Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena. Extreme rarity in the Mediterranean. A bird was reported from Empuriabrava, Badia de Roses area, Girona, on 11.10 feeding near the shore near a Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus (Marc Gálvez, Natàlia Corcoll).

Slavonian Grebe* Podiceps auritus. One bird was claimed from Marjals d'Almenara, Castelló, on 14.10 (Victor J Hernández).

Madeiran Storm Petrel* Oceanodroma castro. 4th for Spain. A bird was captured alive at Club de Mar, A Coruña, Galicia on 24.10. After being measured, ringed and photographed, it was released (Antonio Sandoval). 

Black-browed Albatros* Diomedea [Thalassarche] melanophrys. One was seen from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia, on 27.10 (Antonio Sandoval)

Great White Egret Egretta alba.  There were seven at Remolar-Filipines Reserve, Llobregat delta, on 2.10 (N.Urios, F.López, R.Gutiérrez et al ) and 9 on 3.10 (Pedro Bescós). .See a thumbnail here.A bird was at Gama meadows at Santoña, Cantabria, on 1.10 (Juan G.Navedo). Six remained at Llobregat delta on 4.10 (Pedro Bescòs).There were 3 birds at Marjals d'Almenara, Castelló, on 4.10 (Víctor J Hernández).Still two at Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València, on 5.10 (Marcial Yuste). See a thumbnail here.Another was inland at Gravera del Porcal, Rivas-Vaciamadrid, Madrid on 6.10 (Miguel Juan Martínez, Javier Marchamalo, Delfín González).There was one at Laguna de Cristo, Aldehuela de Yeltes, Salamanca on 1.10 (Juan José Ramos Encalado). On 6.10 there were 16 at Brazo del Este, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana).One was at Rioturbio, PN Oyambre, Cantabria on 5-6.10 and it seems to be the same bird reported last month in the same place (Manolo Alcántara, Fernando Arce, Carlos Sainz).Abundant at Ebre Delta, Tarragona by 10.10 (D.Bigas). There was one at Basses d'en Coll, Pals, Girona, on 9.10 (C.Barriocanal).One at Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València, on 13.10 (Pau Ferrer). Some present at Brazo del Este, Sevilla on 12.10 (Paco Chiclana).Two at Llobregat delta, Barcelona, on 15.10 (N.Urios, FX Santaeufemia, R.Gutierrez). A bird was at ria de Navia, Asturies on 1-12.10 at least (X.Gayol; Gilberto S.Jardón). On 13.10 there were 5 birds at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, between la Rogera and el Matà (P.Feliu, M.Sánchez, J.Sargatal et al).There were one at Salinas de Algaida, Sevilla on 9.10 and one at Brazo del Este, Sevilla on 11.10 (Ian Kinley). An influx was noted at Euskadi this month: 5 were reported early the month (Alberto Luengo) and 3 more were there on 15.10 (Mikel Etxazniz, A.Luengo) at Playaundi, Txingudi, Irun, Gizpuzkoa; there was one at Parque Salburúa, Gasteiz-Vitoria, Alava, on 11.10 (Joseba del Villar et al). At ria de Navía, Asturies, where one was reported from 1-12.10 (see above) there were two birds on 20.10 (Gilberto S. Jardón). There is a stunning image of the first Navia bird here (opens in another browser window). There was one at ria de la Villa, Asturies, on 20.10 (P.J. Menéndez et al/COA).There were 3 at Marjal dels Moros on 21.10 (Marcial Yuste). On 20.10 there was a bird at brazo de Maturana, Parque de Garaio, Álava/Araba, Euskadi (Gorka Belamendia).Two were at Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 23.10 (F.López). There was one at Santa Pola Saltpans Natural Park, Santa Pola, Alacant, on 19.10 (Raúl González, Paqui Molina).A bird was at La Nava, Palencia, on 21.10 (Santiago de la Parte). Western Reef Heron* Egretta gularis. One was reported from Brazo del Este, Sevilla, on 10.10 (Ian Kinley).

