Recent Reports: Latest sightings APRIL 2003
Balearic
Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus and Mediterranean ShearwaterP.yelkouan.
On
31.3 a rather strong passage of birds was noted from Cabo de Palos, Cartagena,
Murcia recording c.277 birds/30 minutes bewteen 17-18:30 hours and flocks
between 1-36 birds (Antonio Fernández-Caro, Antonio Hernández).At
Cap de Creus, on 7.4 with severe & strong N wind, over 50 birds were
seen on passage. At the same area, there were 110 Mediterranean Shearwaters
Puffinus
yelkouan (Pablo García, Ponç Feliu, Toni Llobet). On
10.4 there were 21 birds flying S off Castelló harbour (Miguel Tirado).
51 birds were counted passing in front of Cap de Creus, Girona on 14.4
together with 84 Mediterranean Shearwaters P.yelkouan (Pablo García,
Ponç Feliu).On 24.4 14 mauretanicus were counted flying S
in 5 hours observation period off Salou, Tarragona (Pere Josa, Albert Cama).
There were 6 off Llobregat delta on 20.4 (Raphael Lebrun, Eva Andreu).
There were over 15 off Garraf and Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 30.4 (FX
Santaeufemia, A.Ramal & R.Gutiérrez).
Great
White Egret Egretta alba. There were four at Filipines marsh,
Llobregat delta on 10.4 (Pedro Bescós; F.López) but none
on 11.4 (F.López, R.Gutiérrez). At laguna del Hito, Cuenca,
there were 2 on 5.4 (Tim Robinson). On 7.4 there were 2 at Sils ponds,
Girona (P.Hospital).On 8.4 there was one at Valdoviño, A Coruña,
Galicia (Pablo Gutiérrez)There were 2 at Vuelta de la Arena, Doñana,
Sevilla/Huelva, on 17.4 (Jorge Garzón). There was one at Parque
de Salburua, Vitoria-Gasteiz on 21.4 (Begoña Valcarcel, Cristina
Negueruela, Sergio de Juan)There was one at Vilaut, PN Aiguamolls, Girona
on 17.4 (Jérôme Bailly).There were 2 at l'Encanyissada, Ebre
delta on 21.4 and 3 at El Garxal, Ebre delta, Tarragona on 21.4 too (Raphael
Lebrun, Eva Andreu). There were 3 flying over Cap de Creus, Girona, on
21.4 (Oriol Clarabuch). There was one at Cancela de la Escupidera, Doñana,
Huelva-Sevilla, on 23.4 (Luis Aleixos Alapont).
Glossy
Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. There were hundreds of breeding birds
at Cerrado Garrido (Centro de Información J.A. Valverde) area at
Doñana, Sevilla from 14-18.4 and afterwards (R.Gutiérrez
et
al; J.Garzón et al; J.Figuerola pers.com.). This
is the largest colony in Spain. See a thumbnail here.On
15.4 there was one at Balsa del Pulger, Navarra (Dirk Bogaert, Gorka Gorospe)
where the species is very rare.Another bird was at Embalse de las Cañas,
Biana, Navarra from 17.4 (Ostadar/Emb.las Cañas staff; Javier Robres)
to 28.4 at least (Javier Robres).)There were 3 at El Matà, PN Aiguamolls,
Girona on 15-16.4 (Emmanuel Roy) and still there on 19.4 (P.Feliu et
al).There were 11 at Tancada saltpans, Ebre delta, Tarragona on 21.4
(Raphael Lebrun, Eva Andreu). The species is breeding again at Ebre delta
in small numbers (David Bigas/PNDE).
