Balearic and Yelkouan Shearwaters Puffinus mauretanicus & P.yelkouan. On 24.12, in an hour count off Cap de Creus, Girona, there were 17 mauretanicus and 39 yelkouan besides 25 unidentified (too far) (Ponç Feliu). On 19.12 there were 19 mauretanicus at Roses bay and 4 yelkouan (Jordi Martí Aledo)

Great White Egret Egretta alba.On 2.12 there was one at PN el Hondo, Alacant (Malcolm Palmer). Another was at Embalse del Pardo, Madrid on 1.12 (Adolfo Rodriguez). One was at at Brazo de la Torre and Entremuros ricefields, Sevilla on 2.12 (Alberto Plata Ortíz).There were 2 aty brazo del Este, Sevilla on 3.12 (Paco Chiclana). On 1.12 there was one near Bellcaire d'Urgell, Lleida, where another or the same had been seen on 13.11 (Roger Guillem Martí).There was one at Embalse del Pardo, Madrid on 1.12 (Adolfo Rodríguez, G.O. El Pardo).There was one at Utxesa reservoir, Lleida, on 7.12 (Ricard Gutiérrez, H.Arbonés, A.Gutiérrez et al). Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. There were over 1000 at Brazo del Este, Sevilla on 1.12 (Paco Chiclana)There were 4 at S'Albufera de Mallorca on 15.12 (Pere Vicens).
 

Sacred Ibis* Threskiornis aethiopicus. Four  records (1, 2, 3 ,4)  The adult at Sevilla ricefields, near Guadalquivir river found on 19.10 was still there on 1.12 with +1000 Glossy Ibises (Paco Chiclana)(2) The bird at ria de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies was still there on 5-22.12 (Adolfo Vilalverde Garrido)(3) The bird present at S'Albufera de Mallorca this autumn was seen again on 15.12 (Pere Vicens)(4) There were 2 immature birds at rio Guadalhorce, Málaga 4 km north of the river mouth on 26.12. It is not yet clear if these birds are the same or partly the same of those seen this autumn there (Antonio Tamayo). On 27.12 the number raised to three (A.Tamayo).

Mute Swan Cygnus olor. The cal Tet bird at Llobregat delta, Barcelona was still there on 2.12 (Ferran López).Still there on 4.12 (R.Gutiérrez, F.X. Santaeufemia, N.Urios; P.Esteban).There were four, one ad and 3 1w, at platja de Talamanca, Eivissa, Balearic Islands on 15.12 (Oliver Martínez). There was one inm at Balsa de Muskildigorri, Auza, Ultzama, Navarra on 12.12 (already seen there on 12.11 and intermitently thereafter, Gorka Gorospe).

Whooper Swan* Cygnus cygnus One record (1 via snail mail) (1) The two found this autumn at estuario del Anllons- Ensenada da Insua, Ponteceso Cabana, A Coruñam were still there on 6.12 (Xurxo Pinheiro).

Bean Goose Anser fabalis fabalis. A bird was located at El Cortalet, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona, on 2.12 (Jordi Martí Aledo; X. del Acebo, P.Feliu et al). The first fabalis for Catalonia. On 11.12 there were another 2 fabalis at La Nava, Palencia (Fernando Jubete, Ignacio Torres)Two arrived at ria de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies on 26.12 (Adolfo Villaverde, Juán Álvarez Gil; C.Alvarez et al).

Snow Goose* Anser caerulescens(1) There was one adult blue phase at Boada wetland, Palencia on 2.12. Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis. There was one at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca on 14.12 with c.2500 Greylag Geese (Octavio Infante, Angel González, F.Javier de la Cruz). See a thumbnail here. There was one near La Zaida, Zaragoza on 2.12 (Xavier Escobar). This is probably a long-stayer.The Azud bird was still there on 19.12 (A.Tamayo, S.García) and 21.12 (O.Infante, I.Catalán, J.de la Cruz). On 20.12 there were 3 at Villarín de Campos, Villafáfila, Zamora (Alfonso Rodrigo, Javier de la Cruz), one at least the following day (Adolfo Villaverde). On 20.12 there was a bird at Sariñena lagoon, Huesca (Fran Alcalà). There was one at Laguna del Oso, Ávila on 14.12 (Gabriel Sierra).There was one at laguna de Manjavacas, Cuenca on 23.12 (Óscar Rodríguez, Malo Gimeno).There was one 1w at Bahía de Santander (Javier de la Cruz) See a photo below. Hybrid Barnacle x Greylag Goose Branta leucopsis x Anser anser  An individual was seen neat the Barillos lagoon, within Villafáfila lagoons Nature Reserve on 24.12 (Alfonso Rodrigo)

Brent Goose Branta bernicla On 9.12 there were 2 at ria de Villaviciosa, Asturies, but only one from 22-26.12 (Adolfo Villaverde Garrido; J.Álvarez Gil). On 6-7.12 there was one at ria de Foz, Asturies/Lugo (A.Villaverde Garrido). At playa de Salinas, Castrillón, Asturies, there was one on 7.12 (Daniel López Velasco).At Tapioles, Villafáfila, Zamora, there was one on 20.12 (Alfonso Rodrigo, F.Javier de la Cruz).See a thumbnail hereThere were 2 at ensenada de San Simón, Arcade, Pontevedra on 28.12 (Adolfo Lomeña).

Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea.The 3 at Buda Island, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona first seen on 22.11 moved to el Fangar, also at Ebre delta on 1.12 (David Bigas). One was at at Brazo de la Torre and Entremuros ricefields, Sevilla on 2.12 (Alberto Plata Ortíz).There was a flock of 7 birds from 20-21.12 at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona. These birds were regarded as escapes as two birds were carrying color rings (M.Sánchez-Frou, P.Feliu, I.Batet, R.Fortià,J.Martí Aledo). See a thumbnail here. Mandarin Duck* Aix galericulata (1, 2,3) There was a female at Marisma Ramallosa, Pontevedra that was photographed on 4.12 (César Vidal) see a thumbnail here but that had been found c.10 days before by Luis Enrique Senra.(2) There was a female on 22-23.12 at la Murtra lagoon, Viladecans/Gavà, Barcelona (David Moret; Ferran López). This bird, of dubious origin,may have been there at least from November (J.Orta).(3)A female appeared at Bassa del Dofí, Castell d'Aro, Girona on 31.12 (Carlos Alvarez Cros).

Ring-necked Duck* Aythya collaris (1 ,, 2,3,4 by snail mail )(1) The female seen at Selga de Ordás reservoir, León at least from 1-8.11  was relocated on 6.12 (David Miguélez, Hector Astiarraga, Carlos Zumalacárregui)With this female it appeared a male on 6.12. On 22.12 it was relocated (Nacho Rodriguez,José María Colino). Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca. The 3 at Bombita ricefields, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona found on 14.11 were still there on 7.12 (David Bigas)There was a male at laguna de Campillo de Dueñas, Guadalajara on 2.12 (Xavier Escobar).There was a male at la Granda reservoir, Asturies on 13.12 (D.López Velasco, P.J.Menéndez). There was a female at playa de Sada, ria de Betanzos, A Coruña on 17.12 but present since November (Pablo y Antonio Gutiérrez).There were 2 at el Hondo, Alicante, on 14.12 (Carlos Gutiérrez Expósito).

Scaup Aythya marila. There was one female at Brazo de la Torre and Entremuros ricefields, Sevilla on 2.12 (Alberto Plata Ortíz).On 7.12 there were 2 at delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (David Bigas)There were two at ria de Eo, Asturies: a drake and a 1st winter female (Adolfo Villaverde Garrido). At Embalse de As Forcadas, A Coruña, there was one female on 18.12 (P.Gutiérrez).

Eider Somateria mollissima There were 3 1w/females inside the harbour of Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona on 19.12. Seen at close distance (F.X.Santaeufemia, Xavier Sampere).On 25.12 there was an immature male at San Vicente de la Barquera, Cantabria (Alvaro Rada). See a thumbnail here.

Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis The 2 birds found at Tancada lagoon, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 16.11 were photographed on 30.11 (Joan Gil, Josep Tantull et al)) and still present there on 7.12 (David Bigas). One would be an adult female and the other a 1st winter. Velvet Scoter Melanitta fusca. Only inland records. On 23.12 there was a male well inland: at Salada Jabonera de Alcañíz, Teruel (Fco.Javier Moreno). Possibly there were up to three on 20.12 (Clive Balch)

Goldeneye Bucephala clangula. There was one at Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 7.12 (David Bigas).There was one at Embalse de Trasona, Asturias on 13.12 (D.López Velasco, Pedro J Menéndez).Seen on 12.12 at La Granda (Elias García) and relocated on 30.12 at La Granda reservoir, Asturies (F.J.de la Cruz, G.Ocio, X.Piñeiro, J.Echegaray, P.Ruiz, S.Maestre, T.Alcocer).
 
 

White-tailed Eagle * Haliaaetus albicilla(1) THIRD FOR SPAIN. There was one inmmature (2nd - 4th year, yet to establish) at Santoña marshes, Cantabria from 7.12 (Gorka Artíguez) and 14.12 (SEO-Cantabria local group) . See a thumbnail here. Black-Shouldered Kite Elanus caeruleus. Extralimital record. Late sighting. On 29.11 there was one at Coves del Salnitre, near the N-II road, Collbató, Barcelona (Pere Serrano, Alex Ollé). 

