Recent Reports: Latest sightings OCTOBER NEWS
Fulmar Fulmarus glacialis. A bird was seen flying from Punta de la Vaca, Asturies on 3.10 (Elias García Sánchez).Record for the Mediterranean, where accidental: on 10.10 one was seen only 10m off Calaburra lighthouse, Málaga (Fran Vázquez Toro). Sooty Shearwater Puffinus griseus. Only extralimital records. There was one flying west on 3 October seen from Gibraltar (with 1700 Cory's Shearwaters, Calonectris diomedea) (Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society). On 4.10 there was another flying W with 144 Balearics also at Gibraltar (see below) (Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society). Balearic
Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus. Any
passage or important flock for this endangered species will be included.

birds were seen off Gibraltar moving west on 4.10 (Gibraltar Ornithological
& Natural History Society). On 29.9 there had been 416 birds on passage
seen in an hour (16:50-17:50 Solar hour) off Punta de la Vaca, Luango,
Asturies (J.Valella, D.López Velasco, D.Pascual Stevens, C.Alvarez
Usátegui). On 9-10.10 in counts off Aiguamolls de l'Empordà,
Tordera delta, Llobregat delta and Tarragona, Catalonia, only 9 birds were
seen off Punta de la Mora, Tarragona (E.Guinart, R.Gutiérrez) and
two probable yelkouan were noted off Aiguamolls (J.Martí
Aledo). The shearwaters are still scarce off Catalonia, NE Spain and are
in the move from the Atlantic into the Mediterranean where they are entering
these days. On 4.10 there was an important movement of birds off Euskadi
and Cantabria: at Faro del Pescador, Cantabria, there was a 150 birds/hour
passage with a handful of Manx and Sooty (Carmelo de Dios). On board
of 'Saltillo' fishermen boat, a flock of 40 were seen 0,5 miles off el
Abra, Bilbao, Euskadri (Gorka Ocio)Over 200 Puffinus seen on 11.10
from PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà during a 'Big Sit' were probably
Yelkouan shearwaters (P.yelkouan) (Ponç Feliu et al).There
were c.50 birds at Ter bay, Girona, on 11.10 (Víctor Estrada).There
were 32 at Cabo Roncudo, Galicia on 18.10 (Teresa Montràs, Jordi
Martí Aledo).There were 15 birds 0,5 miles off El Abra, Bilbao on
21.10(Gorka Ocio). At Rota, Cádiz there were several on 25.10 amongst
them a MEDITERRANEAN (Yelkouan) SHEARWATER
Puffinus
yelkouan being this the first recent Atlantic report for
this species in S Spain (Daniel L Huertas).On 5.10 there were 15 mauretanicus
off Santoña (Javier Cruz, Fernando Arce) On 26.10 13 were seen in
a seawatch off Santoña, Cantabria (SEO/Cantabria; Fernando Arce).
Data from Tarifa: passage of birds into the Mediterranean noted daily from
2nd-14th October with these quantities: 30 ind. 2.10, 20 ind. 3.10, 50+
on 4.10, 20 on 13.10 and 20 on 14.10 (Ian Kinley et al). Great
White Egret Egretta alba. There were 3 on 2.10 (Joaquim Vilagran)
and oneon 3.10 (Alfons Delgado) at Sils, Girona . On 1.10 (Daniel L Huertas)
and 2.10 there two at Isla Mayor, Entremuros, Sevilla (John & Rebecca
Butler)There was one at Aiguasvivas river, Azaila, Teruel on 5.10 (F.Javier
Moreno). There was one at Santa Pola saltpans, Alacant on 5.10 (Elías
Gomis). One was seen flying north c.3-4 miles offshore from Punta de la
Mora, Tarragona on 9.10 (R.Gutiérrez, E.Guinart). Another was at
Sils, Girona, on 8.10 (Joaquim Carol).On 9.10 there was one at S'Albufera
de Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Pere Vicens). On 11.10 there was one at
Entremuros, Isla Mayor, Sevilla (John Butler, Carin Landa).There were at
least two neat El Goleró, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 16.10
(F.López, R.Gutiérrez)One was seen at Los Canchales reservoir,
Mérida on 18.10 (Juan Antonio García Jiménez). On
16.10 a bird was seen at casas de Hito lagoon, Cáceres (Alfonso
López).On 13.10 there were 5 at Ejea de los Caballeros ricefields,
Zaragoza (Javier Capalvo Campo).There were several (+6) at Buda island,
Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 23.10 (E.Guinart, R.Gutiérrez).There
were 2 on 21.10 and 4 at S'Albufera de Mallorca on 23.10 (Pere Vicens).
