thumbnails
here. Still some birds around PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona
(Jordi Martí-Aledo).There was one at platja de la Marquesa, PN Delta
de l'Ebre on 5.8 (D.Bigas, R.Gutiérrez, S.Sales, C.Álvarez-Usátegui,
Iago)and two more on 6.8 (C.Álvarez-Usátegui, D.Bigas). There
were 2 at Remolar-Filipines reserve on 4.8 (Xavier Sampere).On 5.8 there
were three at Alfassar ricefields ,PN L'Albufera de València, València
(J.I.Díes). These birds had been seen in previous days by Toni Alcocer.On
11.8 there were 2 at S'Albufera de Mallorca (Sebastià Torrens, Maties
Rebassa). There was one at Buda Island, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona,
on 6.8 (C.Álvarez-Usátegui, D.Bigas).On 5.8 there was one
at Besós river mouth, Sant Adrià del Besós, Barcelona
(Xavier Larruy).On 15.8 there were 4 at Cerro de las Cigüeñas,
Aznalcázar, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana).On 23.8 there was one at Filipines
marsh, Llobregat delta (Ferran López).On 30.8 there were 2 at the
same place (F.López, X.Dot).There were two at Brazo del Este, Sevilla
on 30.8 (Paco Chiclana).At basses de Delfià, Girona, there were
two 1st winter birds (J.Luis Copete, David Perpiñán).
Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis. There were 2 at El Garxal area, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 7.8 within a flock of 87 T.erythropus and 3 T.nebularia (Clemente Álvarez-Usátegui).On 22-23.8 there were two birds at Marjal de Pego, València (Jules Sykes). See a thumnbail here Red-necked
Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus. There were two birds at Salinas
de Cerrillos, Punta Entinas-Sabinar, Almería, on 11.8 (Xesco Macia).

Sabine's Gull Larus sabini. On 15.8 2 were seen migrating in front of Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia (Antonio Sandoval).On 21.8 in a seawatch off Estaca de Bares, A Coruña (the particular galician version of the British 'Scillonian pelagic'), over 50 birds were counted (SGO, communicated by César Vidal) See a thumbnail of one of the birds here .On 26.8 five were near a fishing vessel 4 miles off the Oriñon, Cantabria coast, N Spain (Gorka Ocio). Lesser
Crested Tern Sterna bengalensis. There was an adult on 9.8 at
Racó de l'Olla, PN l'Albufera de València. Seen at dawn,
it was within a Sandwich terns roost. It suddently dissapeared without
being relocated again (J.I.Díes). See a photo below (bird in the
background marked with an arrow).On 15.8 there was an adult at the same
place, possibly being the same reported above (J.I.Dies & Bosco Dies).
See a photo below (bird facing left). The Albufera bird was still attending
the same roost on 19.8 (J.I.Dies). One was seen on 18.8 at la Rogera lagoon,
PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà within a party of 40 Sandwich Terns (Jordi
Martí-Aledo, Teresa Montràs).A bird was reported off Mallorca
on 10.8.2004 (Steve Norman).The Albufera de Valencia bird was last seen
on 22.8 (Bosco Dies).
Arctic
Tern Sterna paradisaea Accidental
in the Mediterranean. An adult bird was seen
at Racó de l'Olla, PN l'Albufera de València on 13.8.2004

White-winged Black Tern Chlidonias leucopterus On 5.8 there was an adult at Alfassar ricefields ,PN L'Albufera de València, València (J.I.Díes). See a thumbnail here (J.I.Dies)On 6.8 there were two at Buda island together with c.1000 Black Terns C.niger and a flock of additional 1000 terns of the three regular species sandvicensis, hirundo and albifrons (David Bigas, Clemente Álvarez-Usátegui).There was an adult moulting into winter plumage at cal Tet lagoon, RN Ricarda -ca l'Arana, Llobregat delta on 20.8 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Armand Ramal).There was one adult moulting into winter plumage at El Garxal, delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 20.8 (Raphaël Lebrun & Eva Andreu).Another similarly pllumaged bird, or the same, was at the same area on 28.8 (Xesco Macia).On 31.8 there was a bird at Marismas del Odiel, Huelva (Paco Chiclana). White-rumped
Swift Apus caffer. There were some on 15.8 entering a nest at
Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs, between Málaga and Granada (Francisco 'Kirri'
Botella, Cayetano, A.Tamayo)At Casares, Málaga, on 3.8 there was
a bird among many hundreds Common, Pallid and Alpine Swifts (Stefan Wahlstedt)
Aquatic
Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola. On 7.8 four birds were trapped
and ringed at La Nava, Palencia. Another was seen on 11.8 (F.Jubete, E.Gómez-Crespo
per C.Álvarez-Usátegui).On 20.8 one was ringed at Villastrigo
del Páramo, León. It was an adult. See a photo below and

two days, five more birds were trappe (D.Miguélez).
