Recent Reports: Latest sightings MAY 2003
Balearic
Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus and Mediterranean ShearwaterP.yelkouan.
On
1.5 in 3 hours of observation there were 27 flying N off Benicàssim,
Castelló (Miguel Tirado).There were 50 off cape Formentor, Mallorca
on 5.5 (Axel Halley). There were +300 off Sant Telm, Mallorca on 7.5 (Colin
& Arne Tolker) also a Mediterranean Shearwater erroneously told by
a Manx. About 30 yelkouan and 40 mauretanicus were counted
off Cap de Creus on 7.5 (Pablo García, Ponç Feliu) On 12.5
there were 57 mauretanicus and 20 yelkouan off Cap de Creus,
Girona (Ponç Feliu). On 14.5 there were c.90 mauretanicus
seen feeding offshore in an hour of observation off platja Llarga, Tarragona
(R.Gutiérrez, FX Santaeufemia). There had been 700 mauretanicus
off
Tarragona harbour on 12.5 (Albert Cama).On 25.5 there were 345 off Benicàssim,
Castelló (Miguel Tirado). According to Generalitat de Catalunya
sea-fishing wardens, this May the sardine captures off the coast of Barcelona
are extremely good. On 30.5 in a 5 h seawatch off Garraf and Llobregat
delta, there were over 220 birds in 24+flocks, the larger of them a raft
of 120 birds. Only one Mediterranean Shearwater was seen. There were also
11 Storm-Petrels Hydrobates pelagicus
in the same area, the closest,
1,8 nm offshore (R.Gutiérrez, F.López, F.X.Santaeufemia).
Great
White Egret Egretta alba. On 1.5 there was one at Albufereta
de Pollença, Mallorca (Maties Rebassa). The same day there was one
at Lucio del Lobo, Doñana, Sevilla (Alfonso López). The Lucio
del Lobo bird was still there on 4.5 (John Butler, Sinclair and Nitta Budd,
Doug& Jennifer Atchinson; Daniel L Huertas ).On 3.5 there was one at
Matà ricefields, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (Jordi
Clavell, L.Gustamante, N.Gallardo; A.Bastien, S.Durand, E.Durand).There
has been one the 1st week of may at laguna de Pitillas, Navarra (Ostadar
SL).There were 2 at Maresma de les Filipines, Llobregat delta, Barcelona
on 9.5 (F.López) and 3 on 10.5 (Antonio Rodriguez).There was one
on 14.5 at Marjaleria de Castelló, Castelló de la Plana (Miguel
Tirado).There were 2 at Brazo del Este, Sevilla on 22.5 (Paco Chiclana).
There was one in full breeding plumage at Dehesa de Abajo, Doñana,
Sevilla on 15.5 (John Butler, Mutai Hashimoto).One was seen flying over
Platja dels Militars, Delta del Llobregat, Barcelona, on 28.5 (Pau Esteban,
Enric de Roa, Ferran González).
Glossy
Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. On 3.5 there was one at el Matà
area, PN Aiguamolls, Girona (Ignacio Torres; A.Bastien, S.Durand, E.Durand).At
La Mancha area, at Miguel Esteban ponds, there was one on 17.5 (Mario Rodero,
Delfín González, Gabriel Martín). Still there by 31.5
(Gabriel Martín)
Mute Swan Cygnus olor. The bird that overwintered in the Llobregat delta was at Cal Tet lagoon, El Prat de Llobregat, from 2.5 (F.López, A.Ramal, R.Gutiérrez) to 16.5 at least (Ferran González).From 16.5 (Jordi Sala) to 26.5 at least it moved again to Remolar-Filipines reserve (Pedro Bescós). Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis. There was a bird at Pla de Mas Gelabert ricefields, Pals, Girona on 11.5.2003. Record submited to CAC (Catalan Avifauna Committee since a rarity in Catalonia but not in the whole of Spain). (Olga Díaz and Miguel Ángel Domingo).This bird looks suspicious according to PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà bird-recorders due to long-staying in the area and unusual behaviour. Ruddy
Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea. On 1.5 there was one at Azud de
Riolobos, Salamanca (M.Rouco, J. de la Cruz, A.Rodrigo). Still there on
8.5 (Javier Valls, JM Palacios, M Rouco, J de la Cruz)and 10.5 (Ignacio
Torres).There were two at Villafáfila, Zamora on 14.5 (Alfonso Rodrigo).