Scaup Aythya marila. A male reported previously was seen again on 23.4 at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca (Miguel Rouco, Javier de la Cruz). Eider Somateria mollissima. There was one at Cambrils harbour, Tarragona, on 1.4 (Pere Josa). There was one at PN Aiguamolls, Girona on 19.4 (P.Feliu et al). Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis. The bird reported in previous months as present at Rambla Morales, Almeria, was still present around 15.4 (Raimundo Martín).Gone by 27.4 (Raimundo Martín). Black
Vulture Aegypius monachus. Extralimital
record. A subadult was seen in the main Pyrenean
axis, at Estana, Cerdanya county, Catalonia, on 5.4. It was seen flying
towards the W, the Lleida Prepyrenees (Marc Gálvez, Miquel Trias).Another
extralimital record: a bird was seen with Griffons at Izki, Álava
on 26.4 (Unai Garita).
Spanish Imperial Eagle Aquila adalberti. Extralimital record. In a supressed place between Alta Ribagorça and Pallars Jussà counties, Lleida, Catalonia, well into the E Pyrenees, a 1st w individual was seen trying to kleptoparasite a Lammergeier (Gypaetus barbatus) that was carrying a prey on 5.4 (Antoni Margalida, Rafael Pelayo). Red-footed
Falcon Falco vespertinus. A female was at Vilaüt, PN Aiguamolls,
Girona, on 17.4 (Jérome Bailly, E.Roy).
Spotted
Crake Porzana porzana. There were at least 2 birds at Plaiaundi,
Txingudi, Gipuzkoa from 10.3 till 3.4 at least (Alberto Luengo, Mikel Etxaniz,
Chema Grandío, Leire Beteta, Félix Calvo). See a photo below
(Photo © Mikel Etxaniz). There was one at Vilaüt, PN Aiguamolls
de l'Empordà, Girona on 3.4 (Jordi Martí Aledo). At the same
park, there was one at estanys d'Europa on 5.4 (Marc Llobet, Francesc X.
Macià, Pere Serrano, Alex Ollé).There was one at Brazo del
Este, Sevilla on 10.4 (Paco Chiclana, Ricardo Martín-Baylo,
Fernando del Valle).There was one at Estany d'Europa, PN Aiguamolls, Girona
on 15-17.4 (Emmanuel Roy). One was heard singing all night long at PN Aiguamolls
on 19.4 (P.Feliu
et al). On 1.4 there was a bird at riu Sec mouth,
Castelló (Miguel Tirado).
Corncrake Crex crex. A bird was seen at Reguerons ZEPA, Llobregat delta, Barcelona, on 8.4 and 17.4 (X.Larruy) Crested
Coot Fulica cristata. 20 individuals were reintroduced at Maresma
de les Filipines, Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 1.4. All wearing white
PVC collars (RRN Delta del Llobregat). (See below, Photo © Ricard
Gutiérrez).All bird still there on 10.4 (R.Gutiérrez, F.López).3
nesting pairs of Crested Coots were observed near Caño de Guadiamar,
Aznalcazar, Sevilla on 4.4. The Crested Coot nest at Dehesa de Abajo has
been completely swamped by flood-water and the birds appear to have deserted
the area (John Butler).The Llobregat delta birds are now alone or in small
groups. 12 birds are still well visible from main hides (R.Gutiérrez,
F.López). At Marjal d'Almenara, Castelló, there was a bird
with PVC collar numbered W1 on 21.4 (José Vicente Ortiz). There
were four unringed birds at laguna de Medina, Cádiz on 15.4 (Jorge
Garzón). On 18.4 there were 3 pairs breeding at Lucio de Rianzuela-Dehesa
de Abajo, Doñana, Sevilla (Jorge Garzón, Ricard Gutiérrez).

by late april, wearing pvc collar (J.Garzón).There were 8 uncollared
birds at laguna de Medina, Cádiz on 3.4 and 3 uncollared birds at
Lucio del Lobo, Doñana, on 21.4 (Paco Chiclana). An uncollared bird
has been seen during most of April at laguna de Guialguerrero, near Gallocanta,
Zaragoza, well N of its usual range (E.Roy - Covadonga Gil de Vergara com.pers.).
