Pied-Billed Grebe* Podilymbus podiceps. The bird found last year is still at laguna de Traba, Laxe, on c.1.2 (José Luis Rabuñal Patiño). Another bird, possibly that formerly reported at La Grajera reservoir, La Rioja, was found at Ebro river, Logroño, on 28.1 (Javier Robres) See a thumbnail here.Still there on 9.2 (Fernando Ruiz)

Slavonian Grebe* Podiceps auritus. Two birds were found at Ebre delta, Tarragona one at Alfacs and another at Goleró on 3.2 (José Luís Copete & Ramon Servitje). One still on 10.2 (D.Bigas, F.López, X.Macià, X.Larruy, J.Jofre, A.López, Ponç Feliu et al). On 10.2 there was one bird at Bahia de Santander, Cantabria (José Antonio Maroñas)There was a moulting bird at Pedreña, Santander on 25.2 (F.Javier de la Cruz).

Great White Egret Egretta alba. There were 3 birds in different Extemadura reservoirs on 2.2 (Javier Briz).One bird was at Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta on 7.2 (Ricard Gutiérrez).There were 23 at Albufera de València on 3.2 but only 9 on 14.2 and 2 on 19.2 (Fco. Javier García y Gans).There were six individuals with 14 Black Storks Ciconia nigra at Río Grande and Guadalhorce, Málaga on 15.2 (Blas López). Another was at Marjales de Almenara, Castelló on 9.2 (Víctor J. Hernández y Benjamín Pérez) and two at marjals de Pego-Oliva the same day (Fco. Javier García y Gans) while the species remained common in Ebre Delta, Tarragona with over 100 individuals (D.Bigas/PNDE). Four were in N Cáceres on 14.2 (Javier Briz) There were two individuals at Utxesa reservoir, Lleida, on 16.2 (Emma Guinart et al). A bird was at caño de Guadiamar, Doñana, on 28.2 (José Manuel Reyes Páez) and there were c.20 at caño Guadiamar on 10-15.2 (Christian Dronneau)

Egretta garzetta x gularis. The bird reported at Albufera de València was still there on 13.2 (Fco. Javier García y Gans)Still ther on 19.2 (Fco. Javier García y Gans)

Western Reef Heron* Egretta gularis gularis. A bird was at Isla Mayor, Sevilla, on 14.2 (Jorge Garzón,Mario Martín, Paco Chiclana). See a thumbnail here.Another different individual (told by plumage) was at Veta la Palma, Doñana, on 27.2 (Paco Chiclana, David Muñoz)

Sacred Ibis* Threskiornis aethiopicus. Probable escape. A bird was at camí des polls, S'Albufera de Mallorca, Balears on 2.2 (Maties Rebassa)Another different immature bird was at the same place on 27.2 (Rafel Mas)

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. There were 55 at Brazo del Este, Sevilla on 1.2 (Paco Chiclana)There was one bird at Santander Bay on 16.2 (Angel Herrero and Joaquin Bedia). There were 160+ birds in two roosts around Doñana on 10-15.2 (Christian Dronneau)

Yellow-billed Stork Mycteria ibis. Escape. After two years there, the bird present in l'Albufera de València was still there on 10.2 (J.Ignacio Dies). See a photopage of this bird in the Dies bros. website (opens in another browser)

White Pelican* Pelecanus onocrotalus. On 28.2 there were 3 at Cerrado Garrido, Doñana (José Manuel Reyes Páez). These birds might be the same observed in the area at least since year 2000 and thus should be considered of dubious origin (cat. D, editorial comment)

Barnacle Goose* Branta leucopsis. The bird featured in the november page at Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, is still there on 3.2 (F.López, X.Macià, M.Iranzo).Last sighting of that bird on 10.2, gone by 12.2 (Jordi Martí/PNAE et al) At Embalse de Sierra Brava, Cáceres, Extremadura, there were 2 birds on 12.2 (J.M.Traverso).