On 23.10 there was one at la Marjaleria de Castelló, Castelló
de la Plana (Miguel Tirado Bernat).There was one at Algaida saltpans, Cadiz
on 6.10 (Ian Kinley). There was one at Pals ricefields, Girona on 25.10
(Miguel Ángel Domingo).On 29.19 there was one at embalse de Arrocampo-Almaraz,
Cáceres (Alfonso López).
Saddle-billed Stork Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis. Unknown origin but probable escape The adult of this species first seen on 22.9 (see september page for a photo) was seen again at Sanlúcar la Mayor, Sevilla on 6.10 (Daniel L Huertas). Glossy
Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. There were 440 + 590 = 1030 birds
(!!!!) at Brazo del Este, Sevilla on 5.10, the largest group ever recorded
in Spain (Daniel L Huertas).There were 4 at S'Albufera de Mallorca, Balearic
Islands, on 9.10 (Pere Vicens).On 23.10 there were 112 at Buda Island,
Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Emma Guinart, Ricard Gutiérrez). On
25.10 one was at Filipines marsh, Delta del Llobregat (R.Gutiérrez.
P.Symens et al).On 23.10 there were +1200 (Spanish record) at Isla Menor,
Sevilla (Daniel L Huertas, P.Chiclana, M.Martín, J.Salcedo).On 23.10
there was one at Desembocadura del Guadalhorce, Málaga (Antonio
Tamayo).
Mute Swan Cygnus olor. A 1st winter (different from the bird present in the delta since early 2003) was seen at la Vidala, Remolar-Filipines reserve, Llobregat delta on 17.10, only a day after the arrival of the first six overwintgering Greylag Geese (Anser anser) (Ricard Gutiérrez). Interestingly, on 16-19.10 an adult had arrived to S'Albufera de Mallorca Natural Park, Mallorca, Balearic Islands, when it was seen at camí dels Polls area (Maties Rebassa; Lalo Ventoso). See a photo below. These birds could well be of central-european procedence given the simultaneous arrival with flocks of Greylag Geese all over the country (ed.comment).The adult resident bird of Llobregat delta (different from the above bird) was seen again on 31.10 at cal Tet lagoon, Llobregat delta, in company of the also reesident Black Swan Cygnus atratus (R.Gutiérrez, F.X.Santaeufemia)

GooseAnser albifrons . There were 3 Greenlands flavirostris
(two
adults and a juvenile) at Ortigueira, Coaña, Asturies, on 6.10 (Xurde
Gayol).Still there on 11.10 (Gilberto S Jardón) but left on 22.10
(Xurde Gayol). There are photos
available in this page (opens in another window)One adult bird (ssp
albifrons)
was seen at Pozón de la Dolores, Camargo, Cantabria on 19.10 together
with 21 Greylags (A.anser)(Máximo Sánchez Cobo). Still
there on 26.10 (F.Arce).There were 3 at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca on
26.10 (Gabriel Martín, F.Javier de la Cruz, SEO/Salamanca, M.ROuco,
JJ Ramos Encalado...).On 30.10 there were an adult and a 1st winter at
Isla Menor, Sevilla within a flock of 2000 Greylags (Alfonso Barragán).On
30.10 too a bird was at Santoña marshes, Cantabria (Karmelo de Dios).
Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea. Three birds,two females and a male were seen flying over Cantarita, Sevilla marshes, Doñana on 11.10 (Manolo Villaécija, Javier Salcedo, José Manuel Reyes). See a photo below (© José Manuel Reyes).Seen again on 20.10 at Los Llanos (John Butler) and 23.10 at Isla Menor, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana, Mario Martín). There was one at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca on 18.10 (Ignacio Torres).It was still there on 26.10 (Gabriel Martín, FJ de la Cruz, SEO/Salamanca).
