Swan Cygnus olor . There were 3 at Marismas Blancas, Astillero,
Cantabria on 2.2 (JM Pérez de Ana).The total count of Mute Swans
for the Santander bay would be of six birds counted on 1.2 at ensenada
de San Bartolomé, Santander (Fernando Arce).
Bean Goose Anser fabalis. The Aiguamolls de l'Empordà bird, featured the last months was still there on 10.2 (P.Feliu, I.Batet, J.Sanz, E.Capalleras, T.Montràs, J. Martí-Aledo). White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons There was one 1w at Ría del Eo, Asturies/Galicia on 1.2 (M Antonio Fernández, J.Valella, P.Fernández, D López Velasco). There was one at Sariñena, Huesca on 1.2 (Pablo Pascual).There as one at Santoña, Cantabria, on 5.2 (JG Navedo, J.Aja, J.A.Gómez, M.López). There were 2 at Laguna del Oso, Ávilaon 6.2 (Rafael Sánchez, Juan Ramón Cuervo).There were 4 birds at Villafáfila on 10.2 (JB Hormaechea, Gorka Ocio). See a photo below ( © JB Hormaechea). The ria de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies bird coming from 2003 was still there on 9.2 (Adolfo Villaverde).There were two flavirostris at Villafáfila, Zamora on 7.2 (Beatriz Iglesias, LM Alonso, Clemente Álvarez).There were up to 13 at la Nava on 12.2 (Juan B Hormaechea, Gorka Ocio).There was one at Boada, Palencia on 22.2(Alejandro García Herrera, Fernando Arce, Uca, Guillermo Rodríguez)
c.f. Hybrid Bar-headed x Canada Goose Anser indicus x B.canadensis. On 7.2 there was a bird assumed to be an hybrid between these two species at Villafáfila, Zamora (Beatriz Iglesias, LM Alonso, Clemente Álvarez). Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis. The bird at Sariñena, Huesca found this winter was still there on 1.2 (Javier Capalvo). A.Bustamante, J.Aja, J.A. Gómez).One was seen near the coast 1 km
S of Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona on 26.2 (Jordi Vázquez
de Luca).
NEOAVES
Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena. There was one at Santoña, Cantabria, on 5.2 (JG Navedo, J.Aja, J.A.Gómez, M.López).On 20.2 the Santoña wildfowl count gave two birds (JG Navedo, A.Bustamante, J.Aja, J.A. Gómez). Balearic
Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus.On 10-18.1 a total of 968 were
counted off Castelló province coasts, quite a large number (Ecologistes
en Acció, RN Illes Columbrets).
On 17.2 there were 140 birds off Cap de Creus, Girona (Ponç Feliu). Simultaneous counts at 12:00 on 19.2 off delta de la Tordera, Girona; Llobregat delta, Barcelona and Tarragona beach gave only 6 birds off Tordera (F.López; R.Gutiérrez; F.X.Santaeufemia,X.Sampere). This lack of birds coindides with scarce captures of the sardine fishing fleet (ed.comment)
So if the figures are accurated, there could be at least c.8390 alive Balearic Shearwaters since the 3250 and 5000 count seem to be simultaneous. Mediterranean Shearwater Puffinus yelkouan. Well documented Atlantic sighting. On 1.2 from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, a bird was seen flying side by side of a Balearic Shearwater P.mauretanicus (Antonio Sandoval). The structural features were correctly noted, white colour distribution and jizz compared to the also present those days Manx Shearwaters There were 35-40 off Cap de Creus, Girona on 17.2 (Ponç Feliu) Great White Egret Egretta alba.There were 4 at Caño Guadiamar, Sevilla on 1.2 (John Butler). There was one at Salobrar de Campos, Mallorca on 2.2 (G.Carrasco, N.Segre, R.Mas, L.Parpal)There were 4 at Caño de Guadiamar,Hinojos, Sevilla on 7.2 (Daniel L Huertas)There were 3 at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà on 10.2 (P.Feliu, I.Batet, J.Sanz, E.Capalleras, T.Montràs, J. alba modesta. 2nd
for Spain. There was one on 6.2 (V.Risco) to 15.2 first at Embalse de Arrocampo,
then at balsa de Cerro Alto, near Saucedilla-Almaraz, Cáceres amongst
a group of 11 alba (Juan Antonio García Giménez, Ana
Castaño).Later relocated on 18.2 in the N of Cáceres together
with 15 E.alba alba (V.Risco, Javier Briz). Glossy
Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. There were 70-80 at Jose Antonio
Valverde center, PN Doñana, Sevilla on 1.2 (John Butler).There were
2 at Miguel Esteban, Toledo on 7.2 (Juan M Ruiz).There were 18 at Brazo
del Este, Sevilla on 19.2 (Daniel L Huertas).There was one at laguna de
los Prados, Málaga city on 17.2 within a Cattle Egret breeding colony
(Antonio Tamayo)
Crested
Coot Fulica cristata. There were 11 at Lucio del Lobo, Sevilla,
on 1.2 (John Butler). Four more were at Caño de Guadiamar, Aznalcazar,
Sevilla on 1.2 (J.Butler). There were 5 at laguna hondilla, Espera, on
1.2 (Daniel L Huertas). One of the released birds in Mallorca, with collar
'043' was found dead at Menorca beach on 3.2 (Oscar García/ForumAus)There
were 11 at Lucio del Lobo, Aznalcázar, Sevilla on 7.2 (Daniel L
Huertas)From 5-8.2 there was one marked '03C' at Talayuelas lagoon, Cuenca
(David Hohn Barritt, Sandra García; Rafa Muñoz). On 11.2
the birds marked XP and UT were seen at Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Emma
Guinart, David Camps). The bird 03W, released at Llobregat delta on 1.4.2003
was shot by hunters at Ebre Delta in january 2004 (PNDE).Four birds of
those released in Mallorca were seen on 14.2: 05L, 023, 08 and another
uncollared at S'Albufera, Muro (Lluc Martorell)There was one unringed bird
at PN Marismas del Odiel, Huelva, on 28.2 (J.Salcedo, R.Romero).On
29.2 there was one with a pvc ring at Espera, Cádiz and another
without at Lebrija-las Cabezas, Sevilla (R.Romero).
Temminck's Stint Calidris temminckii. On 30.1 there were 11 at Los Labrados, Aznalcazar, Sevilla (John Butler).
