(1) Navarra . The bird found on 20.10.2013 at Pitillas lagoon, Navarra, was still there on 4.2 (Gorka Gorospe). Still present on 11.2 (José Ardaiz).

(2-3) Lugo . There were two birds on 16.2 at Terra Chá, Lugo (José Ramón Bugallo, Óscar Rivas, Luis Gude, Carlos González). See two thumbnails here (José Ramón Bugallo). On 17.2 they were still present (Luis José Salaverri).

(1) Tenerife There was a drake on 13.2, seen previously e.g. in 23.1.2014 (David Parnaby, see a thumbnail here), at Armeñime reservoir, Adeje, Tenerife (Mark Beevers).

(2) Pontevedra. The drake seen last december at Miño river mouth, Pontevedra, remained at Xunqueira de Salcidos, A Guarda, Pontevedra on 16.2 (Samuel Altiber).

(1) Cádiz . On 22.2 a ♀ was seen at Laguna de Tarelo, Sanlucar de Barrameda, Cádiz (Jose Manuel Pérez Escribano, Jose Luis Garzón y David Cuenca). See a thumbnail here.

(2) Fuerteventura. The ♀ bird found on 29.12 at Salinas golf course, Fuerteventura (David Walsh), was still there on 22.2 (David Walsh).

(3) A Coruña . On 26.2 there was an adult drake at Cecebre reservoir, A Corula (Alfonso Valeiro).

(1) Tarragona. The bird seen on 2.1.2014 at Poble Nou, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona but also since 1.11.2013 (Chris Lamsdell) was seen again at Poble Nou on 5.2 (Matxalen Pauly, Albert Cama). See photos below and thumbnails here.

(2) Barcelona. The bird seen in previous months was seen again at Can Dimoni, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Llobregat delta, on 21.2 (Carlos López @ornitho.cat)

(3) Tarragona. On 22.2 there was a bird at Les Olles, L'Ampolla, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Manolo Sánchez Blanch @ornitho.cat). It is presumably different from the El Poble Nou individual.

(4) Valencia. On 13-14.2 there was a bird, presumably the same seen in previous months, at Catarroja ricefields, PN Albufera de Valencia (Pablo Vera). See two photos below.

Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus (1)
(1) Cádiz. On 2.2 a 1w was seen at La Janda, Cádiz (Peter Soper), perhaps the bird seen last month.The bird was seen again on 13.2 at La Janda (Javier Elorriaga). See a thumbnail here.

Greater Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga (1,2,3,4,5)
(1) Girona. The 1w bird seen at Pals ricefields, Girona and later at Estany del Cortalet, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona was seen again on 2.2 (Manuel Caamaño; Arnau Soler Costa, Ramon Aguilar). See a photo below and thumbnail here. Not seen during the following week where it was reported to have reached France by Narbonne (Joan Ventura in litt).

(2) Alicante. The satellite-tracked Greater Spotted Eagle 'Tonn' was seen at El Hondo on 7.2 (Barry Chambers, Malcolm Palmer). Seen again on 19.2 from the boardwalk at the Visitor Centre (Graham Critchell)

(3) Alicante. The Greater Spotted Eagle similar to Tonn but without satellite antenna (Not Tonn) was seen at El Hondo on 1.2 from the North OP roosting in a tree (Graham Critchell). On 22.2 it was seen and photographed again (Pep Cantó). See a thumbnail here. Same bird and two more (another adult but antenna was not confirmed and a 3rd bird) was seen also there on 22.2 (Richard Howard, Mick Brewer). See two photos here. Seen again on 25.2 from the boardwalk at the Visitor Centre (Graham Critchell).

(4) Alicante. The Sub-adult bird was seen again at El Hondo, Alicante, on 6.2 from the first hide on the Vistabella Road (Graham Critchell). The subadult was seen at El Hondo again on 14.2 (Malcolm Palmer, Barry Chambers). On 19.2 and 22.2 it was seen again (Graham Critchell).

(5) Alicante. The adult bird (neither Tonn nor Not Tonn) was seen on 15.2 from the North OP an don 19.2 from the boardwalk at the Visitor Centre (Graham Critchell).

