Birds in Spain
Recent Reports: Latest sightings JANUARY 2003 * rarities needing homologation by the CR/SEO
Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena. There was a bird at Roses bay, Girona on 16.1 (J.Martí Aledo, T.Montràs). A rarity in NE Spain and the only record so far this winter in Mediterranean Spain.On 12.1 there was a bird at Getaria, Gipuzkoa, Euskadi (Pello Izkeaga, Juantxo Unzueta, Arantxa Aizpurua, Andoni Ruiz). Slavonian
Grebe* Podiceps auritus. On 3.12 there was one at Bahia de Santander,
Cantabria, amongst Black-necked Grebes P.nigricollis (Javier de
la Cruz). There were 11 at Santoña, Cantabria, on 15.1 (Juan G.
Navedo), at least 5 on 13.1 (Alfonso Rodrigo). The Ortigueira bird found
last month was still there on 13.1 (Pablo Gutiérrez). At ria de
Ferrol, there were 2 birds on 17.1 (Pablo & Antonio Gutiérrez).
On 23.1 there was one off Delta de la Tordera, Blanes, Girona/Barcelona
(Xavi Larruy, Xesco Macià). At Convento de Montehano, Santoña,
Cantabria, there were 8 birds. An additiona one was at Bengoa, also Santoña
on 26.1 (M.Rouco, F.J. de la Cruz, J.Talegón, M.A.García
Matellanes, A.Rodrigo). Balearic
Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus. CRITICALLY
ENDANGERED . Any record will be included in an attempt to quantify
overwintering population and movements.+300
birds seen in different flocks off Tavernes de Valldigna, València,
on 1.1 (Luis Aleixos Alapont). There were 15 off Llobregat delta on 3.1
(Ferran López).On 7.1 there were at least 10-15 off Aiguamolls de
l'Empordà, Girona (J.M.Aledo, P.Feliu, R.Gutiérrez, O.Clarabuch,
E.Guinart, B.Minobis, T.Montràs). On 1.1. there were a few off S.José,
Almería flying SW (Martín Rodriguez). The same day, off Trabucador
sandbar, Ebre delta, Tarragona, there were at least 35 birds (Aleix
Comas). The weekend 4-5.1 there were 12 off Arenys de Mar, Barcelona (Paco
Cabrera). On 18.1 there were 230 off Cap de Creus, Girona (Ponç
Feliu et al). In the same seawatch, 60 Mediterranean Shearwaters
P.yelkouan
were
counted. On 19.1 there were 2200 off Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València
(Marcial Yuste Blasco). There were 2 off El Abra, Bilbao, Euskadi on 17.1
(Gorka Ocio). There were <100 off Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 18.1
(R.Gutiérrez et al/Cens hivernal
en prep.).On 18.1
there were 13 off Tavernes de Valldigna, València (Lluís
Aleixos Alapont).There were 54 off Tarragona harbour in 18.1 midday (R.Lebrun
and E.Andreu). On 19.1 there were 40 off Torredembarra with 2 Audouin's
Gulls L.audouinii nearby (R.Lebrun, E.Andreu).There were over 70
between 1-5 miles off Garraf and Llobregat delta on 23.1. Only 3 Mediterraneans
Puffinus
yelkouan were noted in the same itinerary (R.Gutiérrez, E.Guinart,
F.López, F.X. Santaeufemia).
Little Shearwater* Puffinus assimilis. A corpse of this species has been found and identified amongst the casualties of the Prestige wreck at Pontevedra area in late January by Spanish Rarities Committee member David Bigas, in charge of dead birds analyisis (D.Bigas). More details to come soon. WHITE-FACED STORM-PETREL* Pelagodroma marina. FIRST FOR MAINLAND SPAIN. More new records brought by Prestige wreck: according to Menotti Passarella (in litt. at Avesforum mailing list), an italian volunteer photographed on 8-10 December 2002 a dead Brown Booby at the Pontevedra recovery center at Galicia. Great
White Egret Egretta alba . There were 5 at Caño Guadiamar,
Doñana, n 1.1 (John Butler). On 2.2. the number had raised to 8
at the same place (John Butler). There were 6 at Guadalquivir marshes on
2.1 (Paco Chiclana). There was one between El Bayo and Sádaba, Cinco
Villas, Aragón about 4.1 (Luis Tirado). On 4.1 there were 7 individuals
somewhere in the coast of Málaga (location not given), (FJ Fernández,
E Alba, S Peregrina).There was one at Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València
on 3.1 (Pau Ferrer).On 3.1 there were two near Alcarràs ricefields,
Lleida (Jordi Calvet, Jordi Solans)There were 5-6 at Guadalquivir marshes
on 11.1 (SEO-Sevilla). There were 3 at Segre river, near Lleida on 11.1
(Steve West, Eva Solanes, Ester Freixenet, Enric Farré, Xavier Revés).
