Red-throated Diver Gavia stellata. Inland record. One 1st calendar-year bird was at Embalse de Alarcón, Cuenca on 21.1 (Víctor J. Hernández y Benjamín Pérez).

Pied-Billed Grebe* Podilymbus podiceps. The bird found last year is still at laguna de Traba, Laxe, on 23.1 (Adolfo Lomeña, Victor López i Albert Burgas).

Slavonian Grebe* Podiceps auritus. The bird featured last month was still at El Abra, Gexto, Bizkaia, on 1.1 (Gorka Ocio, Juan Hormaechea, JM Soler, Miguel de las Heras).At Ria de Ortigueira, A Coruña, Galicia, there were four on 4.1 (José Miguel Alonso Pumar)but two on 13.1 (Pablo Gutiérrez). The birds featured last month at Santoña remained there on 3.1 (Miguel A Rouco) but there were two on 6.1 (Gorka Ocio)and four on 11.1 (Juan Manuel Pérez de Ana),3-4 birds at Santoña on 13.1 (Club Ornitológico de La Rioja) but 8 on 31.1 (Juan Manuel Pérez de Ana). One bird was off Tordera river mouth, Blanes, Girona on 20.1 (Xavier Larruy, Juan Becarés)One was off Parc Natural Aiguamolls de l'Empordà on 23.1 (O.Clarabuch, I.Batet, JR Sanz, J.Martí).

Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus. About 1800 birds were in a single flock (the largest recorded this year so far) off playa de La Punta, l'Albufera de Valencia, València (J.Ignacio Díes). Amongst them there were less than 20 Mediterranean Shearwaters Puffinus yelkouan (J.I.Dies). In turn, on 20.1 there were only 8 mauretanicus for 12 yelkouan at Cap de Creus, Girona, another pre-breeding site for the species in NE Spain (Ponç Feliu).New concentrations off Castelló de la Plana:737 mauretanicus and 113 yelkouan were reported from Sierra d'Irta coast (between Alcalà de Xivert and Penyíscola) (Victor, J Hernández).

Great-White Egret Egretta alba There was one bird at Remolar-Filipines reserve, Llobregat delta on 2.2 (Jordi Clavell, Ferran López).There were two at Tancat de la Ratlla, Albufera de València on 1.1 (F.Javier Garcia i Gans).The Llobregat delta bird was still there on 7-10.1 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Ferran López; David Bigas, Armand Ramal).At Extremadura, there were a couple in the north lagoons by 5.1 (Javier Briz)Many at Ebre delta, Tarragona all month long (PNDE)At ria del capitán, PN Oyambre, Cantabria there was a bird on 14.1 which had been seen intermitently since 7.12.2001 (F.Arce, A.Herrero, R.Balbás). Five birds were at desembocadura del Guadalhorce on 24.1 (José A. Cortes)

Little x Western Reef Egrets Egretta garzetta x gularis. A bird, presumed hybrid amongst both species was found near Albufera de València on 25.1 (Nacho i Bosco Díes).Another bird could have been present at desembocadura del Guadalhorce, Málaga on 25.1 (Blas López)

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. Overwintering birds: about 60 birds at Canal Vell lagoon roost on 17.1 (PNDE) and 75 at La Rocina, Huelva, on 24.1 (Paco Chiclana)

Canada Goose* Branta canadensis. On 12.1 there was one 'small' bird at Embalse de Sierra Brava, Extremadura, probably arrived there after a cold weather episode (John Muddeman) but now appears to be a hybrid Barnacle x Canada goose . See thumbnail of a sketch here