African Spoonbill* Platalea alba. A bird was seen on 6.10 at Doñana, near the Cortijo de los Olivillos area (John Butler, Bruce & Bonnie Weaver).Still there on 7.10 (John Butler).The bird was still there on 10.10 (Ian Kinley).On 12-13.10 there was a bird at Brazo del Este, Sevilla (unknown observers, communicated by Alberto Plata).

Sacred Ibis* Threskiornis aethiopicus. There were two at S'Albufera de Mallorca, Mallorca, on 4.10 (Rafael Mas).Still one at the same place on 19.10 (Maties Rebassa).

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. There was a bird at Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta, Barcelona, on 3.10 (R.Gutiérrez, A.Martínez-Vilalta et al). There were two at Vilaüt, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà on 4.10 (J.Martí Aledo, T.Montràs). A juvenile was at Marjals d'Almenara, Castelló, on 4.10 (Víctor J Hernández).There was one at camí dels Polls, Mallorca, on 9.10 (Lalo Ventoso) and two at Llobregat delta, Barcelona the same day under a 320 l/m2 shower (F.López, R.Gutiérrez).There were c.250 birds at Brazo del Este, Sevilla on 12.10 (Paco Chiclana).

Yellow-billed Stork Mycteria ibis. E SPECIES (escape). The bird arrived at Marjal del Moro, Sagunt, València in late august was still there on 1.10 (Víctor J Hernández). Now it's lacking the 4-5 innermost primaries of each wing.Still there on 13.10 (Pau Ferrer), see photo below from 5.10 (photo © Marcial Yuste).Another bird was seen on 22.10 at Paraje Natural Brazo del Este, Sevilla (John Butler, Philip and Jean Jones).

Whooper Swan* Cygnus cygnus. From 24-27.10 there was a bird at O Grove, Pontevedra, Galicia (Emilio Sabarís)

Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis. A party of five individuals was seen flying over Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta at 10:58 of 6.10 and subsequently flying South, during the World Birdwatch celebration and were seen by a number of visitors there. It's the second record in the reserves after a previous one in 1984 (R.Gutiérrez, F.X. Santaeufemia, F.López).There was one at estuario del Miño on 19.10 (Luis Enrique Senra  Valverde) but this bird seems to be feral as it has been seen before in the same area behaving anormally (César Vidal pers. com.).

White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons. There were four at Baldaio, Carballo, A Coruña, on 27.10 (Alvaro Barros)

Egyptian Goose* Alopochen aegyptiacus. One bird was seen on 20.10 swimming at Canal Gran of S'Albufera de Mallorca Natural Park. The first reported this winter (Bernat Ramis). Where do these Mallorca geese come from? Most of recent sightings refer to this island.And some seem of dubious origin, others behave wild. Any information is welcome (editorial comment).

Ruddy Shelduck* Tadorna ferruginea. There was one at camí dels Polls, Mallorca, on 9.10 (Lalo Ventoso).There were two unringed birds at Salina Grande de Villafáfila, Zamora, on 27.10 (M.A. García Matellanes, Fernando García Roncero, Alfonso Rodrigo).

American Wigeon* Anas americana. A male was seen at ria de Eo, Asturies-Lugo, on 5.10 (J.Rodríguez).A female appeared at Traba lagoon,  A Coruña, on 27.10 (J.Luis Rabuñal Patiño). l

American Black Duck* Anas rubripes. On 12.10 the bird at ria de Foz, Lugo, and seen on September, remained there (J.José Ramos Encalado)

Marbled Teal Marmaronetta angustirostris. We include here extralimital, limital records or noteworthy numbers. A male was at Mata del Fang, PN Albufera de València, one of its northernmost sites in its range (J.I. Dies)

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca. There were two males at embalse de la Furta, Corvera, Asturies, on 26.9 and at least one remained until 2.10 (E. García Sánchez y PJ Menéndez). In the last years there have been there between 2-4 overwintering birds.Still at La Furta on 22.10 (Clemente Álvarez). On 22.10 there was a female at Mata del Fang, PN Albufera de València (J.I. Dies)

Ring-necked Duck* Aythya collaris. There were 3 females altogether at Traba lagoon,  A Coruña, on 26.10 (J.Luis Rabuñal Patiño).

