GALLOANSERAE
NEOAVES
Madeira-Cape Verde's Petrel Pterodroma feae/madeira (1)
(1) Asturias/A Coruña. One was seen flying W off Punta de la Vaca, Gozón, Asturias, on 20.7 morning (Jorge Valella). Later in the day, c. afternoon, one was seen off Estaca de Bares, A Coruña and it might be the same individual (Ricardo Hevia, Antonio Martínez Pernas, Antonio Sandoval).

CAPE VERDE SHEARWATER Calonectris edwarsii (1) THIRD FOR SPAIN
(1) Montaña Clara (N of Lanzarote). The bird found on 28.6, measured and sampled within a Cory's Shearwater colony (Calonectris diomedea) at Montaña clara islet, North of Lanzarote, Canary Islands (Laura Zango, Jacob González-Solís). was retrapped on 2.7 and ringed with ring 6215207. Measurements showed that it was a different bird from those seen in 2010 in the same islet. See a special photopage here .The bird was not in active breeding mood since the brood patch was not active (see below)

Red-billed Tropicbird Phaethon aethereus (1-3)
(1-3) Lanzarote. On 19.7.2013 two adults were seen at the same nest featured in previous months. One chick appears in the photos (see below). Breeding confirmed (Juan Sagardía, Antonio Ceballos). See two photos below. On 29.7 the two adults were seen near Órzola, Lanzarote (Juan Sagardía).

Presumed hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta (1,2)
(1) Cáceres. There was a bird on 16.7 at Charco Salado, Casatejada, Cáceres (Sergio Mayordomo; Javier Briz, Vicente Risco). See a photo below and two thumbnails here.

(2) Barcelona. The bird seen in previous months near can Dimoni, Llobregat delta, Barcelona, was relocated at the same place, at Riera Rojam on 28.7 (Raúl Bastida)

Lesser Flamingo Phoenicopterus minor (1-3,4-6)
(1-3) Málaga . Three individuals were at Fuentedepiedra lagoon, Málaga, on 12.7: two adults and a 25-day chick. Breeding confirmed (Manolo Rendón, José Miguel Ramírez).
(4-6) Sevilla. On 16.7 the three birds featured previously at Veta la Palma, Espacio Natural Doñana, La Puebla del Río, Sevilla were seen again (José Luís Arroyo). See a photo below and thumbnails here. Record submitted to CR/SEO-BirdLife.

Broad-billed Sandpiper Limicola falcinellus (1)
(1) Tarragona . There was an adult at El violí ricefields, Migjorn, Sant Jaume d'Enveja, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 30.7 morning (David Bigas, Thomas Kuiper). On 30.7 evening it was still there (Ricard Gutiérrez). See two photos below and a thumbnail here. It continued into early August.

Baltic Gull Larus fuscus fuscus (1)
(1) Madrid . There was a 1st summer (2cy) the days 12,19 & 26.7.2013 at Pinto Dump, Madrid. It was ringed with a Swedish ring (8120021 Stockholm). See a photo below (Javier Marchamalo)

c.f. Elegant Tern Sterna elegans (1-4,5)
(1-4) Valencia . There has been a pure pair of Elegant-like terns at PN l'Albufera de Valencia breeding this season. News have been broadcasted once the chick has flown. One of those has been the male seen in previous years with a yellow-pvc ring that seems to have lost (!). They have produced a chick (see photo below) that began flying on 1.7.2013. On 2.7 a 3rd adult was seen in the area too (J.I.Dies). See a photo below and read more in Birding Albufera website here. The juvenile was still present in the area on 12.7 with the ringed male (photo below). The female was last seen on 5.7 and the 3rd adult was only present between 2-4.7 (J.Ignacio Dies).
Perhaps these four birds were seen at Cádiz, by (Rafael García Costales) in a number of days and sites:
24.7 : 1 elegans type, ad, unringed, Punta de los Saboneses, El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz (Rafa García); 1 elegans 'typical' , adult, unringed, Salina de la Tapa, El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz (Rafa García), see Rafa blog here.
25.7: 1 elegans 'typical', adult, unringed, Salina de la Tapa, El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz (Dani Maza, Pablo Barrena y Rafa García)
26.7: 1 elegans 'type' adult, unringed; another typical adult unringed; another elegant-type with metal ring in right tarsus and a juvenile unringed near the other, its father, Salina de la Tapa, El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz (Rafa García). See more in his blog.

Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii (1,2)
(1) Pontevedra . There was a ringed bird on 23.7 at bateas de Areamilla, Cangas do Morrazo, Pontevedra (José Luis Lorenzo 'Colón'). The bird was ringed and right leg was holding the code 'A N 8 4'. See photos below and thumbnails here. This bird was ringed as a chick at Rockabill on 26.6.2011. The national ring number is SR95884(Stephen Newton via Antonio Gutiérrez and C.Damian Romay).

(2) Pontevedra . On 8.7, a ringed bird was seen at A Xunqueira, Moaña, Pontevedra (Alberto Pastoriza). This was also a ringed bird (AU 45) that had been ringed at Rockabill island, Dublin, Ireland on 13.7.2011 (Stephen Newton).

Garden Bulbul Pycnonotus barbatus (1-3)
(1-3) Cádiz . Two adults were seen feeding a chuck at Tarifa, Cádiz on 8.7 (Emilia Jiménez Vaquero). First mainland Spain & mainland Europe breeding record as far as we know. Record submitted to CR/SEO-BirdLife.

(1) Barcelona . One adult was seen at Llobregat delta, Barcelona, on 30.7 (Ferran López). See a photo below.

Such records should be submitted to Juan Antonio Lorenzo at canarias @ seo.org** Canarian records of species which are rarities nationwide are included in the main text in violet type.
*** Ringed birds in Spain have to be submitted and accepted by CR/SEO-BirdLife, according to Environment Ministery of Spain and the authonomous communities agreements, to be accepted as valid ringings in the national database. Otherwise, non submitted or rejected records will be deleted and ringings will not be included in national or international databases. Ringers not submitting rare bird ringings will be listed. Submitting ringing records is hence specially encouraged as a contribution to global bird knowledge..

From March
2005 this webpage only includes records of birds needing homologation
by CR/SEO. For other local rarities contact local bird reports or records
committees. See here those rarities only for the
Canary Islands also dealt by CR/SEO. Changes in application to the rarity
list from January 2006. New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex,
Sterna bengalensis and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus
richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and are not be included
from 2006.
Recent
reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are
both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail
lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else
than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded
to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does
not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent.Photos could be cropped for editorial reasons.Gibraltar news are
included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society
but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this
area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors
of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with
a icon. We would welcome to receive
a spare copy of those journals using these news for commercial purposes.