On 12.1 there were 2 at Vilanova de la Barca, Lleida (Steve West).On 11.1
there were two at rio Tiétar, Pedro Bernardo, Ávila on 11.1
(Luis Santiago Cano Alonso).There were 18 at Albufera de València
on 9.1 (B.Dies, C.Oltra, J.García). On 13.1 there was a bird at
marisma de Ramallosa, Gondomar, Pontevedra (César Vidal). There
were 2 at S'Albufereta, Mallorca on 13.1 (Jordi Muntaner). On 12.1 there
were 2 at Utxesa reservoir, Lleida (Alex Ollé, Xesco Macià).
There was one at ca l'Arana, Llobregat delta on 18.1 seen during the january
wildfowl count (Ferran López et al). There were 2 at Tajo
river, Aranjuez, Madrid, on 19.1 (Gabriel Martín, Manuel Moreno,
Mario Rodero). There was a bird at Tormes river, Baños de Ledesma,
Salamanca, on 18.1 (G.Hernández, F.Javier de la Cruz et
al).On 18.1 there were 10 at Guadalhorce river mouth, Málaga
(Antonio Tamayo, Luis Armario) -seven on 17.1, same authors-.There were
3 at PN Doñana, Sevilla area on 25.1 (Daniel L. Huertas, P.Chiclana
et
al./ SEO-Sevilla). There were 4 at Utxesa, Lleida, on 26.1 (Gerard
Bota). There was one at Isla Mayor ricefields, Sevilla, on 26.1 (Paco Chiclana).On
11.1 there were 5 at caño Guadiamar, also Sevilla (D.L.Huertas et
al). Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. On 1.1. there were 90 at Entremuros de Guadiamar, Doñana, Huelva (John Butler). The previous day there were 315 at el Perchel roost, also Doñana (Jorge Garzón).There was one at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona, on 7.1 (Jordi Martí Aledo et al).There were 37 at Isla Mayor ricefields, Sevilla on 26.1 (Paco Chiclana). There were 230 at Brazo del Este, Sevilla on 9.1 (Daniel L Huertas, P.Chiclana, M.Villaecija, J.Martín, R.Martín-Baylo).There were 120 on 29.1 at Brazo del Este, Sevilla (Daniel L Huertas). African Spoonbill* Platalea alba. On 14.1 there was a bird in poor condition at Brazo del Este, Sevilla (Alberto Plata). Mute Swan. From 2003, no longer considered as rarity by Spanis RC. On 9.1 it was photographed an adult at Llobregat river, near Sant Boi de Llobregat, Barcelona (see thumbnail here) (R.Gutiérrez, F.X. Santaeufemia, A.Ramal). Presumably the same bird had been seen at Remolar-Filipines reserve, Viladecans, c.10 km from the river, on 7.1 (Armand Ramal) and was previously featured at the same river spot (P.Esteban pers.com). The bird behaved wild.The bird frequented the area since last 17.12.2002 (Sergi Sales). Pink-footed Goose* Anser brachyrhynchus. On 10.1 there were 2 at la Nava lagoon, Palencia (Enrique Gómez Crespo).There was one still there on 25.1 (F.Jubete, Ignacio Torres). White-fronted
Goose Anser albifrons. There were two at Guadalquivir marshes
on 2.1 (Paco Chiclana).There was a bird at polder de Escalante, Santoña,
Cantabria from 4.1 till 11.1 at least (J.G.Navedo). Relocated on 12.1 (David
González et al).The three 1st winters featured last autumn
at Llobregat delta were relocated during the january wildfowl count at
Ricarda lagoon, El Prat de Llobregat (X.Larruy, J.Farreny, G.Siré
et
al). Lesser
White-fronted Goose* Anser erythropus. An adult was present
within a 800 Greylags flock at Villafáfila, Zamora on 11.1 (Pablo
Pita, Antonio Gutiérrez, Pablo Gutiérrez). See

there on 19.1 (M.A.García Matellanes, A.Rodrigo). Snow
Goose* Anser caerulescens. There were 2 blue phase birds at
Salina de Villafáfila, Zamora, on 19.1 (M.A.García Matellanes,
A.Rodrigo).Still there on 25.1 (J.M. de Andrés, Ignacio Torres et
