512 birds brought to recovery centers up to 25.11.2002

Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena. One 1w bird was seen at playa de San Llorienzo, Xixón, Asturies, on 4.11 (Elías García).

Slavonian Grebe* Podiceps auritus. There was one at Santoña, Cantabria, on 11.11 (José Miguel Devesa; Juan G Navedo).At the same place there were three at Hano canal on 15.11 (Juan Manuel Pérez de Ana) and at least one on 16.11 (Fernando Arce, Miguel Higueras).First record there from 5.11 (one bird, J.Aja, J.Bustamante). And still 5 birds on 19.11 (Juan G Navedo & A. Bustamante).A bird was at ria de Eo, Lugo/Asturies, on 23.11 (Pablo Fernández García).At Santoña, Cantabria, there were two birds at Convento de Mohedano on 30.11(M.A.García Matellanes, M.Rouco, A.Rodrigo).

White Pelican* Pelecanus onocrotalus.  There were three birds altogether at Caño de Guadiamar, Aznalcazar, Sevilla on 5.11 (John Butler, Barry Rhodes, Samantha & Irene Smeaton). See a thumbnail here

Great White Egret Egretta alba. Late news: at Ría de Navía, Cuaña-Navía, there were two birds on 26.10 (Gilberto Sánchez et al/COA).There was one bird at estuario del Miño, Pontevedra on 4.11 (Miguel Rouco). See a thumbnail here.The bird had been discovered on 2.11 (Jaime Sainz) and was still there on 7.11 (César Vidal). There was a bird at embalse de la Grajera, Logroño, La Rioja, on 6.11 (Jesús Serradilla).On 12.11 there were two at Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València (Pau Ferrer) and one at Llobregat delta, Barcelona (Ricard Gutiérrez).The Llobregat bird still there on 14.11 (F.López). On 12.11 there was one at riu Millars mouth, Castelló de la Plana (Juan Luis Bort). There were four at Aiguabarreig Segre-Cinca, Lleida, on 10.11 (Steve West) and another at Sant Miguel, Lleida, the same day (Steve West).On 7.11 there were 12 at Brazo del Este, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana). On 20.11 there was a  bird at Parque Ecológico de Plaiaundi, Txingudi, Irun, Gipuzkoa (Alberto Luengo). There were 5 birds at S'Albufereta de Pollença, Mallorca, on 23.11 (Maties Rebassa).One was at Filipines marsh, Delta del Llobregat, Barcelona, on 25.11 (F.Lopez).Some tens at Ebre delta on 27.11, e.g. one near Canal Vell (D.Bigas, R.Gutierrez).On 25.11 there was a bird at Torrelavega, Cantabria (Ramón Balbás). On 24.11 there was a bird near Manlleu, Barcelona, and inland location (Inga Drake, R.Baucells, M.Bacardit i Martí Rodriguez). On 2.11 there had been a bird at Torrelavega, Cantabria (José Miguel Soler).At Plasencia, Cáceres, there was one on 27.11 (Javier Prieta).There was one bird at Ribas de Campos, N of Palencia, at km 24 of N611 road on 30.11 (M.A.García Matellanes, M.Rouco, A.Rodrigo).

Presumed hybrid Little x Western Reef Herons* Egretta gularis x garzetta. One bird showing intermediate characters as some birds reported last summer was seen at Tancada saltpans, Ebre delta, Tarragona on 3.11 (Josep Tantull).

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. On 5.11 there was a bird at estanys del Matà, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (J.Martí Aledo). One at Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València on 12.11 (Pau Ferrer). There was one near Villafáfila village, Zamora, on 2.11 (Juan Manuel Pérez García, Alfonso Rodrigo).There was one at Gallocanta, Zaragoza, on 13.11 (José Miguel Pueyo).Two were at camí dels Polls, S'Albufera de Mallorca, on 16.11 (Lalo Ventoso).There was one at Llobregat delta on 19.11 (Pedro Bescós).A bird that had been found in October at Ria de Villaviciosa, Asturies, was still there on 22.11 (COA  - Pablo Fernández García). RECORD NUMBER Perhaps the highest-ever single count in Spain: on 2.11 there were 580 birds feeding on rice-fields at Brazo del Este, Sevilla (Daniel L.Huertas).There was a bird at PN Tablas de Daimiel on 18-24.11 (Avesforum).