Collared Pratincole Glareola pratincola.Extralimital record. 1st for Gipuzkoa, Euskadi: a bird was on 28.4 at Plaiaundi, Txingudi, Gipuzkoa, Euskadi (Txema Grandío). Dotterel Charadrius morinellus. There were 15 at steppes between Las Grañeras and Castrotierra de Valmadrigal, León, on 6.4 (Héctor Astiárraga and Soraya de Elera). On 6.4 there were 5 at Montealegre, Valladolid (Alejandro Torés).Late record: on 24.3 there were 75 BIRDS (!!) at Llano de las Piedras, Villarobledo, Albacete, perhaps one of the largest groups ever recorded in Spain (David Cañizares, Rubén Miñano).There were 7 birds within PN Doñana, Sevilla, on 22.4 (Paco Chiclana).There were 20 at Parameras de Blancas on 9.4, 18 at Campo de Visiedo on 11.4 and 1 at El Saso, Belchite, Zaragoza on 11.4 too (Emmanuel Roy). Temminck's
Stint Calidris temminckii. There was a bird at PN Aiguamolls
de l'Empordà, Girona, on 15.4 (E.Roy) and 2 on 17.4 (E.Roy, S.Durend;
Alex Ollé)and 20.4 (J.Luís Copete). There were 7 at estanys
del Matà, PN Aiguamolls, Girona on 23.4 (T.Montràs, J.Martí
Aledo). At Entremuros area, Isla Mayor, Sevilla there were 3 on 14.4 (John
Butler).There were 3 at Llobregat delta on 26.4: one at Filipines marsh,
Viladecans and 2 at cal Roc, El Prat de Llobregat (F.López, X.Larruy,
R.Gutiérrez, F.X.Santaeufemia). Maximum of 11 birds at PN Aiguamolls,
el Matà area, on 27.4 (J.Martí, T.Alonso).There was one at
Caño de la Vera, Los Palacios, Sevilla on 29.4 (Daniel L Huertas).
There were 3 birds the last week of April at riu Vinalopó, Alacant
(Luis Fidel Sarmiento, Elias Gomis).
Marsh
Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis. There was one at Salobrar de Campos,
Mallorca, on 5.4 (Maties Rebassa, Manolo Suárez).On 3.4 there were
one at estany del Matà and another at El Cortalet, PN Aiguamolls
de l'Empordà, Girona (Jordi Martí Aledo). On 5.4 there were
five at the same park: 2 at estanys d'Europa, 1 at el Cortalet, 1 at estany
del Tec and 1 at Vilaüt (Marc Llobet, Francesc X. Macià, Pere
Serrano, Alex Ollé)One was at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà
on 20.4 (José Luís Copete, Ferran López).There was
one at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca, on 23.4 (Miguel Rouco, Javier de la
Cruz).

Caspian
Tern Sterna caspia There was one bird on 4.4 at Maresma de les
Filipines, Llobregat delta, Barcelona (R.Gutiérrez) and four on

here. A bird was seen flying N from Murtra lagoon mouth, Llobregat
delta, Barcelona on 17.4 (X.Larruy, L.Puyol).One remained few minutes at
El Matà, PN Aiguamolls, Girona on 15.4 (Emmanuel Roy).There were
3 at la Tancada saltpans, Ebre delta, Tarragona on 21.4 (Raphael Lebrun,
Eva Andreu).
Red-throated pipit Anthus cervinus.A bird was seen at Menorca airport, Illes Balears, on 16.4 (Arnau Bonan). The same day there was one at El Matà, PN Aiguamolls (E.Roy, S.Durand).There was one at PN Aiguamolls, el Matà area, Girona on 22.4 (Jordi Martí Aledo)Two birds were seen at La Nava, Palencia on 27.4 (Carlos Gutiérrez Expósito). Pied
Wagtail Motacilla alba yarrellii. There was a bird at Llobregar
river near the town of Castellbisbal, Barcelona, on 2.4 . It was in company
of 20 White Wagtails (Marc Llobet, Alex Ollé).
Aquatic
Warbler. Acrocephalus paludicola. One was seen at Estany del
Cortalet, Roncaires hide, PN Aiguamolls. Girona on 15.4 (Emmanuel Roy)