al). Bean Goose Anser fabalis. One rossicus was at la Nava lagoon, Palencia on 10.19(Enrique Gómez Crespo).There was one rossicus at Villafáfila, Zamora on 19.1 (M.A.García Matellanes, A.Rodrigo).Still there on 25.1 (J.M. de Andrés, Ignacio Torres). Ross's Goose* Anser rossi. PRESUMABLY ESCAPE (ed.comment).A bird behaving wild was seen at Mallorca Island, Balearics, on 2.1 (Arthur Stagg). Hybrid
Canada Goose x Greylag Goose Branta canadensis x Anser anser. A
presumably hybrid of these two species was seen at Villafáfila,
Zamora on 18.1 (Miguel Rouco, M.A.García Matellanes).Still there
on 25.1 (J.M. de Andrés, Ignacio Torres).
Barnacle
GooseBranta leucopsis. There was one at Guadalquivir marshes
on 2.1 (Paco Chiclana).There were 3 at la Nava lagoon, Palencia, on 4.1
(David González Ortega).There were 2 at Guadalquivir marshes on
11.1 (SEO-Sevilla).An adult was present at Villafáfila, Zamora on
11.1 (Pablo Pita, Antonio Gutiérrez, Pablo Gutiérrez).Still
there on 25.1 (J.M. de Andrés, Ignacio Torres et al) but
3 on 22.1 (Miguel Rouco, J. de la Cruz).On 25.1 a bird reached estany
del Cortalet, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (J. Martí
Aledo, Mireia Jiménez, Berto Minobis). There was one at la Escupidera
area, PN Doñana, Sevilla on 11.1 (Paco Chiclana et al). Brent
Goose. Branta bernicla. There was one at RN Santoña,
Cantabria, on 15.1 (Juan G. Navedo). It was there already on 12.1 (David
González). Egyptian Goose* Alopochen aegyptiacus. There were 2 free-flying unringed individuals, at Estuario do Minho, A Guarda, Pontevedra on 26.1 (César Vidal).In the same area, a male Garganey Anas querquedula, perhaps the 1st record for Spain this year. Ruddy
Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea. There was one at Guadalquivir marshes
on 2.1 (Paco Chiclana).There was one at la Nava lagoon, Palencia, on 4.1
(David González Ortega).A bird presumably either of this species
or a Egyptian Goose or even any hybrid was seen at very long distance from
Torredembarra beach, Tarragona, migrating S with 2 Shelducks T.tadorna
on 5.1 (Xavier Larruy).The la Nava bird was still there on 10.1 (E.Gómez
Crespo). There was one at Guadalquivir marshes on 11.1 (SEO-Sevilla).There
was a female on 11.1 at Escupidera area, PN Doñana, Sevilla (D.L.Huertas
et
al). Mandarin Duck* Aix galericulata. The drake seen last december 2002 at Llobregat delta, Barcelona, was relocated within RN Remolar-Filipines area on 18.1 (Xesco Macià, Emma Guinart).Relocated again at Vidala lagoon, same area on 26.1 (Emma Guinart, Paco Blanco). American Wigeon* Anas americana. There was an adult male at Miño river mouth, A Guarda, Pontevedra, Galicia, on 11.1 (Rafael Salvadores, José Manuel Mariño).It was still there on 16.1 (César Vidal).There was one male at Ensenada da Insua, Ponteceso, A Coruña, on 25-26.1 (J.L.Rabuñal; David Bigas et al). Green-winged
Teal* Anas carolinensis. The PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà
bird featured last month began the year at the same place (J.Martí
Aledo) and it was presumably still there, although not relocated, by 7.1.A
drake was at Estuario del Miño, A Guarda, Pontevedra,from 13.1 (Rafael
y Tito Salvadores) to 16.1 at least (César Vidal). The PN Aiguamolls
drake was relocated on 12.1 (Aleix Comas). The Aiguamolls bird seen again