SANDHILL CRANE Grus canadensis (1) PROBABLY RETURNING BIRD, HENCE 1ST FOR SPAIN
(1) Zaragoza. On 25.2 one bird was found at ind Gallocanta lagoon, near Las Cuerlas petrol station (Felipe Rosado, Luis Salguero, Demetrio Vidal). The following day 26.2 it was relocated and a photo was taken (José Portillo, Ferran López, Rafa Armada). See a photo below (Ferran López). nLack of migration and N wind possibly caused that the Crane rested in the lagoon at least until 28.2, despite it was not searched for. It was probably the same bird seen in previous years (Felipe Rosado). See more photos below and thumbnails here (Felipe Rosado).

(1) Tarragona. The bird found on 28.8 at grassfields near Migjorn, Sant Jaume d'Enveja, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona which had been seen during autumn - winter 2013 was seen again on 2.2 at Migjorn, Sant Jaume d'Enveja, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona. Relocated (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé).

(1) A Coruña The adult found at Cariño harbour, A Coruña on 4.1 was still there on 6.2 (Ricardo Hevia). It remained there on 12.2 and 13.2, when photographed, see below (Ricardo Hevia).And on 15.2 too (Ricardo Hevia).The bird remained at Cariño the following week: 19.2, 20.2 (Ricardo Hevia) and 22.2 (Alfonso Rodrigo et al) to 23.2 (Gorka Ocio et al). Seen again on 25.2 (Ricardo Hevia).

(2) A Coruña There was a 3cy bird on 16.2 at Cedeira, A Coruña. It is different from the Cariño bird (1) who was still there (Pablo Pita).Probably this individual moved on 23.2 to Lago, Xove,Lugo (Luis José Salaverri, Jordi Martí-Aledo; David Calleja, Toño Salazar).

Ross's Gull Rhodostethia rosea (1) 4TH FOR SPAIN
(1) Pontevedra There was a 1w on 7.2 at Pontevedra harbour, at As Corvaceiras by the mouth of river Gafos, Galicia. Initially found by A.F. Cordeiro A. Barqueiro Alonso and Juan Carlos Epifanio, who photographed the bird (see below), it is identified as Ross by Ricardo Hevia. Seen again by over 20 birdwatchers on 8.2.when featured in the local press ( Ricardo Hevia, José Ramón Gómez, Juan Carlos Epifanio, Juan Gómez, Samuel Paz, Pablo Gutiérrez, David Martínez Lago, Antonio Sandoval, Miguel Maestro, Atocha Ramos, Alexia del Rio, Manuel Xestoso, Cristina Álvarez, Daniel Monteagudo, Carlos Luciarte, Adolfo Lomeña, Tito Salvadores, Rafael Salvadores, César Vidal, Stefán Áki Ragnarsson, José Álvarez, Pablo Sanmartín, José Luís Lorenzo, Antonio Fontoira, José, Carla y Cosme Damián Romay). See photos below and thumbnails here. Also present on 9.2 (Xabier Vázquez Pumariño).The bird was relocated on 13.2 at Lagares river mouth, A Calzoa beach, Vigo (Marcos Prada), where it was photographed (see a thumbnail here). On 14.2 it was still there (José Ramón Gómez & José Luis Lorenzo "Colón"; Luís José Salaverri). Seen again on 15.2 (Luis Mario Arce; Juan Sagardia et al, see photos and video below) and 16.2 (over 14 authors, C.D.Romay in litt.). Further sightings during the next week: 17.2 (David R. Vieites), 18.2 (Luis Álvarez), 19.2 (Juan Pita-Romero), 21.2 (Alex Colorado, José Portillo, Luis J. Salaverri, Gorka Ocio et al) and 22.2 (Graciela Fernández, Manoel Carregal). Still present in the last February week: 26.2, Xunqueira de Lagares, Vigo, Pontevedra (José Álvarez Gándara) and 27.2 when flushed by dogs (José Ramón Sánchez Bugallo).

(4) Lanzarote Arrefice. There was one at Arrecife on 22.2 (Francisco Javier García Vargas).

(5-6) Fuerteventura Costa Calma. There were two there on 20.2 (David Walsh/ Ornitholidays) as still one individual there on 22.2 (David Walsh).

(7) Fuerteventura Hotel Gorriones beach, playa Barca. There was one there on 20.2 (David Walsh/ Ornitholidays) which remained there on 22.2 (David Walsh).

Otherwise, non submitted or rejected records will be deleted and ringings will not be included in national or international databases. Ringers not submitting rare bird ringings will be listed. Submitting ringing records is hence specially encouraged as a contribution to global bird knowledge..

Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent.Photos could be cropped for editorial reasons.Gibraltar news are included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with anew icon.