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca. On 6.5 there was a male at laguna del Portil, Huelva (John Butler, Andy and Jan Shand, Steve and Megan Lister).There were 3 at Fuentedepiedra, Málaga on 14.5 (Mike Clarke). Eider
Somateria
mollissima. On 1.5 there were 5 birds off l'Alfacada lagoon, Ebre delta,
Tarragona (Alex Ollé, Toni Mampel, Francesc Macia, P.Serrano, M.Llobet).There
was one young/female off Aiguamolls de l'Empordà coast, Girona on
3.5 (Pedro Bescós).
Black Vulture Aegypius monachus. Extralimital record. There was a bird over monte El Buciero, Santoña, Cantabria being the first record of this species for this N Spain coast wetland reserve (Jaime Quintana, Juanjo Aja).On 25.5 there was a subadult flying NW over Cabanes, Castelló (Vicente Esteller). Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus. On 1.5, the first this year for Lleida, a male, arrived to Bellcaire, where it was seen on a arable field (Jordi Bas). See a thumbnail here. On 5.5 there were 2 males at Belianes steppes, Lleida (Juan Bécares).One of those still was visible on 8.5 (J.Becares, M.Raurell, G.Bota).On 8.5 there was a 1st summer male at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca (Javier Valls, JM Palacios, M Rouco, J de la Cruz).At Lleida, there was a male at secà de Belianes on 7.5 (Juan Bécares) and a pair near la Pobla de Claravalls (David Guixé), also on 7.5On 9.5 there was a female at Alfés steppes (Gerard Bota). On 10.5 there were seven at Belianes steppes, Lleida (J.Jofre, X.Larruy, J.Bécares, A.López, H.Kokko).The bird at Azud de Riolobos was still there on 9.5 (M.Rouco, J.de la Cruz, A.Rodrigo).There is a photo of this bird here (opens in another window, © Miguel Rouco). At Mallorca, there were 3 at Prat de Sant Jordi on 10.5 (Lalo Ventoso).On 11.5 there were 3 at Felanitx, Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Joan Riera) and one on 12.5 (Jaume Binimelis).There were 5 at Ses Salines, Mallorca on 11.5 (Arne & Colin Torkler).Late news: on 3.5 there was one at Alfés, Lleida (Alfons Delgado).On 12.5 three birds were seen migrating over Cap de Creus, Girona (Ponç Feliu).The bird reported at Azud de Riolobos on 9.5 was still there on 10.5 (Ignacio Torres).At Belianes, Lleida, there were two on 17.5 (Pablo Pascual García) and three on 18.5 (Martí Rodriguez). There was one male well inland, in Madrid, in a urban area called 'Sanchinarro', N of Madrid on 18.5 (Alejandro González, Arancha González & Delfín González). On 17.5 there were two, a 2nd year male and a female at Belianes, Lleida. On 28.5 a large number of birds was recorded at Lleida steppes: 18 birds at Belianes (M.Raurell, G.Bota, J.Bécares) & 3 at secà de Bellmunt (M.Raurell, G.Bota, J.Bécares), also present the day before. At Girona province, on 25.5 there were 3 at ermita de Cassà de la Selva (P.Gómez).On 26.5 there was a male at Fornells de la Selva (Joaquim Vilagran). The same day, a female, c.500 m from the previous bird at Mas Serinyà, Campllong (J.Vilagran).There appear to have been seen two at Llobregat delta, Barcelona the