Barnacle Goose* Branta leucopsis. The bird featured in the november page in Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, is still there on 1.1 (Jordi Martí, Víctor Estrada) to 20.1 (Emma Guinart, Xevi Puig) and the end of the month. Another was at El Abra, Getxo,on 1.1 too (Gorka Ocio, Juan Hormaechea, JM Soler, Miguel de las Heras).Four were at Embalse de Cabredo, Navarra on 7.1. One was yellow-pvc colour-ringed in its right leg (Javier López de Luzuriaga).Another two were near Doñana National Park on 12.1 (Paco Chiclana)Seven ! birds were at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca on 19.1 (Francisco Cosme Muñoz). On 12.1 there were 2 ad. + 1 1st w at Embalse de Sierra Brava, Extremadura, probably arrived there after a cold weather episode (John Muddeman)  .2 birds at Laguna de Boada, Boada de Campos, Palencia on 27.01(Alfonso Rodrigo, M.A.Garcia Matellanes)

Brent Goose Branta bernicla. There was a bird present at RN Marismas de Santoña y Noja, Cantabria on 3.1 (Miguel A.Rouco).Another was at  laguna grande, RN Lagunas de Villafáfila, Zamora on 4.1 (Delfín González)A 1st winter bernicla bird was at Salina Grande, Villafáfila, Zamora, on 5.1 (Alfonso Rodrigo, M.Angel Matallanes)Another was near Doñana National Park on 12.1 (Paco Chiclana). Two were at Santoña on 13.1 (Ignacio Gámez)On 21.1 there was one at ria de Noia, A Coruña (Enrique Martínez Rodríguez).One 1st winter bird was seen at badia del Fangar, delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 24.1 (David Bigas)

Bean Goose Anser fabalis. An increasingly rare species. We welcome observations of this formerly regular bird.At Villafáfila, Zamora, c.4000 birds overwintered until 1981 but 21 in  1997, 9 in 1998, 16 in 1999 , 7 in 2000 and none in 2001  One rossicus bird was at laguna grande and one fabalis was at laguna de Barillo, RN Lagunas de Villafáfila, Zamora on 4.1 (Delfín González)Another was at Villafranco del Guadalquivir, Parque Natural de Doñana, Huelva, on 13.1.02 (Daniel L Huertas). On 12.1 there was one 1st winter bird at Embalse de Sierra Brava, Extremadura, probably arrived there after a cold weather episode (John Muddeman). 

Pink-footed Goose* Anser brachyrhynchus. On 12.1 there was one adult bird at Embalse de Sierra Brava, Extremadura, probably arrived there after a cold weather episode (John Muddeman). An adult was at embalse de Cecebre, A Coruña, on 20.1(Xurxo Piñeiro, Manolo Alonso)

White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons. The 1st winter bird first seen on 17.11.01, was still at Remolar-Filipines reserve, Llobregat delta on 12.1.02 (Ferran López, R.Gutiérrez,E.Guinart,A.Ramal, J.Castelló,O.Muntané... ) to 21.1 at least (Pedro Bescós) .The bird misidentified last month at Santoña was still there on 3.1 (Miguel A. Rouco) and 13.1 (Club Ornitológico La Rioja). There was one at laguna grande de Villafáfila, Zamora on 4.1 . A bird claimed as a leucistic Greylag goose there could well be an aberrant domestic/escaped Swan GooseAnser cygnoides according to some vidcaps of (Delfín González, ed. comment)At laguna de la Nava, Fuentes de Nava, Palencia, there was an adult flavirostris bird on 4.1 (Jorge Garzón, Andrea). Two were amongst Greylags at Campos de Revellinos, Villafáfila, Zamora on 5.1 (Alfonso Rodrigo, M.Angel Matallanes) From 13-19.01.02,  one adult was at estuario del Miño, A Guarda, Pontevedra    (Tito y Rafael Salvadores, Francisco Arcos, Alberto Gil, César Vidal). There were 2 1st winters on 12.1 at Embalse de Sierra Brava, Extremadura, probably arrived there after a cold weather episode (John Muddeman). 4 birds were at Laguna de Boada, Boada de Campos, Palencia on 27.01(Alfonso Rodrigo, M.A.Garcia Matellanes)

Egyptian Goose* Alopochen aegyptiacus. There were four individuals at Bassa de s'Aeroport de Mallorca, Illes Balears, on 2.1 (Lalo Ventoso) where two had been seen on 27.12 (see decemeber report).There were nine unringed of these geese at Son Ferriol pond, Mallorca on 8.1 all behaving wild (Lalo Ventoso). 

