Recent Reports: Latest sightings JUNE 2002 (Provisional) * rarities needing homologation by the CR/SEO
Wilson's Storm Petrel* Oceanites oceanicus. A bird was seen from playa de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia, on 16.6 (Antonio Sandoval). Great White Egret Egretta alba. One was at Brazo del Este, Sevilla on 1.6 (Paco Chiclana).One non-breeding plumage individual was seen on 17.6 at Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta, Barcelona (R.Gutiérrez, F.López et al) Western-Reef Heron* Egretta gularis gularis. An adult bird showing typical features of the dark phase was seen on 20.6 at Amarilla Golf, Tenerife, Canary Islands, where it possibly had been present for a number of days (Tony Clarke).The hybrid gularis x garzetta reported in previous months remained at desembocadura del Guadalhorce, Málaga, on 23.6 (Andy Paterson).On 23.6 there was an adult dark phase gularis at Plaiaundi, Irun, Txingudi, Gipuzkoa (David Calleja, Alberto Luengo). The previous days, Mikel Etxaniz had seen what could have been an hybrid gularis x garzetta in the same place. In the South, there was a bird at laguna de Tarelo, La Algaida, Cádiz, on 21.6 (Ken Lossy). Marabou* Leptoptilos crumeniferus. A bird has appeared at Salobrar de Campos, Mallorca, on 12.6 (Pere Joan Garcias Salas)The bird is an ESCAPE from the Natura Park at Mallorca as confirmed to Jordi Clavell by phone. On 15.6 it was still at Salobrar de Campos without being retrapped (Pere Joan Garcia Salas) Marbled Teal Marmaronetta angustirostris. Observations from the northernmost European limit of distribution. At Racó de l'Olla, Albufera de València, there were up to four males altogether on 5.6 (J.Ignacio Díes). See the enclosed thumbnail. A pair could also be present at Marjal del Moro, Sagunt València, on 1.6 (Marcial Yuste).A bird was at EDDAR of Muro 'hotspot' at Mallorca on 8.6 (Maties Rebassa). Ruddy Shelduck* Tadorna ferruginea. There were two at the EDDAR of Muro 'hotspot' at Mallorca on 8.6 (Maties Rebassa). They were in company of the hybrid Ruddy Shelduck x Egyptian Goose featured last month. 3 birds were at es Ras, near Turó des Blat, S'Albufera de Mallorca, Mallorca on 10.6 (Rafel Mas) Scaup Aythya marila. Unseasonal record. The male seen initially at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca on 19.5 was relocated on 14.6 (Miguel Rouco). An imnmature bird was seen within a party of 68 Griffon Vultures Gyps fulvus at Refugio de Rapaces de Montejo de la Vega, Segovia on 10.6 (Fidel José Fernández y Fernández-Arroyo).In early June, a warden from Ayllon mountains, Guadalajara, referred to a probable Rüppell's vulture present near the town of Villanueva de Alcorón, Guadalajara, in company of Griffons (Rafa Barrientos). This sighting, however, could not be confirmed. Black-shouldered Kite Elanus caeruleus. A bird was at vega del rio Cubia, conceyu de Grau, Asturies, on 25.6.2002. It is the first for Asturies and a very far North record. There are photos. (David Pascual Stevens). Red-Footed Falcon Falco vespertinus. A 2nd cy female was seen at marjals de Cullera, València, on 6.6 (Bosco Díes) Eleonora's Falcon Falco eleonorae A pale phase bird was at Llobregat delta on 4.6 at ca l'Arana beach (X.Larruy, Q.Bach, F.González-Prat) Inland records: There were 10 individuals at Cuenca on 22.6 (I.Torres, J.Fernández, JM Andrés, K. de Dios).There were also 13 (!) at laguna de Talayuelas, Cueca, feeding on insects on 22.6 too. . The birds have been seen in that area for three consecutive years (Rafael Muñoz Bastit). There were 4 pale phase birds at Talayuelas, Cuenca, on 29.6 (R.Muñoz) Baillon's Crake Porzana pusilla. Few records, we publish all received sightings. On 23.6, there was an adult breeding plumaged bird at Plaiaundi, Irún, Txingudi bay, Gipuzkoa (David Calleja, Mikel Guereñu) Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis. There were three birds at Racó de l'Olla reserve, Albufera de València, on 25.6 (Bosco & Nacho Díes). See thumbnail here. Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii. A bird was seen at Ebre Delta, Tarragona, on 5.6 (David Bigas et al) Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea. Accidental in the Mediterranean. A 1st summer bird was at Racó de l'Olla reserve, Albufera de València NP, València, on 14.6 (J.I.Díes, J.L.Terrasa). There was one at the same place on 25.6 (Bosco Díes). Perhaps the same individual? Caspian Tern Sterna caspia. Extralimital record. A bird was seen at Paredes, Pontevedra, on 5.6. It might well be the only recent record for Galicia in the last years (Jaime Sainz) Lesser-Crested Tern Sterna bengalensis. An adult pair was seen amongst Sandwich Terns Sterna sandvicensis at Ebre Delta, Tarragona, on 5.6, the same day in which a Roseate Tern was recorded (David Bigas et al). White-winged Black Tern Chlidonias leucopterus. Rather late record. There was one bird at the EDDAR of Muro 'hotspot' at Mallorca on 8.6 (Maties Rebassa).An adult summer plumaged bird was seen on 22.6 at maresma de les Filipines, Llobregat delta reserves, Barcelona (Ferran López). Little Swift Apus affinis* and White-rumped Swift Apus caffer. On 27.6 and in the very same place, at Bolonia. Cádiz, there were 2 Littles and 5 White-rumped swifts (Andy Paterson, Mike Clark, Andrés Paterson). Rosy