on 17.1 (J.Marti Aledo, M.Jiménez). Hybrid Mallard x Pintail Anas cf. platyrhynchos x acuta. A drake showing intermediate characters was reported from ria de Eo, Lugo-Asturies, on 7.1 (Pablo Fernández). Hybrid Mallard x Red-Crested Pochard Anas platyrhynchos x Netta rufina. The bird reported in 2002 at Llobregat delta (see photos here) was relocated at the same place on 9.1.2003 (R.Gutiérrez, A.Ramal). Ring-necked Duck* Aythya collaris. The 'party' (up to seven were counted) of birds at Traba lagoon, Laxe, A Coruña, now formed by 5 females and a male, were still there on 5-6.1 (J.Luis Rabuñal).The pair of birds of Embalse das Forcadas, A Coruña, was still there on 17.1 (Pablo & Antonio Gutiérrez) Scaup
Aythya
marila. One male and 2 ad. females were at Ensenada da Fianteira, Sanxenxo/Meanho,
Galicia, on 5.1 (Cosme Damiám Romai Cousido). Perhaps those birds
were part of a flock of seven (a male and six females) seen by mid-december
at the same area (Emilio Martínez Sabarís).There was a female
at Utxesa reservoir, Lleida on 11.1 (Steve West, Eva Solanes, Ester Freixenet,
Enric Farré, Xavier Revés).There was one at RN Santoña,
Cantabria on 15.1 (J.G.Navedo). This bird had arrived to the reserve on
late november 2002.The female of Utxesa was still there on 26.1 (Gerard
Bota). Ferruginous duck Aythya nyroca. There was a male at Entremuros, Sevilla, on 4.1 (Paco Chiclana). Two males were seen at Gravera Picón de los Conejos, Velilla de San Antonio, Madrid, on 4.1 (Delfín González, Miguel Juan Martínez). The bird at Traba lagoon, Laxe, A Coruña, was still there (see last month) on 5-6.1 (J.Luis Rabuñal).At Mas Blanc pond, Fraga, Huesca, there was one drake on 3.1 (Jordi Solans, Jordi Calvet).At Gravera del Porcal, Madrid, there was a bird on 12.1 (Delfín González). Somateria
mollissima. There were 2 offshore at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà,
Girona, on 8.1 (Marc Gálvez)In the same area, there were 3-4 on
18.1 (Pomç Feliu/APNAE)On 16.1 there was one between Cambrils and
L'Hospitalet de l'Infant, Tarragona (Eduard Barba, Ismael Bernat, Pere
Josa Anguera). Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis. There were 3 at RN Santoña estuary on 10.1 (Nacho Fernández Calvo). Goldeneye Bucephala clangula. At ria de San Martín, Cantabria, there were 3 birds on 18.1 (Maximo Sánchez Cobo & Alejandro García).
Corncrake Crex crex. A bird crashed into a window at El Prat de Llobregat, Barcelona on 3.1. It was brought to the town council where it was identified by their biologists (E. de Roa, P.Esteban). Later it was brought to the Llobregat delta NR and the recovery center (F.López). See a photo below and a thumbnail here. Both photos © Ricard Gutiérrez. The bird was successfully recovered at Torreferrussa Center and was released at Maresma de les Filipines,Viladecans, Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 8.1 (Ferran López). News were covered by local tv station.
Crested Coot Fulica cristata. On 1.1. there were singles at J A Valverde center and Caño Guadiamar, Doñana, Huelva (John Butler). On 2.2. the number at Caño Guadiamar had raised to two (John Butler).There were two at Guadalquivir marshes on 2.1 (Paco Chiclana).There were 5 -two neck-banded - at Dehesa de Abajo, Aznalcazar, Sevilla and another at Caño de Guadiamar, Sevilla on 4.1 (John Butler). AMERICAN
COOT* Fulica americana. SECOND
FOR SPAIN. An adult was found on 5.1 at O
Grove marshes, Pontevedra, Galicia by Cosme Damiam Romai Cousido. It was
only at 10-15 m with other coots. Also seen on 6.1 at Rouxique lagoons,
Sanxenxo (C.D. Romai; César Vidal and others of SGO; Pablo y Antonio
Gutiérrez). There are photos and an special page is under constuction.

