Red-throated Diver Gavia stellata. Inland record: A juvenile at Embalse de Las Cañas, Biana, Navarra, on  29.11.01 (Gorka Gorospe, Raquel Casado y Vanessa Sarasola)

Slavonian Grebe* Podiceps auritus. A bird was found at Fangar Bay, Ebre delta, Tarragona, on 4.12 (David Bigas/PNDE)About 7-9 birds are at RN Marismas de Santoña y Noja, Cantabria from mid november (Juan Gómez Navedo)Still there on 16.12 (Fernando Arce)and on 17.12 (six birds, Enrique Gómez Crespo).Nine birds counted in Santoña on 14.12 (JG Navedo). There were two at ria de Ortigueira, A Coruña on 21.12 (Ricardo Hevia, Amando Represa, José Miguel Alonso Pumar).One bird was at El Abra, Bilbao, Bizkaia on 20-24.12 (Gorka Ocio).There were four at Santoña, one within the harbour,on 26.12 (Fernando Arce, Delfín González). Another was at El Abra, Bilbao on 27.12 (Delfín González)

Pied-Billed Grebe* Podilymbus podiceps A bird was found on 5.12 at laguna de Traba, Laxe, A Coruña (José Luís Rabuñal Patiño). It is not known if it could be the same bird seen some months ago at Corrubedo (César Vidal, pers. com.).If new,4th for Spain after the bird at Canary Islands, that of La Rioja (still there presumably) and the Corrubedo sighting.

Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena. At Pedreña harbour,  Santander bay, there was a bird on 17.12 (Fernando Arce /SEO Cantabria). Another was at Hondarribia harbour, Txingudi bay, Gipuzkoa, on 30.12 (David Calleja, Mikel Guereñu)

Fulmar Fulmarus glacialis A bird was seen from Punta de la Vaca, Gozón, Asturies, on 6.12 (Elías García)

Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus. Not (yet?) a rare species but 'bird of the year 2001' for SEO/Birdlife and a truly endangered and endemic species to the country. We will feature large concentrations of this species like we've done for sightings of Mediterranean Shearwater. About 900 birds off Cullera beach, Valencia from 1-7.12 (Bosco Dies, J. Ignacio Dies, J. Luís Terrasa, Fco. Javier García i Gans, Carlos Oltra). Further North, no important concentration (c.7 birds seen) during a seawatch ranging 4,5 to 1 miles offshore fully covering another traditional pre-breeding site: Garraf-Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 4.12 (R.Gutiérrez, E.Guinart, F.X.Santaeufemia, D.Garcia Ferré). But 200 birds were seen on 8.12 off l'Almadrava beach, Tarragona (Lluís Gustamante)About 70 off Cap de Creus,Girona with 30 Mediterranean Shearwaters P.yelkouan, on 9.12, many more than in previous months (Ponç Feliu).On 11.12, c.110 birds off Marjal del Moro, Sagunt, València (Marcial Yuste).

Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus. Simultaneous winter records in well-watched localities where not recorded this winter: a bird was ringed at Remolar-Filipines reserve, Llobregat Delta, Barcelona and another was seen at the Marquesa beach track, Ebre Delta Tarragona, on 18.12 (Quim Bach, Ferran López; David Bigas)

Great-White Egret Egretta alba There were five birds on 1.12 at es Cibollar, Albufera de Mallorca, Mallorca (Maties Rebassa) with and escaped Yellow-billed stork Mycteria ibis.Two were at Entremuros del Guadiamar, Sevilla on 8.12 (Paco Chiclana).8-10 birds in flooded areas (marjals) de Sueca and Cullera,  València between 1-7.12 (Bosco Dies, J. Ignacio Dies, J. Luís Terrasa, Fco. Javier García i Gans, Carlos Oltra)At Gola del Port de Pollença, Mallorca, Illes Balears, there was a single bird on 7.12 (Pere Tomàs).At Ebre delta, Tarragona, a total count of 92 birds present all month long (David Bigas).At Villafáfila, Zamora, the bird featured in November was still there on 1.12 (Alfonso Rodrigo) and 15.12 (Miguel Angel García Matellanes, Alfonso Rodrigo García).8 at Brazo del Este, Sevilla on 26.12 (Paco Chiclana).At Salinas de Bonanza there were 6 birds on 28.12 (Paco Chiclana). 