week of 26-31.5 (pers.com. to F.López). Spotted Crake Porzana porzana. There was one at Estany d'Europa, PN Aiguamolls on 3.5 (A.Bastien, S.Durand, E.Durand). Crested Coot Fulica cristata. The 20 individuals reintroduced at Maresma de les Filipines, Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 1.4 are now paired and searching for breeding territories (R.Gutiérrez). On 4.5 there were 2 at Dehesa de Abajo, Sevilla and 3 at Lucio del Lobo, Sevilla plus 2 more at Caño Guadiamar (John Butler, Sinclair and Nitta Budd, Doug& Jennifer Atchinson; Daniel L Huertas ).There were 4 one collar-ringed, at laguna de Medina, Cádiz on 7.5 (Greg McIvor).There were 2 at Lucio de la Rianzuela, Sevilla and 1 at Caño Guadiamar, Sevilla on 17-18.5 (Daniel L Huertas). Another at Cañó Guadiamar on 31.5 had a chick with it (D.L.Huertas, Guadalupe Moreno). Red Knot Calidris canutus. Exceptional inland number. Birds inland at La Mancha: there was a flock of 10 birds at laguna de Alcazar de San Juan, Ciudad Real plus two more at laguna Grande de Lillo, Toledo and two more, totalling all in all 14 at laguna chica de Lillo, Toledo, all on 9.5 (Gabriel Martín García and Manuel M. Araujo).More birds inland: 3 at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca on 10.5 (Ignacio Torres) and 2 at Boada de Campos the same day (Ignacio Torres).There were 5 at Villafáfila, Zamora on 18.5 (Isabel Martín, Afredo Hernández).Another was at La Mancha, at laguna de Alcazar de San Juan, Ciudad Real on 17.5 (Delfín González, Gabriel Martín, Mario Rodero) and from 16-19.5 in fact (Christopher Knox). Stint Calidris temminckii. On 3.5 there were 3 at Salobrar de
Campos, Mallorca (Maties Rebassa)On 1.5 there were 2+ at el Matà

R Armada; Ignacio Torres). On 3.5 there were two at estany d'Europa, PN
AIguamolls (A.Bastien, S.Durand, E.Durand; Ignacio Torres) and 3 at el
Matà (A.Bastien, S.Durand, E.Durand).There were 4 at caño
de Guadiamar, Aznalcázar, Sevilla on 4.5 (Daniel L Huertas).There
was one at Barcelona's airport works, Llobregat delta, on 6.5 and 8.5 (Aleix
Comas).There were 2 at estanys d'Europa area, PN Aiguamolls, Girona on
10.5 (Alex Ollé, Xesco Macià, Marc Llobet; Nicolas Valet).At
Llobregat delta, there was one at cal Roc, El Prat de Llobregat on 7.5
(X.Larruy).There were 2 at marismas del Rocío, Hinojos,Huelva on
7.5 (John Butler, Frederic, Marie-Paule and Cristophe Hildebrand).There
was one at Prat de Sant Jordi, Mallorca on 20.5 (Lalo Ventoso). On 16.5
there was one at RN Ricarda ca l'Arana, El Prat de Llobregat, Llobregat
delta, Barcelona (Ferran González Prat).There were 10 on 17.5 and
6 on 20.5 at Fuentedepiedra, Málaga (Andy Paterson; Mike Clarke).
There were 3 at Tordera river mouth, Blanes, on 18.5 (Miguel Angel Domingo).There
was one at Eivissa Saltpans, Illes Balears on 17-18.5 (Alberto García).On
20.5 there was one at Prat de Sant Jordi, Mallorca (Lalo Ventoso).On 18.5
there were 2 at La Tancada saltpans, Ebre delta, Tarragona (Jarone Pinhassi).From
16-19.5 there was one near Laguna de Alcazar de San Juan, Ciudad Real (Christopher
Knox).
Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis. On 2.5 there was one at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca (Gabriel Martín, Manuel M Araujo). On 4.5 there was one at laguna de la Veguilla, Alcazar de San Juan, Ciudad Real (J.Carlos Marín Santos).On 3.5 there was one at Platera del Ter, near river mouth, Torroella de Montgrí-L'Estartit, Girona (J.Clavell et al). This bird had been reported previously by D.Burgas et al. The same day there was another at estany d'Europa, PN Aiguamolls, Girona (Ignacio Torres; A.Bastien, S.Durand, E.Durand).There were 2 at Ses Salines, Mallorca on 11.5 (Arne & Colin Torkler). Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus. Rarity in the Mediterranean coast. There were a pair adults male & female at Salines de la Trinitat, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona, on 4.5 (D.Bigas, F.Vidal, J.Gil). Caspian Tern Sterna caspia. On 1.5 there were 4 at Marismas del Odiel, Huelva (John Butler, Skip & Lyn Nelson).On 3.5 there was one at Matà ricefields, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (Jordi Clavell, L.Gustamante, N.Gallardo; Ignacio Torres; A.Bastien, S.Durand, E.Durand).At marismas del Odiel, Huelva, there were 3 on 6.5 (John Butler Andy and Jan Shand, Steve and Megan Lister).There was one bird at Maresma de les Filipines, Llobregat delta, Barcelona, on 16.5 (R.Gutiérrez, X.Larruy).On 18.5 there were 2 at La Tancada saltpans, Ebre delta, Tarragona (Jarone Pinhassi). On 2.5 there was one at Salobrar de Campos, Mallorca (Lalo Ventoso).An adult was seen at maresma de les Filipines, Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 6.5 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Lluís Ferreres Oncins; P.Bescós). Auk Alle alle. Unseasonal record: a bird in full summer plumage
was seen 50 m offshore Chipiona, Cádiz on 5.5, a very late and rare
record indeed (Greg McIvor).
White-rumped
Swift Apus caffer. One was seen at Bolonia, Cádiz, o
n 8.5 (Greg McIvor).There were two at Salto del Gitano and another near
Puente del Francés, Monfragüe, Cáceres on 17-18.5 (Juan
José Ramos Encalado;M.A. García Matellanes, Alfonso Rodrigo).There
were 4 at Sierra Morena, breeding in a disused mine shaf on 18.5 (Christopher
Knox).
Red-throated
pipit Anthus cervinus. On 3.5 there was one singing at La Nava,
Palencia. See photo below (Miguel Rouco).On 5.5 there was one at estanys
del Matà area, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (J.Martí
Aledo i T.Montràs), this is the 5th for the Park this year.There
was one at Ses Salines, Mallorca on 11.5 (Arne & Colin Torkler).One
at La Nava on 10.5 (I.Torres, M.Rouco).
Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola. On 18.5 there was one at Casa de Bombas, Brazo de la Torre, Sevilla (John Butler, Michael & Sue Spencer). Icterine
Warbler Hippolais icterina. 16
records so far, all from NE Spain but for one from Alacant. A
bird was ringed at Canal Vell biological station, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona,
on 4.5 (Sergi Sales, Albert Burgas, N.Rodriguez).On 7.5 three were trapped
and ringed at maresma de les Filipines, Viladecans, Llobregat delta, Barcelona
(Quim Bach, Ferran López).On 8.5 one was seen nearby, within Barcelona's
airport works area, El Prat de Llobregat (Aleix Comas) and on 9.5 four
were trapped and ringed at maresma de les Filipines (Joan Castelló
et
al).
Long-tailed Tit Aegithalos caudatus. Range expansion. On 5.5 a family of these birds (8+ birds, some feeding others -chicks probably-) were seen at Puigpunyent area, Mallorca (Manolo Suárez). This could be an evidence of colonisation of this island. Balearic
Woodchat Shrike Lanius senator badius. Mainland
record, where local rarity. An Euring 5 female
was trapped and ringed at Canal Vell biological station, Delta de l'Ebre,
Tarragona on 5.5 (Sergi Sales, David Bigas). In previous days, a female
had been reported on 29.4 at Platja de Mitjorn, Delta de l'Erbre (Daniela
& Detlef Gruber).Late news:. There was one at Llobregat delta, Barcelona
on (Raphael Lebrun). This record has been submitted to the Catalonia Avifauna
Committee since it is a rarity for this area. You