Sacred Ibis* Threskiornis aethiopicus. There was one at camí dels Polls, S'Albufera de Mallorca, on 16.11 (Lalo Ventoso).

Yellow-billed Stork Mycteria ibis. E SPECIES (escape). The bird arrived at Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València in late august was still there on 12.11 (Pau Ferrer)

Whooper Swan* Cygnus cygnus. The bird (an adult) previously featured in the October report was observed on 1.11 and 2.11 at Marisma do Bau, O Grove (Ogrobe), Pontevedra, Galicia (Xurxo Pinheiro, Cosme Damiám Romai Cousido, Miguel Rouco; Marcial Lorenzo, Gonzalo Mucientes).Still there on 4.11 (Emílio Martínez, Delfín González).See a thumbnail here.On 22-23.11 there was a bird at ria de Villaviciosa, Asturies (Pablo Fernández García) 

Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis. The bird lingering around estuario do Miño, A Guarda, Pontevedra and reported previously as of dubious origin, was seen again on 4.11 (Miguel Rouco). See a thumbnail here.There were twp at least at Boada de Campos, Palencia on 23.11 (Mariano Torres).

Brent Goose Branta bernicla.On 16.11 there was one bird at Santoña, Cantabria (Máximo Sánchez Cobo).Not seen on 19.11 (Juan Gómez Navedo).Seen again on 22.11 amongst 3000 Anas penelope (Juan G Navedo).

Ruddy Shelduck* Tadorna ferruginea. On 8.11 there was one at salinetes de can Picafort, Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Sebastià Torrens)

White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons. There were four birds atmarismas de Baldaio, A Coruña on  3.11.  Three of them belonged to spp flavirrostris (Cosme-Damián Romai, Xurxo Pinheiro , Miguel Rouco). See a thumbnail here.On 11.11, there were 3 juveniles/1w at cal Tet lagoon, Llobregat delta, Barcelona. These are the first Anatidae reported in this brand 'new' lagoon recovered as part of a management project. 2nd record for the area and 5th for Catalonia (F.X.Santaeufemia, F.López, J.Castelló).The three birds were still there on 25.11 (F.López). There were five at laguna de Tamariz de Campos, Valadolid on 22-24.11. One of them was carrying a dark (blue or black) neck collar with letters B PU (Mariano Torres; Chema Lorenzo). The Llobregat delta birds were still there on 27.11 (Ferran González Prat). See a thumbnail here.

Pink-footed Goose* Anser brachyrhynchus. There was an adult at Salburua wetland, Vitoria, Euskadi, from 20-25.11 at least (Julia Knorr). See a thumbnail here. Was still there on 26.11 (Luis Lobo).

American Wigeon* Anas americana. An adult male was observed among 100-150 Eurasian Wigeons Anas penelope at Ria de Foz, Galicia (Galiza) on 1-2.11. (Luis J. Salaverri, Francisco J. Fernández Otero, Xurxo Pinheiro, Miguel Rouco, Cosme Damiám Romai Cousido, Sara, Salvador). There is another male at Galicia: a bird was at Ria de Eo, Lugo on 4.11, probably having been there since October (Pablo Fernández García). See a thumbnail of the Foz bird here

Green-winged Teal* Anas carolinensis. The male reported previously at La Furta reservoir, Corvera, Asturies, was still there at the beggining of the month, from 31.10 onwards (Elias García Sánchez/COA) There were two males at estuario do Minho, A Guarda, Pontevedra, on 7.11 (César Vidal).On 15.11, the bird at la Furta was relocated again (Pablo Fernández).At Estuario do Minho, A Guarda, Pontevedra, the two males were still ther on 26.11 followed by a female (César Vidal). The bird at La Furta was still there on 24.11 (Clemente Álvarez). On 30.11 a male, the 2nd for Catalonia, was found at the same place than 1st: Cortalet lagoon, at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà (Xavier del Acebo, Jordi Martí). American Black Duck*Anas rubripes. An adult male was observed among Mallards Anas platyrhynchos at Ria de Foz, Galicia (Galiza) on 1-2.11 (Luis J. Salaverri, Francisco J. Fernández Otero, Xurxo Pinheiro, Miguel Rouco, Cosme Damiám Romai Cousido, Sara, Salvador). 