Scaup Aythya marila. There was an immature male at Racó de l'Olla, PN Albufera de València, on 22.10 (J.I. Dies). You can see an image here (opens in another browser window)

Lesser Scaup* Aythya affinis There was a female from 25-27.10 at Rouxique, Sanxexo, Pontevedra (Cosme Damiam Romai Cousido).

Eider Somateria mollissima A 1st winter was seen on 1.10 off the Prat de Llobregat coast in the area where the new Barcelona harbour is being constructed (F. González). On 2.10 the bird, which was in bad condition, was recovered and brought to a recovery center (F. González, F X Santaeufemia, F López, R Gutiérrez). See a thumbnail here.There was a young male at Bañugues beach, Gozón, Asturies from 27.9 to 5.10 when it was found dead ( J.Valella, PJ Menéndez et al / COA). Two immature males were seen flying W off Punta de la Vaca, Gozón, Asturies (Elías García Sánchez).Another immature male was found dead at playa de l'Espartal, Salinas, Castrillón, Asturies on 12.10 (D. López Velasco). There was a female at Penarronda beach, Castripol/Tapia, Asturies, on 12.10 (Xurde Gayol) and there was a female off Punta de la Vaca, Gozón, on 17.10 (E.García Sánchez).

Ruddy Duck* Oxyura jamaicensis. A female appeared at Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València, on 30.10 (Marcial Yuste).

Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura. Presumably, an E species. There is a bird lingering by Mallorca, Balearic Islands, since late march 2001. There are a number of these photos taken on 20.10 in this website of the author (opens in another window) (Lalo Ventoso).

Lesser-Spotted Eagle* Aquila pomarina. An adult was reported on 3.10 from 'Trafico' bird-observatory, Tarifa, Cádiz (Pablo Fernández García, Sergio Pérez Gil). The species has been reported at least once in that place before.

Long-legged Buzzard* Buteo rufinus One was reported from Sierra de la Plata, Cádiz, on 7.10 (Ian Kinley).A bird was reported from 'Algarrobo' bird-observatory, Tarifa, Cádiz, from 30.9-6.10 (Pablo Fernández García, Sergio Pérez Gil)

Eleonora's Falcon Falco eleonorae. A bird was seen at Desierto de las Palmas NP, Castelló, on 6.10 (Vicente Esteller).

Corncrake Crex crex. A bird was photographed at Mallorca, Balearic Islands on 15.10 (J.Muntaner, P.Vicens)

Crested Coot Fulica cristata.  The last marked bird (see september report) was still at Marjals d'Almenara, Castelló, on 4.10 (Víctor J Hernández).There was one marked bird at l'Encanyissada lagoon, Ebre delta, Tarragona, on 6.10 (Albert Cama, Philippe Garcia). Further two marked birds reached Almenara marjal from 10-14.10 (Victor J Hernández et al).There was one bird neck-banded at Brazo del Este, Sevilla, on 10.10 (Ian Kinley)

Dotterel Charadrius morinellus. There was a party of 8 individuals near Bujaraloz, Monegros area, Aragon on 13.10 (A.Cama, P.Josa, P.García).

American Golden Plover* Pluvialis dominica. 3rd for Catalonia. Just 5 minutes after seeing the 2nd catalan-ever Long-billed Dowitcher (see below), and while scanning the neighbour ricefield, an American Golden Plover was found on 17.10 (David Bigas). The bird was not relocated on 18.10.See a thumbnail here On 19.10 there was an adult at desembocadura del Guadalhorce, Málaga (Antonio Miguel Pérez Ortigosa).

