Shearwater* Puffinus assimilis Two
records (1)On the Pride of Bilbao ferry from Santurtzi to Portsmouth,
a bird was seen at c.120 miles from Bilbao on 8.9 under severe gale conditions,
a fact that caused that only two lucky observers (e.g. from 58 Spanish
birders) could see this bird (Gorka Ocio, Alfonso Rodrigo). Later on the
trip, another was seen near Brest, in French waters (Ferran López)(2)

BROWN
BOOBY* Sula leucogaster Fourth FOR SPAIN . One
record

by snail mail) A bird was seen from Estaca de Bares, Mañón,
A Coruña, Galivia on 10.9 at 500 m from the coast flying W (Antonio
Sandoval). Last year another Brown booby was found dead amongst casualties
of the Prestige tanker. There is a photo of that
2002 bird here. |

stellaris. Extralimital record. A
bird was seen on 20.9 at rio Vélez, Málaga (Samuel Peregrina).
There have been only 5 records in Málaga in the last 10 years (S.Peregrina
com.pers.).
Great
White Egret Egretta alba. . There were 2 at Entremuros, Sevilla,
on 2.9 (John Butler). One was at S'Albufera de Mallorca on 1.9 (Pere Vicens).There
was one at Salinas de Bonanza, Cádiz on 6.9 (JM Reyes et al).There
was still a bird at S'Albufera, Mallorca on 8.9 (Pere Vicens).There was
a bird at Bedua, ria de Uriola, Gipuzkoa on 14.9 (Aitor Leiza).There were
2 at S'Albufera de Mallorca, Balearic Islands on 19.9 (Maties Rebassa).
On 20.9 there was one at Los Canchales reservoir, Mérida, Extremadura
(Juan Antonio García Jiménez).On 21.9 there were 2 at Entremuros
del Guadiamar, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana)On 28.9 two were seen at Filpines
marsh, Llobregat delta, Barcelona (F.López, R.Gutiérrez et
al). The 14.9 a bird was seen flying over Hondarribia airport, then flying
over Plaiaundi to Bidasoa Islands, Gipuzkoa (David Calleja Marcos, Mikel
Guerelu Clemente). There
was one on 19.9 at S'Albufera de Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Stephan Cramer
and Eks Feuth). From 16-29 there was a bird at Pals ricefields, Girona

Unknown origin but probable escape (but from where?). First ever record
for Spain in the wild. An adult of this species
was first seen by 22.9 at Sanlucar la Mayor, Sevilla (Celia Hernández).

Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. There were 84 at Marmoleja, Isla
Menor, Sevilla on 3.9 (John Butler).There were c.1000 birds (!) at Isla
Menor, Sevilla between 19-22.9 (DLA109@telefonica.net)At least 500 in the
same place on 24.9 (Daniel L Huertas, Rafael Romero). There were 2 at La
Janda, Cádiz on 19.9 (Paul Willoughby)On 28.9 one was seen at Llobregat
delta, Barcelona (F.López, R.Gutiérrez et al).On 24.9 there

In the middle of the arrival of many Pectoral Sandpipers, the Brown Booby
at Galicia and other nearctic birds to Europe, a wild-behaving bird was
seen at Salada Grande de Alcañiz, Teruel on 15.9 (Fco.Javier Moreno).

2) The bird seen in May around the
Straits of Gibraltar and brought to the Jerez Zoo and released with a radiotransmitter
into the wild on 10.7 and lost by 30.7 was seen again on 3.9 (Paco Montoya/COCN).
There seem to be 2 Ruppells now inthe straits area (José Luis Copete).(2)
A 2nd immature bird was seen at Algarrobo watching point, Tarifa, Cádiz,
on 13.9 (Rafael Romero, David González Ortega, Paco Chiclana). This
bird seems to have been the days before preying on a dead bull nearby with
Griffon Vultures, e.g. on 12.9 (Federico Roviralta). |
Long-legged
Buzzard/ Steppe Buzzard* Buteo rufinus/ B.buteo vulpinus (1/1 ,
2 )
One rufinus was reported from La Janda area, Cádiz, near
a canal closed to the road to Zahara de los Atunes on 21.9 (Jorge Garzón).However,
there is a substantiated claim from La Janda on 19.9 of a Steppe Buzzard
(B.buteo vulpinus) (Paul Willoughby) which makes us think that both
birds can be the same .On 6.9 a bird was seen in the same are and it has
been submitted by snail mail to the CR/SEO as Steppe Buzzard (Andy Paterson)
thus certainly being possibly the same 19.9 and why not the 21.9 bird too
being all the same

observatory at Tarifa, Cádiz on 23.9 (J.Ramirez, M.Lobón,
F.Romero, J.de la Cruz et al).Also on 24-25.9 (Alfonso López López).