Blue-winged Teal* Anas discors. An immature male was found at Roquito del Fraile, Tenerife, on 8.11 (Barry Lancaster) and was still there on 10.11 (Tony Clarke)

Ring-necked Duck* Aythya collaris. From 30.10 there was a 1st winter female at marisma de la Ramallosa, Baiona. Pontevedra. It was showing almost a juvenile plumage with only a few moulted feathers (César Vidal). See a thumbnail of a sketch here. Three females (probably 1st winter individuals) were observed together with 3 Tufted Ducks (Aythya fuligula) at Lagoa de Traba, Laxe, Galicia (Galiza) on 1.11 (Xurxo Pinheiro, Miguel Rouco, Cosme Damiám Romai Cousido). See a photo below:From 19-22.11 at least there were a male and a female at embalse de As Forcadas, Valdoviño (Pablo y Antonio Gutiérrez).On 24.11 there was an adult male at Vixán lagoon, Corrubedo Natural Park, A Coruña, Galicia (R.Salvadores, F.Arcos Rodríguez). The 3 Traba lagoon females were still there on 25.11 (JL Rabuñal, Jordi Martí-Aledo et al).

Females Lesser Scaup (A.affinis) and Ring-necked Duck (A.collaris) at Embalse de As Forcadas, Valdoviño, Galicia. Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca. One of the two males at la Furta reservoir, Corvera, Asturies that had been reported until 6.10 at least, was still at the same place on 31.10 (COA) and probably afterwards (Elias García).There were two males at Canal Vell, Delta de l'Ebre, on 5.11 (Sergi Sales).

Scaup Aythya marila. Late news from October in Asturies: two birds (Immature male and female)at San Andrés reservoir, Xixón, on 23.10 (Elías García) and two juveniles at Castripol harbour (ría de Eo, Asturies/Lugo) on 26.10 (Elías García et al / COA). A female was observed next to Eurasian Wigeons Anas penelope and Mallards Anas platyrhynchos at Ria de Foz, Galicia (Galiza) on 1-2.11. (Luis J. Salaverri, Francisco J. Fernández Otero, Xurxo Pinheiro, Miguel Rouco, Cosme Damiám Romai Cousido, Sara Salvador). Two hybrids Scaup x Tufted duck (A.fuligula x marila) were reported at Rouxique gravel pits, Sanxenxo, Galicia (Galiza) on 1.11. On 4.11 it was still there (Emilio Martínez, Delfín González). See thumbnails hereThere were two immatures at ria de Eo on 18.11. Perhaps the same birds reported on 26.10 at Castropol (Pablo Fernández).

Lesser Scaup* Aythya affinis. There was a female together with two Ring-necked Ducks (see above) at embalse de As Forcadas, Valdoviño from 19-22.11 at least (Pablo y Antonio Gutiérrez).

Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis. A female or immature was at Tazones, La Villa, Asturies on 27.10 (Emilio García Fernández).There was a bird on 24.11 at Vixán lagoon, Corrubedo Natural Park, A Coruña, Galicia (R.Salvadores, F.Arcos Rodríguez)

Goldeneye. Bucephala clangula. There was one at Traba lagoon, A Coruña, on c.25.11 (JL Rabuñal, Jordi Martí Aledo et al).

Rough-legged Buzzard* Buteo lagopus. A bird was reported from Vic, Barcelona, on 10.11. A description is being summarized for CR/SEO (Martí Rodríguez).

Crested Coot Fulica cristata. At El Rocío, Doñana, Huelva, there was one unringed bird on 2.11 (Juan Carlos Marín, Alfonso López & SEO-Sevilla).There were two marked birds at Odiel marshes, Huelva, on 16.11 (Daniel L Huertas).

Pectoral Sandpiper* Calidris melanotos. The juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper found on 26/10 at Roquito del Fraile, Tenerife, Canary Islands, was still present the morning of 1.11 (Tony Clarke).

Temminck's Stint Calidris temminckii. There were two in recently harvested and ploughed rice fields beside the Dehesa de Abajo, Sevilla on 1.11 (John Butler).