Green-winged Teal* Anas carolinensis. A male was found at A Fianteira, O Grove, Pontevera on 3.1 (César Vidal)From 15-16.01.02,  an adult male was seen at estuario del Miño, A Guarda, Pontevedra (Adolfo Lomeña, Albert Burgas & Cesar Vidal -only the 16-).Still there on 24.1 (Tito Salvadores, Adolfo Lomeña, César Vidal)

Mandarin Duck* Aix galericulata. A female appeared (as almost every winter the last years) at Graugés lake, Avià, Barcelona in the Pyrenees on 2.2 (Pere Aymerich, Joan Santandreu; communicated by Lluís Gustamante).At Parque Juan Carlos I, Madrid city, a male arrived on 7.1 behaving wild  but turned up to be a ringed and then an escaped bird(Delfín González)

Scaup Aythya marila. On 12.1 there was a male at charca de Lancho (Javier Atrio, Marcelino Cardalliaguet y Santiago Villa). A pair was seen at ria de Arousa, Pontevedra on 27.1 (Rafael y Tito Salvadores Ramos, César Vidal)

Ring-necked Duck* Aythya collaris. A female was seen in a small pond near Vilavedeye, Castropol, Asturies, on 5.1. It could have been there for months as this is a scantly visited location, c.100 km from regular wintering hotspots for the species in central Asturies (where some ring-neckeds present from october, Elias García Sánchez, C.M.Álvarez, J.A.García, D.López, G.Sánchez). At Gravera del Porcal, Madrid, an adult male was found on 6.1, the 1st record for that community (Delfín González, Miguel Juan Martínez) still there on 20.1 (Delfín González, Santiago Villa).  At laguna de Traba, Laxe, A Coruña there were a 1st winter on 6.1 (Xurxo Piñeiro, Carlos Luciarte) and two females on 23.1 (Adolfo Lomeña, Victor López i Albert Burgas).At Gravera del Porcal, Madrid, there was not only the known male but also a female on 27.1 (see thumbnails) (Delfín González, John Muddeman, et al)A bird was at Embalse de los Silos, Tenerife, Canary Islands on 26.1 (Tony Clarke)

Goldeneye Bucephala clangula. The female present last month at canal de Ano, RN Marismas de Santoña y Noja, Cantabria was still there on 3.1 (Miguel A.Rouco) to 13.1 (Alfonso Rodrigo,M.Angel García Matellanes)One at Santander bay on 12.1 (SEO/Cantabria)

Long-tailed duck* Clangula hyemalis. A winter plumage male  was at playa a Lanzada, O Grove, Pontevedra on 20.1 (Xurxo Piñeiro)

Velvet Scoter Melanitta fusca. c.Five were at Fangar bay, Ebre delta on 2.1 (David Bigas)There were 5 off Remolar beach, Llobregat Delta, Barcelona on 5.1 (Moisés Moreno et al). Another was at Ria de Ortigueira, A Coruña, Galicia on 4.1 (José Miguel Alonso Pumar)still there on 13.1 (Pablo Gutiérrez). A female was at Santoña, Cantabria on 6.1 (Gorka Ocio). There were three 1st winters at ria de Eo, Asturies/Lugo on 5.1 (Elias García Sánchez, C.M.Álvarez, J.A.García, D.López, G.Sánchez).An adult female was seen off Ladeira beach, Baiona, Pontevedra on 6-7.1 (César Vidal). There were 10 birds (2 males)off Llobregat delta, Barcelona, on 9-10.1 (January wildfowl count/F.López, J.Castelló,R.Gutiérrez, D.Bigas)One stayed off Salinas de Santa Pola, Alicante, from 11-13.1 (A.Jacobo Ramos, A.Quíles) See two thumbnails here.A female was seen off Peñíscola, Castelló on 12.1 (Victor J Hernández et al). Still there on 24.1 (César Vidal). On 27.01.02,  5 were seen at ria de Arousa, Pontevedra (Rafael y Tito Salvadores Ramos, César Vidal).One seen at Bahia de Santander during the wildfowl count on 12.1 (SEO/Cantabria)