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca. There were 2 males at EL Portil lagoon. Huelva on 19.10 (John Butler). On 21.10 there was a male at Canal Vell lagoon. Ebre delta, Tarragona (Sergi Sales).There was a pair at Embalse de Santomera, Murcia, on 19.10 (Miguel Angel Núñez)There were 3, two adult males and a 1st winter female at Canal Vell lagoon, Delta de l'Ebre, on 29.10 (David Bigas) Scaup
Aythya
marila. Two were seen at canal de Treto, Santoña, Cantabria
on 25.10 (Juan Gómez Navedo y Jaime Quintana) Eider Somateria mollissima. One female was present at Zeluán, Asturies on 1.10 (Daniel López). This bird has rested in the area since May without interruption. Long-tailed
Duck Clangula hyemalis. One was seen flying S amongst 50 Common
Scoters (Melanitta nigra) from Cabo Silleiro, Baiona, Pontevedra,
on 17.10 (César Vidal).There was a male on 22-25.10 at Txingudi,
Gipuzkoa (MIkel Etxaniz; Jon Mujika; M.Fatuarte, D.Calleja, M.A.López
de Armentia, M.Guereñu, A.Herrero). This is the 2nd-ever record
for Gipuzkoa, the previous a female in march 1989! (Gorka Gorospe in
litt) White-headed
Duck Oxyura leucocephala On 20.10 there was a male at Canal
Vell lagoonm, Ebre Delta, Tarragona (Sergi Sales).
This species is a rarity in Catalonia and far from being recorded every
year.
Corncrake
Crex
crex On 27.10 afternoon, a bird was found in one street of Alicante
town. It was brought to the recovery center but it died that night (Elias
Gomis com.pers.). Crested Coot Fulica cristata. There were 3 at Marismas del Odiel, Huelva on 13.10 (John Butler). Also three remained at Remolar-Filipines reserve from 11-31.10 at least: 03U, WC and UA (R.Gutiérrez, A.Ramal; F.López). Coot U6 that had been 'lost' since june, returned to Remolar-Filipines reserve, Llobregat delta, on 19.10 (Ferran López). Dotterel

morinellus. On 7.10 there was a group of 18 in the same Almeria location
where initially seen on late August. On 9.10 there were nine (Raimundo
Martin Rodriguez).On 17.10 a bird, presumably a juvenile/1w, was seen at
rio Vélez river mouth, Málaga (Samuel Peregrina).On 19.10
there were 3 at Arcediano, Salamanca within a flock of 60 Lapwings
Vanellus
vanellus and another at Fuentesaúco, Zamora the same da y (Juan
José Ramos Encalado)
Temminck's
Stint Calidris temminckii. There was a juvenile on 10.10 at
estany d'Europa, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (J.Martí
Aledo, Teresa Montràs).On 20.10 there were 11 altogether with 3
C.minuta
at Riet Vell reserve, Ebre delta, Tarragona (Jamie Durrant).There were
7 at Isla Menor, Sevilla, on 8.10 (Ian Kinley et al).
Marsh
Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis. There were 2 at Azud de Riolobos,
Salamanca on 16.10 (G.Hernández, M.A.García Matellanes, J.J.Ramos
Encalado).Still one on 27.10 (G.Martín, C.Sánchez, F.J. de
la Cruz).
Sabine's Gull Larus sabini. On 3.10 c.20 birds were seen from Punta de la Vaca, Asturies (Elias García Sánchez).On 17.10 afternoon, one 1st winter was found in a meadow near Verdicio, Gozón. It was injured carrying hooks both in bill and legs. Once recovered the same afternoon, it is released and flies perfectly (Manuel Quintana Becerra).On 24.10 two were seen from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña and on 25.10 another one passed off the same location (Antonio Sandoval) Caspian
tern Sterna caspia. There was one at Marismas del Odiel, Huelva
on 13.10 (John Butler).There were 4 at Guadalhorce river mouth, Málaga
on 26.10 (Blas López). There were 1 at Los Lances, Tarifa on 1.10
and 6 at Bonanza, Cádiz on 6.10 (Ian Kinley et al).
Lesser
Crested Tern Sterna bengalensis. There were 2 moving west on
4.10 at Gibraltar (Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society).There
were 2 off Calaburras lighthouse, Mijas, Málaga on 18.10 (Paco Rios).
Four more were seen on 26.10 at the same place (Paco Rios).
Pied
Wagtail Motacilla alba yarrellii. There was one on 1.10 in an
irrigation pond 10 km off Vitoria, Alava. It was rather hurt (Julia Knorr).

Dupont factory, valle de Tamón, Carreño, Asturies (Clemente
Álvarez). One had been seen in Bañugues, Asturies on 29.9
(Elias García) and it was believed to be the first of the autumn.
There was a male at playa de la Arena, Muskiz, Bizkaia on 24.10 (Juan Manuel
Pérez de Ana).
Red-throated
Pipit Anthus cervinus. One was seen at Els Reguerons, Viladecans,
Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 21.10 (Xavier Larruy Brusi)
Snow
Bunting Plectrophenax nivalis. A bird was seen at punta Frouxeira,
Valdoviño, A Coruña on 31.10 (Antonio Fernández)