Brent Goose Branta bernicla. There was one individual of the bernicla race at Villafáfila on 8.2 (Alfonso Rodrigo, Laura Anton)

White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons. The 1st winter found on 17.11 at Filipines marsh, Llobregat Delta, was still there on 22.2 (F.López, F.X.Santaeufemia, P.Bescós)On 8.2 there was one at Villafáfila, Zamora (Alfonso Rodrigo, Laura Antón). At embalse de Portaje, C-N Cáceres, there was one presumed ssp. albifrons bird on 7.2. In the same place there were 3 on 11.1 (Javie Prieta). An adult was at estuario de Miño, A Guarda, Pontevedra on 10.2 (Rafa Salvadores, Tito Salvadores, J.M. Mariño e Miguel Conde).At Embalse de Sierra Brava, Cáceres, Extremadura, there were 3 birds on 12.2 (J.M.Traverso). 

Bean Goose Anser fabalis. One was at Embalse de Sierra Brava, Cáceres, Extremadura, on 6.2 (J.M.Traverso).

Pink-footed Goose* Anser brachyrhynchus. On 19.2 there was a bird in the middle of a 81 Greylags A.anser flock at Balsa de Zolina, Valle de Aranguren, Navarra (Gabi Berasategui, Gorka Gorospe). It was probably there already on 14.2 (G.Berasategui)

Egyptian Goose* Alopochen aegyptiacus. Six birds were at bassa des reg, Son ferriol, Mallorca, Balears, on 2.2 (five on 27.1) (Lalo Ventoso)Four were at the Depuradora, Mallorca on 27.2 but behaviour observed suggested escape origin (Rafel Mas)

Ruddy Shelduck* Tadorna ferruginea. At Salobrar de Campos, Mallorca,  there were two unringed males on 6.2 (Emilio lago,Toño Lado, J.M. Martinez, L.Ventoso). Another different individual was there on 14.2 (Lalo Ventoso, E.Lago, T.Lado). There were two presumed escapes at  Torre del Mar ,Málaga, on 4-5.2 (Miguel Heredia)On 25.2 there were four at depuradora de Sa Ràpita, Mallorca (Pere Joan Garcias Salas)

Green-winged Teal* Anas carolinensis. The male found on 3.1 at O Grove was still there on 3.2 (Xurxo Pinheiro)Another male was found at Balsa de Zolina, Valle de Aranguren, Navarra, on 24.2 (Alberto Lizarraga, Gorka Gorospe)

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca. On 13.2 there was a male at El Portil, Huelva (Paco Chiclana). On 3.2 there were c.3 at graveras del Porcal, Madrid ((Miguel Juan, Delfín González, X.Larruy, E.de Juana, J.L. Rabuñal, E.García, R.Gutiérrez et al) and one at laguna de San Juan, Chinchón, Madrid (J.Luis Rabuñal). A male was at Parque Isabel la Católica, Xixón, on 4.2 (Alfredo Hernández)A male was at Mar de Ontígola, Madrid, on 23.2 (Rafael Torralba/ SAO)

Ring-necked Duck* Aythya collaris. At Graveras del Porcal, Madrid, the female found on 27.1 was still there on 3.2 (Miguel Juan, Delfín González, X.Larruy, E.de Juana, J.L. Rabuñal, E.García, R.Gutiérrez et al). There were TWO males on 6.2 (Nacho F. Aransay, Oscar Frias, JC Atienza), so three Ring-neckeds in Madrid all in all.One female with 9 Tufted Ducks Aythya fuligula on 8.2 in the reservoir of Vila-Gudim (Vilagudín), Ordes-Cerzeda (Galiza/Galicia) (grupo OUREOL / STRIX; Marcial, Víctor, Seve, Fernando, Nerea, Luis, Bruno, Suso, Damiám). Still the two females featured in january at laguna de Traba, A Coruña, on 3.2 (Pablo y Antonio Gutiérrez, see photo below)
















Eider Somateria mollissima. An adult female was at estuario de Miño, A Guarda, Pontevedra on 10.2 (Rafa Salvadores, Tito Salvadores, J.M. Mariño e Miguel Conde).