Long-billed Dowitcher* Limnodromus scolopaceus. A dowitcher still not properly identified but putatively assigned to scolopaceus rather than griseus was seen from 9-17.10 at least at PN S'Albufera de Mallorca, Illes Balears (P.Vicens, N.Riddiford, et al).A SECOND SIMULTANEOUS BIRD! , a first winter, was found at Panissos ricefields, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 17-18.10 (David Bigas), the 2nd for Catalonia.The Mallorca bird was still there on 19.10 (Maties Rebassa).See a thumbnail of the Ebre bird here

Semipalmated Sandpiper* Calidris pusilla. One bird was found in company of a Pectoral Sandpiper Calidris melanotos on 20.10 at laguna de Traba, Laxe, A Coruña (José Luís Rabuñal Patiño). On 21.10 the bird was still there but now joined by a Baird's Sandpiper (!!!) (J.L. Rabuñal).

White-rumped Sandpiper* Calidris fuscicollis. There were FOUR altogether at Roquito del Fraile, Tenerife, Canary Islands, on 21.10. All were juveniles moulting into 1st winter birds. A description has already been submitted to the CR/SEO (Tony Clarke)

Baird's Sandpiper* Calidris bairdii. TWO RECORDS AT GALICIA: one juvenile was found in company of a Semipalmeated Sandpiper (see above) on 21.10 at laguna de Traba, Laxe, A Coruña (José Luís Rabuñal Patiño). On 22.10, an adult moulting into winter plumage was located at Playa Ladeira, Baiona, Pontevedra (César Vidal). See a sketch here.The bird at Traba presumably moved to Laxe beach (c. 5 km distance) where it was relocated on 27.10 (J.Luis Rabuñal).

Pectoral Sandpiper* Calidris melanotos. An adult male was seen and photographed at ca l'Arana, El Prat de Llobregat, Llobregat delta, on 1.10 (Ferran González, Pau Esteban). The same day, the 2nd juvenile reported this autumn in the Llobregat delta was relocated at Filipines marsh, Viladecans, Llobregat delta, Barcelona (F.López, M Moreno, X Escobar).See two thumbnails of the first bird only seen on 1.10 but not on 2.10 here. On 3.10 a juvenile was located at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (J. Martí Aledo). This is the 14th record for the area since 1987. J.Martí points out that what seems to be an irruption this year in Spain might be linked with their sightings in Açores islands, at Terceira, where a total of 7 birds were seen between 3-10.9. The bird was still there on 4.10 (J.Martí Aledo, T.Montràs), whilst the Llobregat delta juvenile was also seen on 3.10 (F.López).The Llobregat delta juvenile was seen again on 5.10 (see athumbnail here) (F.Pujol, R.Gutiérrez, F.López et al) and the Aiguamolls one was also there as well until 6.10 (J Martí). Llobregat bird last seen on 7.10 (F.López).A 2nd juvenile was seen at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona from 16-18.10 (J.Martí Aledo) the previous one (diferring in some plumage features) was last seen on 7.10 (J.Martí). In the Mediterranean, there have been, therefore, 2 at Aiguamolls, 3 at Llobregat and 2 at Valencia this autum.One was found on 22.10 at Embalse de los Molinos, Tenerife, Canary Islands (Tony Clarke). Description already sent to CR/SEO. On 20.10 there was one at laguna de Traba, Laxe, A Coruña (José Luís Rabuñal Patiño). It was in company of a Semipalmeated Sandpiper (!!).On 26.10 there appeared a different bird at Tenerife, Canary Islands (Tony Clarke).

Temminck's Stint Calidris temminckii. A bird arrived at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà on 6.10 (Jordi Martí Aledo).There was one at camí dels Polls, Mallorca, on 9.10 (Lalo Ventoso).There was one at Marjals de Sueca, PN Albufera de València on 11.10 (Bosco Díes).There was one at el Matà, PN Aiguamolls, Girona, on 14-15.10 (T.Montràs, J.Martí). Another was at Brazo del Este, Sevilla, on 11.10 (Ian Kinley).

Long-tailed Skua* Stercorarius longicaudus. Two 1st winters were seen flying NW along the coast over coastal meadows at Lluanco, Gozón, Asturies on 11.10 (Elias García Sánchez, PJ Menéndez).