Eider Somateria mollissima. A 1st winter male was present off Bengoa, Euskadi, on 3.1 (José Miguel Devesa). A female was seen at Santoña, Cantabria on 6.1 (Gorka Ocio). A female and a 1st winter male at ria de Eo, Asturies/Lugo were seen on 5.1 and are present there from late december. Very rare in that area (Elias García Sánchez, C.M.Álvarez, J.A.García, D.López, G.Sánchez).A bird was seen at close range at Vilanova i la Geltrú harbour, Barcelona, on 11.1 (Vittorio Pedrocchi)7 were off Santoña on 13.1 (Ignacio Gámez)One 1st winter male off Ebre delta, at Alfacs bay, on 16.1 (D.Bigas, R.Gutiérrez, E.Guinart, J.Piccardo. Two birds were off PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona, on 23.1 (Oriol Clarabuch).At Galicia, there was a female on 6.1 at playa a Lanzada, Sanxenxo, Conplejo-Intermareal Umia-Ogrobe, Pontevedra (Xurxo Piñeiro Alvarez y Manolo Alonso Alonso)

HOODED MERGANSER*Lophodytes cucullatus.1st FOR SPAIN. The female/ 1st winter first seen at Charca de riego de Playa       Paraiso, Tenerife, Canary Islands on 11-12.12.2001 (see december 2001 reports and thumbnail) was seen again on 5-9.1 (Tony Clarke).Still there on 26.1 (Tony Clarke)

Ruddy Duck* Oxyura jamaicensis A bird, probably a 1st winter, was seen at Riera de Sant Climent, Llobregat Delta, Barcelona, on 12.1 during the wildfowl count (Ferran López, Armand Ramal; Joan Castelló; Oriol Muntané, Emma Guinart, Ricard Gutiérrez). See a thumbnail here. It may have been overlooked there since 5.1 when probably taken as an scoter by some authors.Still there on 25.1 (Ferran López)

Spotted Eagle* Aquila clanga. A 1st winter unidentified eagle was seen at La Rocina, Doñana, by late december-early january (Santiago Villa Méndez) See a special page on this bird. A 1st winter was found at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà on 8.1 following last winter (different) individual (Albert Martínez-Vilalta, P.Feliu, O.Carabuch, B.Minobis, J.R.Sanz,J.Orta, E.Streich, T.Montràs, J.Martí)One at Doñana on 10.1 (Kalle Rainiio, Rami Lindroos, Sampo Kuntuu, Antti Kause)

Lanner Falcon* Falco biarmicus. A first winter bird of the  erlangeri subspecies, was seen again at close range at Gallinera ricefields, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, on 1.1 (Jordi Martí, Víctor Estrada).Previously seen on 2.12.

Allen's Gallinule* Porphyrula alleni. A first winter rallidae assigned to this species given the submitted description was seen on 8.1.2002 at es Pagos, Porreres, Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Joan Riera). The bird was ringed on 10.1 and fed in the hand due to its bad condition. It was released at S'Albufera de Mallorca where it had better survival possibilities (as through ForumAus mailing list).ANOTHER bird was brought to the recovery center of Santa Faz, Alicante on 26.1. It was a juvenile that had been found at Benidorm, Alacant (Luís Fidel Sarmiento).