Goldeneye Bucephala clangula.  An adult female was at estuario de Miño, A Guarda, Pontevedra on 10.2 (Rafa Salvadores, Tito Salvadores, J.M. Mariño e Miguel Conde).

Goosander* Mergus merganser. First bird reported in the Mediterranean this winter: a 1st winter male was seen at Fangar bay, Ebre delta, Tarragona, on 5.2 (David Bigas).

WHITE-TAILED EAGLE Haliaeetus albicilla. FIRST FOR A LIST IN SPAIN. An immature bird in its second plumage (now in its 3rd calendar year) was lingering in Mallorca island mountains at least from 10.2 when reported as an unindentified raptor to local e-mail list 'Forum-Aus'. Then, a photograph was available on 22.2 (Joan Mario Rebassa; M.Rebassa, B.Ramis) which clearly showed the bird crucial characteristics. See a thumbnail here.

Allen's Gallinule* Porphyrula alleni. The bird that had been brought to captivity in Alicante was released into the wild once recovered in El Hondo Natural Park, Crevillent, Alacant, by mid last week (5-7.2.02). No further data available (Elías Gomis)Thumbnail available here

Crested Coot Fulica cristata. There were 6 birds at Llucio de la
Dehesa de Abajo, Sevilla, of which only three wore a pvc ring indicating reintroduction scheme origin (Paco Chiclana)There were two at Veta Hornito, Doñana, on 28.2 (José Manuel Reyes Páez). On 10-15.2, there were 3 at Caño Guadiamar near Centro Valverde and flooded
area near El Rocio, Doñana, Huelva (Christian Dronneau)

Terek Sandpiper* Xenus cinereus. There was a bird at Sacti Petri, Sevilla on 2.2 (SEO/Sevilla)

Sabine's Gull Larus sabini. Three birds (one 1st winter) were seen from Cabo Corrubedo, A Coruña, with strong SW winds during a couple of seawatching hours on 3.2 (Xurxo Pinheiro)

Ring-billed Gull* Larus delawarensis. Two birds at Galicia: one from ria de Ares first seen on 27.1 (see thumbnail here and in January page) and still present on 6.2 (Pablo y Antonio Gutiérrez). And another at Ria de Ferrol still there on 6.2 (Pablo y Antonio Gutiérrez). There was one at Parque Isabel la Católica, Xixón, on 4.2 (Alfredo Hernández). There were 3 2nd winter individuals at Peninsula de la Magdalena, bahia de Santander, Cantabria on 26.2 (Fernando Arce, Francisco Javier de la Cruz)

Iceland Gull* Larus glaucoides. A 3rd winter bird was reported at Bermeo harbour, Euskadi on 28.2 (Jon Hidalgo)

Richard's Pipit* Anthus richardi. On 6.2, during a severe wind gale (up to 160 km/h winds) at Ebre Delta, Tarragona, a bird took refuge just in front of the window of the Canal Vell Biological Station from where it was observed (David Bigas) .There were 7 birds at laguna de Vixan, P.N. 
Corrubedo, Ribeira, A Coruña on 3.2 and 2 on 10.2(Xurxo Pinheiro). Another bird from Ebre Delta: one individual was seen at Niño Perdido marshes on 14.2 (David Bigas, M.A. Franch)

Twite* Carduelis flavirostris. PUTATIVE 2nd-3rd FOR SPAIN IF CONFIRMED. A relatively tame bird was seen at close range in the outskirts of Gernika, Euskadi (Jon Hidalgo). There are old reports of twite as a rare overwintering bird in the N coast and a sole accepted record.