Sabine's Gull Larus sabini. There were four 1st winters migating west off Punta de la Vaca, Gozón, Asturies on 17.10 (E.García Sánchez). There were two adults 9,5 and 16,2 miles offshore N of Xixón, Asturies on 19.10 (E.García Sánchez and 13 other observers of COA).

Ring-billed Gull* Larus delawarensis. A 2nd winter bird was at marisma de Ramallosa, Baiona, Pontevedra, on 15.10 (Adolfo Lomeña).

Royal Tern* Sterna maxima. An adult winter  bird was seen and photographed at playa de los Lances, Tarifa, Cádiz, on 2.10 (Pablo Fernández García, J.Diego Inac, S.Pérez Gil, A.Castilla, M.García, L.García, S.Schindler, P.Kanuch, T. del Campo Olmos).See a thumbnail here

Roseate Tern* Sterna dougallii. Recently incorporated rarity to the Spanish needing-homologation bird list. Mediterranean basin record: a winter plumaged adult was seen in company of 124 Common Terns (Sterna hirundo) and 16 Sandwich Terns (Sterna sandvicensis) at Peñíscola harbour, Castelló, on 4.10 (Víctor J.Hernández).

White-winged Black Tern Chlidonias leucopterus. There was a juvenile with two Whiskered Terns Chlidonias hybrida also juveniles at Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta, Barcelona, on 3.10 (R.Gutiérrez, F.X.Santaeufemia).On 5.10 there was an adult (A.Martínez-Vilalta; FX Santaeufemia) and a juvenile (R.Gutiérrez) at the same place.There were two at Canal Vell, Ebre Delta, Tarragona bby 8.10 (D.Bigas).There was a juvenile at marjals d'Almenara on 14.10 (Victor J Hernández)

Pallid Swift. Apus pallidus. Extralimital records. 4th record for Asturies: a bird was at Viyadún, Castripol, from 21-22.9 (E García Sánchez, A González Losa, MA Fernández Pajuelo et al / COA).

Richard's Pipit* Anthus richardi. At PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, there was a bird at Can Comes meadows area on 6.10 (Oriol Clarabuch, Toni Alonso).There was another bird at the same place on 16.10 (Xesco Macià). One was heard typically calling while flying over Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València, on 13.10 (Marcial Yuste). Just before seeing the Long-billed Dowitcher of Ebre Delta (see above) David Bigas managed to find one Richard's Pipit at Panissos ricefields, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 17-18.10 (David Bigas).There was one at Galea golf course, Getxo, Bizkaia on 22.10 (Gorka Ocio, Juan García Astigarraga).

BLACK-THROATED THRUSH* Turdus ruficollis atrogularis. One 1st winter bird was seen and heard calling at Barra del Trabucador, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 12.10 (Steve West). If accepted, this will be the 1st for the whole country and the record coincides with a set of both American and Eastern origin vagrants in the NE.

Siberian Chiffchaff* Phylloscopus collybita tristis. A bird was ringed on 17.10 at Tiana, Barcelona (Juan Carlos Fernández Ordóñez).Another bird was ringed at the same place on 20.10 (Raül Calderón, Jordi Giró, Francesc Giró)

Iberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus ibericus. Extralimital record of this poorly known species. A bird was trapped and ringed at Canal Vell biological station, Ebre delta, Tarragona, on 13.1o (S.Sales, N.Rodríguez). Furthermore, the bird eventually called and this was a further confirmation of its identity.

Northern Great Shrike Lanius excubitor. Rare overwinterer in the N. The species is regular in Asturies every winter and a few birds are recorded: there was a bird at Antromero , Gozón, on 17.10 (Elías García Sánchez / CR-SEO).

Rosy Starling* Sturnus roseus. One was reported from Marjals de Silla, PN Albufera de València, València, on 16.10 (Fco. Javier Garcia y Gans).

Great White Egret Egretta alba at Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, València (the 'Moro marsh') this month. (Photos © Marcial Yuste). This species is no longer a true rarity in the NE and it has even colonized the Ebre delta, Tarragona as a breeding bird. However, october remains the month with a higher number of observations (see the enclosed chronicle).