Crested Coot Fulica cristata. There were c.10 birds in different places of Ebre Delta, Tarragona by 1.12 (David Bigas).Four of the Llobregat delta birds reintroduced on 1.4.2003 were at l'Encanyissada lagoon, Ebre delta, Tarragona on 2.12 (D.Bigas, F.Vidal).There were 3 at Laguna primera de Moguer, Huelva. All three with a PVC collar (Joclasera Jocla).On 29.12 there were three marked birds at l'Encanyissada: XP,XR and O3W. The latter had been reintroduced at Llobregat delta on 1.4.2003 (A.Martín, I.Bischoping, L.Pastor, G.Ros).

Dotterel Charadrius morinellus. The bird seen on November at Villamil, Tapia de Casariego, Asturies was still there on 1.12 (Xurde Gayol) On 25.12 there was a bird near the information center of Fuentedepiedra lagoon NR, Málaga (Angel Luis López, José Manuel Moreno).
 

Sociable Lapwing* Vanellus gregarius(1) There was one adult at Taraje lagoon, Puerto Real, Cádiz on 18.12 within a Lapwing flock (José Cabral, Carlos Gutiérrez Expósito). See a photo below

Lesser Yellowlegs * Tringa flavipes(1,2 ) There was one at Orgaz, Toledo on 8.12 (Juan Carlos Marín, Carlos Andrés Henao, Diego Perea).(2)There was a bird at desembocadura del Barranco de Tirajana, Tenefé, San Bartolomé, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands from 2.11 til 5.12.2003 (M.Avelino Suárez Farias).

Franklin's Gull* Larus pipixcan(1) There was a bird in winter plumage at Monumento natural Los Barruecos, de Malpartida de Cáceres, Extremadura on 26.12 (Guido Ceccolini, Anna Cenerini).

Ring-billed Gull* Larus delawarensis(1,2,3,4) There was a 2nd winter at San Lorenzo bedach, Gijon, Asturies on 3.12 (Nacho Vega)(2) There was one at Ribesella, ria del Sella, Asturies on 14.12 (Gabriel Silva).There was an adult at ria de Cedeira from 15-18.12 at least (Pablo y Antonio Gutiérrez)(4) There were 2 adults at Bahía de Santander, Cantabria on 30.12 (Daniel L Huertas)

Lesser Short-toed Lark Calandrella rufescens A flock (!) of 30-35 birds was reported from the edge of Embalse de Santillana, Madrid on 10.12 (Gabriel Martín). Second record for the Madrid community.

Pied Wagtail Motacilla alba yarrellii There was one in a Zamora city park on 23.12 (Alfonso Rodrigo).On 20.12 there was one at Isla Menor ricefields, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana).There were 3 with pipits at Saldaña, Palencia on 29.12 (Nacho Pontón).On 13.12 there was one at Arrosadia, Iruñea/Pamplona (Gorka Gorospe). At the same place there was another (the same?) on 30.12 with 3 white wagtails (G.Gorospe). On 26.12 there was another at Zamora urban parks, different from the featured above (Alfonso ROdrigo).

According to CR/SEO member Gorka Gorospe, this form is appearing every winter at Pamplona area although in scarce numbers. It seems that along the Cantabrican coast (Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia, Cantabria et...) it would be more regular and besides, more abundant. Therefore, for 2004 only notable extralimital records will be featured.
 
 

Desert Wheatear* Oenanthe deserti (1) On 29.12 one 1w of the northafrican race was trapped and ringed at Formentera, Balearic Islands (Santi Costa). In Spain there are 14 accepted records, 11 of which from the Canary Islands. In January 2001 there was one at Llobregat delta, Barcelona.

Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca. One was ringed at Palmones, Algeciras, Cádiz on 10.12 (Esteban Pablo Ortega,Gonzalo, J.Miguel González Perea)

Northern Great Shrike Lanius excubitor On 21.12 there was one around the Villafáfila area, in steppic areas (Adolfo Villaverde).On 28.12 there was one at S'Algar, Porto Colom, Mallorca (C.Binimelis).

Snow Bunting Plectrophenax nivalis. At Catalonia, NE Spain, there was a bird at Els Prats beach, Vila-Seca, Tarragona on 4.12 (Albert Cama, David Jiménez). There were 2 birds at Punta da Cruz, Castropol, Asturies on 2.12 (Pablo Fernández, Antonio Gutierrez Pita y Pablo Gutierrez Varga).Still there on 6.12 (Pablo Fernández García). On 3.12 there were 3 at Villamil, Tapia de Casariego, Asturies (Pablo Fernández García).At Baldaio, Carballo, A Coruña there was one on 6.12 (Xurxo Pinheiro).From 27-31.12 there was a bird at Llanos de Belén, Cáceres being the 1st for Extremadura seen during a Spainbirds bird trip (Santiago Villa).