Red-Footed
Falcon Falco vespertinus. There were two on migration at Guardia
Pilosa, near Sant Marti Sesgueioles, 5 km S of Calaf, Barcelona on 23.9
(Alex Ollé).There was one at Lindus, Navarra on 20-21.9 (Sergio
de Juan).There was one male at L'Albufera de València, València
on 24.9(Stephan Cramer and Els Feuth).On 23.9 there were 2 at Sant Guim
de Freixenet, Lleida possibly being the same two reported S of Calaf the
same day (Xavier Larruy).
Eleonora's
Falcon Falco eleonorae. Only mainland
Spain records to be published. On 20.9 there
was a dark phase bird at Montcada peak, Barcelona (X.Macià, X.Larruy).
On 29.9 there was a pale phase hunting at Sant Guim de Freixenet, Lleida
(Xavier Larruy).

Coot Fulica cristata. Late news: One of the birds released in
the Llobregat delta in april was seen on 3.8 at Turia river mouth, Valencia,
after the severe drought affecting Catalonia (Pedro A. del Baño
Moreno)At Medina lagoon, Cádiz, there were 7 birds on 15.9 amongst
thousands of Common Coots (Paco Chiclana).At the same place, there were
5 on 21.9 (Jorge Garzón).

morinellus. On 1.9 there were 14 birds at Alfés, Lleida (Enric
Farré). On 1.9 there were 8 at Puigmal peak, Girona (Emmanuel Roy).
Near Albacete there were the following groups: 14 on 1.9 at Cueva del Yegüero,
Casas de Juan Núñez (M.López, B.Campos), 8 at El Hoyo,
Pétrola on 2.9 (C.Cifuentes, D.Cañizares); 5 near Vertedero
de Albacete on 2.9 (C.Cifuentes, D.Cañizares).There were 2 juveniles
at Los Lances beach, Cádiz on 20.9 (M.Villaécija, L.Morales,
C.Segovia, E.Alés & P.Chichala). There were 3 juveniles near
casa del Alcaide, Albacete on 14.9 (Cristina Cifuentes, David Cañizares).On
20-9 there were 7 near Rambla Morales, Almería and on 22.9 there
were 25 (!) c.30 meters from the 20.9 location (Raimundo Martín).There
were 9 at the same place on 24.9 (Gabriel Martín García).

One bird was seen following a fishing boat 1 nautical mile off Castro Urdiales,
Cantabria (Gorka Ocio).There were 29 birds at Sant Antoni saltpans, Delta
de l'Ebre, Tarragona, on 6.9 (Marc Peris). There was one on 17.9 at S'Albufera
de Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Stephan Cramer and Eks Feuth). On 27.9 there
were 21 altogether at Salines de Sant Antoni, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona
(Xavier Larruy).

Tern Sterna bengalensis. On 21.9 a bird was seen flying E from
Gibraltar (Ernest FJ Garcia, pers.com.)On 21.9 a bird was seen off playa
de los Lances, Cádiz (Jorge Garzón).

record. 3rd record for Navarra: two birds
were seen at Balsa de Zolina, Aranguren, Navarra, on 9.9 (Gorka Gorospe).
White-winged
Black Tern Chlidonias leucopterus. One adult was at the same
place that the River Warbler at Pontevedra on 4.9 (César Vidal).

At Ensenada de Esteiro, Mañón, A Coruña, ther was
a bird on 6.9 (Antonio Sandoval, Ana Torres Jack).One was at Málaga,
at río Vélez on 6.9 (Samuel Peregrina).
Icterine
warbler Hippolais icterina. On 4.9 there was a bird at Ferrol,
A Coruña (Pablo Gutiérrez). Late august records are those
of birds on 28.8 at estany d'Europa, PN Aiguamolls, Girona (Lluís
Gustamante) and 29.8 (two at Ter Vell, L'Estartit, Girona) (Lluís
Gustamante). On 6.9 an EURING 3- was ringed at Canal Vell biological station,
PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (S.Sales, N.Rodriguez).
Lesser
Whitethroat Sylvia curruca. There were at least two birds on
6.9 at Peñausende, Zamora (Juan José Ramos Encalado).On 22.9
there was one of the ssp minula at Dehesa de Abajo, Puebla del Rio,
Sevilla (John Butler, John Harrison, Robert Sheldon).Interestingly, on
21.9 one had been ringed at Gibraltar being the 3rd record for the area
(Ernest FJ Garcia pers.com.) On
25.9 one was ringed at Llobregat Delta Nature Reserves, at Filpines marsh