Crested Coot Fulica cristata. There were three birds at Caño del Guadiamar, Sevilla on 3.1 (Paco Chiclana). Another semi-domestic bird carrying a pvc collar was nearby as well.At Marjal d'Almenara, Castelló de la Plana, two pvc-collared coots were seen on 5.1. These birds come from the reintroduction scheme hold by Generalitat Valenciana. It is the 1st record for the area (Victor J Hernández)There were four on 16.1 (Victor J Hernández). A white pvc-collared bird was at Lucio de la Dehesa, Doñana on 7.1 (J.Garzón, JR Súnico)3 were at Doñana (one at La Rocina and another at El Rocío) on 10.1 (Kalle Rainiio, Rami Lindroos, Sampo Kuntuu, Antti Kause)

Temminck's Stint Calidris temminckii. Unusual winter visitor. One was at Fondet de la Senieta, Elx, Alacant on 06.01(Elías Gomis) 

Spotted Sandpiper* Actitis macularia. At El Pinque,Playa       Paraiso, Tenerife, Canary Islands a bird was reported on 5.1 (Tony Clarke)

Ring-billed Gull* Larus delawarensis. On 20.1 an adult was at Ria de Ferrol, A Coruña and 3 hours later another was seen at Ria de Ares, not being clear if it was the same bird or not. See stunning photos of this bird in the SGO webpage here or here. Or see the thumbnail in this webpage.

Bonaparte's Gull* Larus philadelphia. An adult was seen at esembocadura del río Piles, Xixón / Gijón, Asturies on 17.1 (Elías García Sánchez )

Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus. Extremely rare in the Mediterranean. A 2nd winter was at Peñíscola harbour, Castelló on 22.1 (Víctor J. Hernández). Could well be the 1st for the province.

Glaucous Gull* Larus hyperboreus. A bird was at Paramean beach, esteiro, Muros, A Coruña, Galicia on 8.1 (José Maria Martínez)

Richard's Pipit* Anthus richardi. A bird was reported from Amarilla golf, Tenerife, Canary Islands on 5.1 along with a few Red-throated pipitsAnthus cervinus (Tony Clarke).Still there on 26.1(Tony Clarke). On 6.1 there was a bird at Xustás, Castro de Rei, Terrá Chá, Lugo (Antonio Sandoval)A confident bird was at Baldaio, A Coruña, on 13.1 (Antonio Sandoval). There were 9 birds overwintering at laguna de Vixan, P.N. Corrubedo, Ribeira, A Coruña on 31.1 (Xurxo Piñeiro)

Red-breasted Flycatcher* Ficedula parva. Overwintering record!. A bird was located at Tenbel, Tenerife, Canary Islands on 26.1 (Tony Clarke)

Dunnock Prunella modularis. A bird was reported from the vicinity of Embalse de la Cruz Santa, Tenerife, Canary Islands on 26.1. Would be a 1st for the Canary Islands if accepted (Tony Clarke)

Northern Grey Shrike Lanius excubitor. A true rarity for the country but present scarcely in the N. All sightings of this species should be published elsewhere to clarify the present status of this form. A bird was at Cospeito, Lugo on 6.1 (Antonio Sandoval)At Pantano del Ebro there were four birds on 19.1 -in three groups of one, two and one- (F.Arce, A.Herrero, R.Balbás; J.Bedia, F.González)

Brambling Fringilla montifringilla. Large flock in an unusual place .From 100-150 birds in a mixed flock with Chaffinches F.coelebs were present near Xinzo de Limia, Ourense, Galicia on 8.1 (César Vidal)

Yellow-breasted Bunting* Emberiza aureola. The bird reported las month as a juvenile/1w Emberiza rutila has turned up to be, once reviewed, scanned and compiled a description from the images, a YELLOW-BREASTED BUNTING, THE 3RD FOR SPAIN and 1st for Catalonia (after the work of J.Estrada helped by RG) 

Little Bunting* Emberiza pusilla. A 1st winter bird was trapped at Albacete on 30.1 (José Antonio Cañizares Mata)

Unidentifiable Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga/pomarina.