Lesser Yellowlegs*Tringa flavipes. One juvenile was observed on 1-3.11amongst 60-70 Greenshanks Tringa nebularia at Enseada da Ínsua, Ponteceso-Cabana, Galicia (Galiza) (Xurxo Pinheiro, Miguel Rouco, Cosme Damiám Romai Cousido). The bird at Ensenada da Ínsua was still there on 17.11 (José Luís Rabuñal Patiño) and presented a partially oiled plumage as many neighbour waders due to effects of 'Prestige' tanker wreck affecting Galicia 'Costa da Morte'. The bird was in rather bad condition and it is thought that will remain in the area at leas for some time.

Sabine's Gull Larus sabini. In migration in front of Punta de la Vaca, Gozón, Asturies, there were three birds on 23.10 and another on 25.10 (Elías García).

Ring-billed Gull* Larus delawarensis. Late news: there were an adult and a 2nd winter at playa de Bañugues, Gozón, Asturies about 25.10 (Rubén Fernández, Mª Teresa Reigada).There was one amongst  Black-headed Gulls (Larus ridibundus) at bahia de Santander, Cantabria on 13.11 (Javier de la Cruz).On 7.11 a bird was reported from Serradal beach, Castelló de la Plana, Mediterranean coast (Miguel Tirado).It was still there on 15.11 (M.Tirado).

Glaucous Gull* Larus hyhperboreus. On 23.11 there was a 1st winter bird at Hondarribia harbour, Gipuzkoa, Euskadi (David Calleja Marcos, M. Angel López de Armentia).

Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus. Only extralimital records. On 17.11 there was a 1st winter bird at Gravera del Porcal, Rivas-Vaciamadrid, Madrid (Delfín González, Miguel Juan Martínez). The 2nd for Madrid.

Royal Tern* Sterna maxima. There was a bird seen fishing near the coast at Sancti Petri, Cádiz on 1.11 (Paco Chiclana)

Little Auk Alle alle. Two birds were seen at Cariño, A Coruña, Galicia on 20.11 (José Miguel Alonso Pumar, Delfín González). See a thumbnail of one of the birds here. On 18.11 a bird was found dead at la Cueva beach, Valdés, Asturies (Gonzalo Palomero, Jaime Galguera).

Richard's Pipit* Anthus richardi. Late news: at least one bird at Cabu Peñes, Gozón, on 22.10 (Elias García). 4 birds were observed together in meadows just 250 m. south of Lagoa de Traba, Laxe, Galicia (Galiza) on 1.11 (Xurxo Pinheiro, Miguel Rouco, Cosme Damiám Romai Cousido)There was one at Palma de Mallorca airport on 27.11 (Arnau Bonan)

Pied Wagtail Motacilla alba yarrellii. Only extralimital records. There was a male at Ebre delta, Tarragona from 5.7.11 (David Bigas, Sergi Sales). See two thumbnails here.At Sevilla, there was an adult male at Isla Menor ricefields on 3.11 (Paco Chiclana). The Ebre delta bird was still there on 18.11 (David Bigas).At Sevilla, a male was trapped and ringed on 15.11 at San Pablo roost (Javier Seoane).The Ebre delta bird, still there on 27.11 (O.Clarabuch, E.Garcia, M.Llobet).

Eastern Stonechat* Saxicola torquata maura/stejnegeri. Two birds, presumably 1w or females, were reported from Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València, on 1.11 (Marcial Yuste)

Paddyfield Warbler* Acrocephalus agricola. An adult bird was trapped and ringed at Canal Vell Biological Station, delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona, on 27.11 (Oriol Clarabuch,Marc Llobet, Julia Piccardo, David Bigas).See photos below

Yellow-browed Warbler* Phylloscopus inornatus. One bird was reported on 2.11 near Remolar lagoon, Llobregat delta, Barcelona in a place where it had been seen in previous years (Daniel González). It was not relocated afterwards despite intensive search.

Snow Bunting Plectrophenax nivalis. Late october sightings from Asturies: 3 birds at Peroño, Gozón, on 21.10 (Elías García); one bird at ría de la Villa, Asturies, on 21.10 (B.Busto, G.Gil, E.Llosa and X.Cortés) and  3 birds at El Musel, Xove, Xixón, on 28.10 (Xurde Gayol).
