Recent Reports: Latest sightings AUGUST 2002 * rarities needing homologation by the CR/SEO

Storm Petrel Oceanites oceanicus. AFRICAN DWARF BITTERN* Ixobrychus sturmii. An immature was found at Erjos Ponds, Tenerife, on 23.8 (Rami Lindroos, Lauri Nikkinen, William Velmala). There is one sole accepted record for Spain from Gran Canaria in 21,25 and 30.1.2000 (Ardeola 49 (1) 2002). Western Reef Heron* Egretta gularis. A dark phase bird that appeared on 18.7 was still on 1.8 at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (F.Blanch, D.Bigas/PNDE).The bird was photographed on 5.8 (see thumbnail here) and it is thought to be the individual present in the area last year (F.Blanch, D.Bigas, O.Clarabuch, E.Guinart, R.Gutiérrez).See a special photopage dealing with this bird.Still at the same place by 20.8 (D.Bigas) Presumed hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret* Egretta gularis x garzetta. One bird showing 'piano' wings and mixture of black and white plumage plus mixed structure was seen at Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona, on 9.8 (David Bigas). Still at the same place by 20.8 (D.Bigas). See a thumbnail here. Another possible hybrid was at Desembocadura del Guadalhorce, Málaga, on 24.8 (Paul Hicks). Great White Egret Egretta alba. Seven pairs finally bred at Ebre delta, Tarragona, the only Spanish breeding location for the species (David Bigas/PNDE).One was at Llobregat delta on 20.8 (F.López)One was also at Llobregat delta, Barcelona, on 28.8 (J.Castelló, F.López).Another was at Marjal del Moro (Moro marsh) the same day (M.Yuste).On 27.8 two birds were seen flying over Sant Andreu, Barcelona (Jordi Clavell), perhaps the same found at Llobregat delta on 1.9 (Joan Castelló) Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. 23 pairs finally bred at Ebre delta, Tarragona, one of the two only Spanish breeding locations for the species (David Bigas/PNDE). There was one bird at Tancat de la Ratlla, Albufera de València, on 6.8 (J.I. Dies, B.Dies, E.Guinart, R.Gutiérrez).One juvenile was seen at el Matà, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona, on 19.8 (Berto Minobis). There were about 35 near Canal Vell and 13 more at Buda Island area at Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona, on 20.8 (D.Bigas, Raimundo, R.Gutiérrez, E.Guinart). A few hundreds of pairs have bred this year in Doñana, were several have been colour-ringed (J.Figuerola)190 birds were counted at Isla Menor ricefields, Sevilla, on 20.8 (Paco Chiclana) Yellow-billed Stork Mycteria ibis. E SPECIES (escape).On 22.8, there was a bird at Tancat de la Ratlla, Silla, Albufera de València (Javier Garcia i Gains, Bosco Dies). On 1.8 there were 2 birds at Salades de Mont-Ral, Huesca/Lleida (Steve West). These birds could be well also hybrids with Egyptian goose (see below) but not the same birds of Ebre delta since both observations were simultaneous. The bird reported earlier at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca, was still there on 9.8 (Jorge Garzón).Still there on 14.8 (Jordi Sala).Still there on 21.8 (Miguel A.Rouco)On 22.8, a juvenile appeared at Estany d'Europa and Cortalet areas, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (J.Martí Aledo, A.Ollé, T.Montràs).There were first 5 then 3 at Salobrar de Campos, Mallorca on 28-30.8 (Miguel Angel Reus). Ruddy Shelduck x Egyptian Goose hybrid Tadorna ferruginea x Alopochen aegyptiacus* There were 2 juvenile individuals at Ebre delta, Tarragona from 23.7, when found at Buda Island (David Bigas, A.Cama, J.Piccardo/PNDE) then moved to Tancada saltpans on 27.7 (D.Bigas) where photographed by the author and present at least until 6.8 (Pau Esteban).See a thumbnail here Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca. Two birds, at least one presumed adult female, were seen on 11.8 at bassa del Gall Marí, Parc Natural Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (J.Martí Aledo, M.Jiménez, X.del Acebo). See a thumbnail here. Scaup Aythya marila. The bird reported at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca, some months ago is still there on 21.8, now in eclipse plumage (Miguel A.Rouco). Smew* Mergellus albellus. A female, absolutely out of season, was relocated at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca, on 21.8 where it had been previously found on 4.8 (M.A.Rouco; Guillermo Hernández). Passage records: 2 birds at Mas Bellesguard fields, Aiguamolls de l'Empordà NP, Girona, on 29.8 (Alex Ollé) Pacific Golden Plover* Pluvialis fulva. An adult moulting from summer to winter plumage but still largely on breeding plumage was foundd at maresma de les Filipines, Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 28.8 (F.López, J.Castelló; R.Armada, X.Larruy, J.Becarés, X.Macià, R.Gutiérrez). On 21.8 there were two birds at marjal de l'Albufera de València (Bosco Dies). On 23.8 there was one bird at Filipines reserve, Llobregat Delta, Barcelona (Joan Castelló) Pectoral Sandpiper* Calidris melanotos. A bird was apparently seen and photographed at Embalse de la Sotonera, Aragon on 2.8 (Nick Bray). There were four individuals at Brazo del Este, Sevilla, on 14.8 (Paco Chiclana).On 18.8 there were four birds (4 adults and 1 juvenile) at Estany d'Europa, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (J.Martí Aledo i M.Jiménez). At L'Albufera de València there were up to three birds on 16.8, two at tancat de la Llonga and another at tancat de la Ratlla (Bosco Díes, Nacho Díes). A bird in summer plumage was seen at Fangar bay, Ebre delta, Tarragona, by mid month, e.g. 16.8 (David Bigas; Marc Peris et al) Long-tailed Skua* Stercorarius longicaudus. On 18.8, during a seawatch 10 miles off Estaca de Vares, A Coruña, Galicia, 2 birds were seen (Erva, Hábitat, SGHN, SEO, Cemma)Inland, at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca, there was a juvenile on 22.8 (J.J.Ramos Encalado).Still there on 23.8 (G.Hernández, JJ Ramos Encalado, C.Aldea, V.López).There are photos of this bird in the Azud de Riolobos website here (opens in another window). Still there on 25.8 (V.López) Sabine's Gull Larus sabini. On 18.8, during a seawatch 10 miles off Estaca de Vares, A Coruña, Galicia, there were 30 adults in breeding plumage (Erva, Hábitat, SGHN, SEO, Cemma) Caspian Tern Sterna caspia. Extralimital location. An adult was seen at Santander bay on 24.8 (Manuel Alcántara, Fernando Arce). It is almost an accidental in the cantabrian coast in NE Spain. Lesser-Crested Tern Sterna bengalensis. On 2.8 there was one adult bird at playa de los Lances, Cádiz (Ernest F.J. Garcia) White-winged Black Tern Chlidonias leucopterus. There was a 2nd summer bird at Canal Vell lagoon, Ebre delta, Tarragona, on 4.8 (O.Clarabuch, D.Bigas). On 6.8, an adult beggining moult was seen at tancat de la Llonga, Albufera de València (J.I.Dies, R.Gutiérrez, E.Guinart)There was one adult at estany del Cortalet, PN Aiguamolls, Girona, on 4.08 (A. Ollé, J.Martí Aledo i M. Jiménez)At the same place, there was one adult on 22.8 (J.Martí Aledo, X. del Acebo).There was one at Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 28.8 (F.López, J.Castelló). Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola. On 15.8, there was one bird at El Matà area, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (M.Hervé).At the same place, another, or the same bird, was seen on 22.8 (Xesco Macià, Alex Ollé).On 31.8 one was ringed at Marjal del Moro, Sagunt, València (Marcial Yuste).