On 16.1 there was a bird, seen at extremely close range, at Laguna de Tiscar, Puente Genil, Córdoba (Clem Davis).On 25.1 one was found at PN Doñana, Sevilla province (Manolo Villaécija). Lesser Yellowlegs* Tringa flavipes. The overwintering oiled bird at Ensenada da Insua, Ponteceso, A Coruña, was still there on 5-6.1 (J.L. Rabuñal Patiño). Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalus. EXTRALIMITAL INLAND RECORD. An adult moulting to summer plumage was seen at Gravera Picón de los Conejos, Velilla de San Antonio, Madrid, on 4.1 (Delfín González).Another in winter plumage was at the same place on 7.1 (Gabriel Martín García). Ring-billed
Gull* Larus delawarensis. The adult present at least from 25.11
at playa de Ares, A Coruña, Galicia (Pablo y Antonio Gutiérrez)

another bird, a 2nd winter, was present at playa de Salías, Ria
de Eo, Lugo-Asturies (Pablo Fernández).There was one at Estuario
del Miño, A Guarda, Pontevedra, on 16.1 (César Vidal). At

Gutiérrez) At ria de Cedeira, A Coruña, there
were an adult and a 1st winter on 13.1 (see photo of the adult below and

There were 2 at Santander Bay on 12.1 (M.A.García Matellanes, A.Rodrigo,
Fernando Arce).There was one at Santander bay on 26.1, This is not one
of the two birds previously cited as there were plumage differences (F.Arce).
Common Gull Larus canus. EXTRALIMITAL INLAND RECORD. There was a bird at Gravera del Porcal, Madrid, on 12.1 (Delfín González).Another inland record: a 2nd winter at near laguna de la Nava, Palencia (Enrique Gómez Crespo).Inland at Lleida province there was a 2nd winter at Utxesa reservoir on 26.1 (Gerard Bota). Iceland
Gull* Larus glaucoides. Two records from Asturies: a 1st winter
was seen at Gijón on 3.1 (Xuán Fernández García)
and was still there on 11.1 at the Rula area of the harbour of Gijón

off playa de Salinas, Asturies (Daniel López Velasco).
Glaucous
Gull* Larus hyperboreus. There was a 2nd winter at Bengoa marshes,
RN Santoña, Cantabria, on 13.1 (M.A.García Matellanes, Alfonso
Rodrigo). Guillemot Uria aalge. EXTRALIMITAL RECORD. There were 2 birds off Cap de Creus, Girona, on 18.1 (Ponç Feliu et al/APNAE). The species is accidental in NE Spain. Richard's
Pipit* Anthus richardi. On 8.1 there was a bird in meadows near
Los Penedos Blancos, Castropol, Asturies (Pablo Fernández García).At
Arnao aerodrome runway, Castropol, Asturies, there were 4 on 9.1 (location
c.250 m from 8.1 sighting, Pablo Fernández García).There
was a bird at Hontoria, Llanes, Asturies on 19.1 (Luís Carrera).Overwintering
in Alacant area: there were 2 at Santa Pola saltpans, Alacant, Mediterranean
coast on 11-25.1 (Malcolm Palmer, José Manuel López, José
Villalba). On 17.1 there were three at the same place (A.Jacobo Ramos,
S.Arroyo) and on 18.1 they were still there and there could have been three
more (Elías Gomis, Raúl González, Paqui Molina).There
were 2 at cabu Penes, Gozón, Asturies, on 23.1 (Clemente Álvarez
Usátegui).There were 2 at Isla Mayor ricefields, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana). Snow Bunting Plectrophenax nivalis. There were 5 at playa de A Frouxeira, Valdoviño, A Coruña on 7.1 (Luz, Víctor and Antonio Fernández).There were four birds at the Musel harbour outer pier, Xixón, Asturies on 21.1 (Clemente Álvarez Usátegui).