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. At Valencia, a single bird at Marjal de Pinedo on 1-7.12 (Bosco Dies, J. Ignacio Dies, J. Luís Terrasa, Fco. Javier García i Gans, Carlos Oltra). But the largest-ever recorded flock was one of 450 birds (!!) seen at Brazo del Este, Sevilla on 7.12 (Daniel L Huertas)At Ebre delta, Tarragona, a total count of 94 birds present, mostly at Buda Island, all month long (David Bigas)400 birds at Brazo del Éste, Sevilla on 22.12 (Paco Chiclana)

Sacred Ibis* Threskiornis aethiopicus. One seen at estany de Palau, Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural park on 18.12 (J.Martí, T.Montràs, B.Minobis, O.Clarabuch, A.Batlle).A bird was seen at Bassa de S'Aeroport de Mallorca, Illes Balears on 27.12 (Lalo Ventoso).Another or the same was on 27.12 too at English birdge, S'Albufera de Mallorca (David Taylor). At Camí dels Polls, S'Albufera de Mallorca, it was relocated on 29.12 (Maties Rebassa)

Mute Swan* Cygnus olor. From 14-19.12 there was a bird at Plaiaundi, Txingudi, Gipuzkoa (Mikel Etxaniz)

Barnacle Goose* Branta leucopsis. One at laguna de la Nava de Fuentes, Palencia, on 7.12 but three on 12-13.12 (Enrique Gómez Crespo).Another at Villafáfila, Zamora, on 1.12 (Laguna de la Rosa, Alfonso Rodrigo) and  3.12 (Antonio Westermeyer)and 6.12 ( Aurea Acebes, Carlos Zumalacárregui, David Miguelez & Assossiació Naturalista Torrellenca (ANT)still there on 23.12 (Karmelo de Dios) .The bird featured in the november page in Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, is still there on 29.12 (Jordi Martí). At Azud de Riolobos, Palencia, there were 3 birds on 23.12 (Gabriel Martín)One at Villafáfila on 28.12 (Juan Diego Acevedo Barberá, Alfonso López). Eight near PN Doñana on 27.12 (Paco Chiclana)

Brent Goose Branta bernicla. Three at laguna de la Nava de Fuentes, Palencia, on 13.12 (Enrique Gómez Crespo)From Pedreña harbour,  Santander bay, three birds were seen on 17.12 (Fernando Arce /SEO Cantabria). Another was at Doñana on 30.12 (Juan Carlos Marín)

Canada Goose* Branta canadensis. The bird appeared in Granollers park on 25.11 (Antoni Arrizabalaga pers com) was still there on 1.12 (Salvador Cases). Another was at Laguna de
Barillos, Villafáfila. 06-12-2001.(Miguel Ángel García
Matellanes y Alfonso Rodrigo García.)Still there on 23.12 (Karmelo de Dios). The Granollers bird was transported to a recovery center by Wildlife Wardens on 12.12 (pers. com. to R.Gutiérrez). The bird previosly featured in this web on November and arly-December is observed again on 8.12 in a big feeding

Red-breasted Goose* Branta ruficollis. The bird previously reported on 28.11 (see November report) is observed again among ~500 Greylag Geese on 8.12 at the Salina Grande de Villafáfila, Villafáfila NR (Zamora) (Luís Álvarez Viéitez & Manuel Alonso Alonso/SEO-Pontevedra). Present also on 1.12 (Alfonso Rodrigo; A. Sotelo) and 6.12 ( Aurea Acebes, Carlos Zumalacárregui, David Miguelez & Assossiació Naturalista Torrellenca (ANT)).Still at Villafáfila (Barillos) on 15.12 (Gorka Ocio)

Bean Goose Anser fabalis. An increasingly rare species. We welcome observations of this formerly regular bird.At Villafáfila, Zamora, c.4000 birds overwintered until 1981 but 21 in  1997, 9 in 1998, 16 in 1999 , 7 in 2000 and none in 2001  Two birds were at La Nava, Palencia amongst 5098 Greylags on 13.12 (Enrique Gómez Crespo)One rossicus bird was at Campos de Villarrín, RN Lagunas de Villafáfila, Zamora on 15.12 (Alfonso Rodrigo,Miguel Angel García Matellanes), but 3 reported the same day at Barillos (2 fabalis and 1 rossicus, Gorka Ocio).

Bar-headed Goose* Anser indicus. A bird was at Villafáfila, Zamora, on 9.12 (Raúl Alonso).Still at Barillos, Villafáfila on 15.12 (Gorka Ocio)A bird still at Villafáfila on 29.12 (Delfín González). See a thumbnail here.

Pink-footed Goose* Anser brachyrhynchus. One individual with five Greylag geese was seen from 1.12 till 7.12 at RN Marismas de Santoña y Noja, Cantabria (Juan Gómez Navedo) Still there on 16.12 (Fernando Arce) but identification controversial, possibly being instead another white-fronted kind of goose. Waiting  for videocaptures and detailed descriptions for a definitive identification (editorial comment)One at laguna de la Rosa, Villafáfila on 28-29.12 (Juan Diego Acevedo Barberá, Alfonso López)

White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons. The 3rd for Catalonia found in november was still at Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta, on 2.12 (Armand Ramal).Still on 19.12 (Ferran López)).An adult was found in company of 8 Greylag Geese at Ebre Delta, Tarragona on 5.12 (Buda Island: Raimundo Tomàs, David Bigas) to 17.12 at least (Tancada -Buda : David Bigas). Another was at laguna de la Nava de Fuentes, Palencia on 12-13.12 (Enrique Gómez Crespo). One bird is observed in a big feeding flock of ~1000 Greylag Geese on 8.12 close to the road between Villalpando and Villafáfila, Villafáfila NR, Zamora (Luís Álvarez Viéitez & Manuel Alonso Alonso/SEO-Pontevedra)Three birds were at Villafáfila on 15.12 at Campos de Villarrín (Alfonso Rodrigo,Miguel Angel García Matellanes), still there on 22-23.12 (Karmelo de Dios)One at Villafáfila on 28.12 (Juan Diego Acevedo Barberá, Alfonso López). 3 at Doñana on 27.12 (Paco Chiclana et al).

Lesser White-fronted Goose* Anser erythropus. A ringed bird was seen at Villafáfila Zamora by mid November, possibly still there (Miguel A Rouco). See a web page devoted to this bird (opens in a new window)

Ruddy Shelduck* Tadorna ferruginea. Two were at Entremuros del Guadiamar, Sevilla on 8.12 (Paco Chiclana)At Villafáfila. Zamora, there were 3 on 6.12 ( Aurea Acebes, Carlos
Zumalacárregui, David Miguelez & Assossiació Naturalista Torrellenca (ANT) and 9.12 (Raúl Alonso)

Egyptian Goose* Alopochen aegyptiacus. There were two individuals at Bassa de s'Aeroport de Mallorca, Illes Balears, on 27.12 (Lalo Ventoso)

Hybrid Mallard x Red-crested Pochard Anas platyrhynchos x Netta rufina A male resembling a mixture of these two species was seen at Llobregat Delta, Barcelona on 4.12 but not subsequently. A photo page is under construction but see a thumbnail here (Ferran López).Still there on 17.12 (Xavier Larruy, Ferran López, Ricard Gutiérrez)

American Black Duck* Anas rubripes. The bird featured in previous months was relocated at at Ria de Foz, Lugo, Galicia on 2.12 near a flock of American Wigeons (Luis José Salaverri Leiras)

American Wigeon* Anas americana. Largest-ever party: SEVEN birds at Ria de Foz, Lugo, Galicia on 2.12 (four the previous day): 2 ad males, 2 1stw or eclipse males and 3 females (Luis José Salaverri Leiras). Six birds (2 adult males, 2 1st winter males and 2 females), already reported in this web page, were observed mixed with Eurasian Wigeons Anas penelope on 9.12 at Ria de Foz, Foz (Galicia/Galiza) (Jorge -Xurxo- Pinheiro).

Ring-necked duck* Aythya collaris. On 7-15.12.01 there were an adult and three subadult males plus a female at embalse de Selga de Ordás, León (Aurea Acebes, Nacho Rodriguez, Carlos Zumalacárregui, David Miguelez & Assossiació Naturalista Torrellenca (ANT); Carlos Gutiérrez Expósito).There were two females at la Furta, Asturies on 8.12 ( Aurea Acebes, Carlos Zumalacárregui, David Miguelez & Assossiació Naturalista Torrellenca (ANT)).There were three  females at embalse de La Granda, Gozón, Asturies on 19.12 (Elías García Sánchez)

Ferruginous duck Aythya nyroca. At least 3 birds at mata del Fang, Albufera de València and Silla marshes, València, on 1-7.12 (Bosco Dies, J. Ignacio Dies, J. Luís Terrasa, Fco. Javier García i Gans, Carlos Oltra). A male was at laguna de Vixan, PN Corrubedo. A Coruña, on 5.12 (César Vidal, Tito Salvadores)Two birds were at Embalse de la Furta, Avilés, Asturies, on 8.12 ( Aurea Acebes, Carlos Zumalacárregui,David Miguelez & Assossiació Naturalista Torrellenca (ANT). At Ebre delta, Tarragona, 11 birds present: 3 (at Encanyissada lagoon and 8 at Canal Vell on 19.12 (David Bigas)Two males were at embalse de La Granda, Gozón, Asturies on 19.12 and a male was at parque de Isabel la Católica, Xixón,Asturies on 20.12 (Elías García Sánchez)

Scaup Aythya marila. A female was at a lagoon S of RN Marismas de Santoña y Noja, Cantabria ( Juan Gómez Navedo  ) from 28.11 till 7.12.Two immatures (at least one a male) at El fang and  Silla, València on 1-7.12. There was an adut female the previous week not seen afterwards (Bosco Dies, J. Ignacio Dies, J. Luís Terrasa, Fco. Javier García i Gans, Carlos Oltra)On 7.12 -15.12.01 there were two adult males and a female at embalse de Selga de Ordás, León (Aurea Acebes, Nacho Rodriguez, Carlos Zumalacárregui, David Miguelez & Assossiació
Naturalista Torrellenca (ANT); Carlos Gutiérrez Expósito)At Ebre delta, Tarragona, 7 birds present: 2 1w m at Encanyissada lagoon and 5 at Canal Vell (3f/1w, 2m 1w) on 19.12 (David Bigas)There was a female at embalse de La Granda, Gozón, Asturies on 19.12 and three more at San Andrés reservoir the same day (Elías García Sánchez)

Goldeneye Bucephala clangula. A lone female at canal de Ano, RN Marismas de Santoña y Noja, Cantabria () from 30.11 till 7.12. Still there on 16.12 (Fernando Arce)At Ebre delta, Tarragona, 2 birds present: 2 1w/f at Canal Vell on 19.12 (David Bigas)

Velvet Scoter Melanitta fusca. Scarce species. Three birds were seen off Llobregat Delta on 4-5.12 ((R.Gutiérrez, E.Guinart, F.X.Santaeufemia, D.Garcia Ferré; Ferran López).Two more were at Ebre Delta, Tarragona the same day (David Bigas) Two females were at Ria de Ortigueira, A Coruña, on 7.12 (Ricardo Hevia, José Miguel Alonso Pumar). On 04.12,   2 were at playa de la Lanzada, O Grove, Pontevedra (Emilio Sabaris). And on 
06.12,  2 more at Camariñas, A Coruña (Sterna Ferrol)A bird was off Santoña, Cantabria on 16.12 (Fernando Arce)At Ebre delta, Tarragona, 3 birds present: 1 m 1w and 2 f 1w off La Marquesa beach on 17.12 (David Bigas)At Santoña, one bird was seen on 14.12 (JG Navedo) and there were two birds at canal de Ano on 23.12 (Karmelo de Dios; Juan Carlos Marín). Eider Somateria mollissima. A female was at  estuario del Miño, A Guarda, Pontevedra on 16.12 (Tito Salvadores Ramos, Rafael Salvadores Ramos, Francisco Arcos Fernández y César Vidal)Two females were seen at Ria de Villaviciosa, Asturies on 15.12 (Xavier Gámez, Elvira Ariana César)A female was seen at playa de Bañugues, Gozón, Asturies on 19.12 (Elías García Sánchez)

Long-tailed duck Clangula hyemalis. Extremely rare in the Mediterranean. A first winter male was found on 22.11 at Tancada lagoon, Ebre Delta (Ricardo Ramos)and was still there on 17.12 (David Bigas)

Goosander* Mergus merganser. Three females/1 winters were reported from PN Marismas del Odiel, Huelva, on 16.12(Demetrio Aguado Macias)

HOODED MERGANSER* Lophodytes cucullatus.1st FOR SPAIN. A female/ 1st winter was seen at Charca de riego de Playa Paraiso,Tenerife, Canary Islands on 11.12.2001 (Dan Lupton y Barry Lancaster) and relocated on 12.12 (Eduardo García del Rey). It is the first record for the country and certainly looks like a wild vagrant. There are no birds kept in captivity of this species in the Canary Islands (E.García del Rey). See a thumbnail here.

White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala. Large concentration: there were 150 birds at laguna de Tarelo, Cádiz, on 28.12 (Paco Chiclana)

Spotted Eagle* Aquila clanga. A subadult was found at Entremuros del Guadiamar, Sevilla on 8.12 (Paco Chiclana)

Rough-legged Buzzard* Buteo lagopus. The bird found the previous month at Ebre Delta, relocated and still present near the Tancada lagoon on 17.12 (David Bigas).Another bird, claimed as from this species was between Hostalric and Tordera, Barcelona, by mid month possibly still there, just in the same place where another individual was claimed in december 1999 (report under study by the RC) (J.Ribas, communicated by X.Larruy)

Long-legged Buzzard* Buteo rufinus A bird was seen at La Lantejuela, Sevilla, on 25.12 (Paco Chichlana)

Lanner Falcon* Falco biarmicus. A first winter bird putatively assigned to erlangeri subspecies, was seen at close range at Gallinera ricefields, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, on 2.12 (Jordi Martí, Pere Serrano).

Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni. Rare wintering bird in northern Spain: 3 birds were observed on 8.12 in Otero de Sariegos, Villafáfila NR (Zamora) (Luís Álvarez Viéitez & Manuel Alonso Alonso/SEO-Pontevedra).

Crested Coot Fulica cristata. There were two birds near Doñana on 27.12 (Paco Chiclana,J.M. Reyes, J. Salcedo)

Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis. Wintering records: 6 birds amongst 150 Redshanks T.nebularia at Entremuros y Dehesa de Pilas, Doñana outskirts, Sevilla on 7-9.12.01 (Jorge Garzón). Another single at Racó de l'Olla, Albufera de València on 1-7.12 (Bosco Dies, J. Ignacio Dies, J. Luís Terrasa, Fco. Javier García i Gans, Carlos Oltra)

Temminck's Stint Calidris temminckii. Overwintering flock: 22 birds (16 at rice-fields near Canal Vell and 6 at Buda island) were counted at Ebre Delta, Tarragona, about 18.12 (David Bigas)

Pomarine Skua Stercorarius pomarinus. Late record: A bird was seen c. 2.5 miles off Llobregat Delta, Barcelona  flying S on 4.12 (R.Gutiérrez, E.Guinart, F.X.Santaeufemia, D.Garcia Ferré) 

Ring-billed Gull* Larus delawarensis. One 2nd winter at Parque Isabel la Católica, Gijón, Asturies on 8.12 ( César Alvarez Laó, Aurea Acebes, Carlos Zumalacárregui, David Miguelez & Assossiació Naturalista Torrellenca (ANT)).The bird remained there on 16.12 (Xavier Gámez, Elvira Ariana César)A 1st winter was at ría de Baiona, Pontevedra on 19.12 (César Vidal)Three birds at Asturies: two 2nd winters and a 1st winter at parque de Isabel la Católica, Xixón on 20.12

Little Auk Alle alle. Five birds were seen flying W from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, on 9.12 (Antonio Sandoval)A bird was seen from Punta de la Vaca, Gozón, Asturies on 6.12 (Elías García Sánchez). At Cariño harbour, A Coruña, there was one bird on 21.12 (Ricardo Hevia, Amando Represa, José Miguel Alonso Pumar).

Black Guillemot* Cepphus grylle. 2nd FOR SPAIN. On 27.12.2001, a bird was seen flying towards the South off cabo Silleiro, Baiona, Pontevedra (César Vidal Rodríguez.).There is a claim from december 2000 but it was neither submitted nor clarified. This sighting is exactly nine years after the first for the country also seen by this observer with other authors in that ocasion (27.12.92) . See a thumbnail of the sketch drawing here.

Common Swift Apus apus. Wintering record in the N. A bird was at estuario del Miño, A Guarda, Pontevedra on 16.12 (Tito Salvadores Ramos, Rafael Salvadores Ramos, Francisco Arcos Fernández y César Vidal)

Richard's Pipit* Anthus richardi. Two birds from those reported in november were still at Marjal del Moro (Moro Marsh) on 3.12 (Delfín González).3 birds at PN Corrubedo, A Coruña on 5.12 (César Vidal, Tito Salvadores).One near Tancada lagoon, Ebre Delta, Tarragona, on 7.12 (Raúl González, Steve West, Toni Nievas & Gerard Bota).but two again until 17.12 near the beach (pers.com. to David Bigas). On 8.12, one at laguna de Vixán, Corrubedo, A Coruña (Miguel Lustres, Juan José Santos, Bruno Almón, Eduardo Díaz, Marcial Lorenzo, Diego de Nóvoa, Xosé Pardavila y Gonzalo Mucientes).A 1st winter was ringed and released on 5.12 at Rouxique's fields, Sanxenxo (Sao Genjo), (Galicia/Galiza) (Grupo de Anelamento Anduriña).5 birds were seen at Cabo peñas, Luanco, Asturies on 8.12 ( Aurea Acebes, Carlos Zumalacárregui, David Miguelez & Assossiació Naturalista Torrellenca (ANT), but one on 4.12 (Elías García) and references of a groups of 11 present there (Elías García pers. com). On 17.12, 3 birds were located at marjal de Sueca (partida de la Llonga), València (Bosco Díes)At least 7 birds as Cabu Peñes, Gozón. Asturies on 19.12 (Elías García Sánchez)

Olive-backed Pipit* Anthus hodgsoni. 2ND FOR SPAIN, first for mainland Spain after a bird seen in Mallorca in 10-11.10.1990 (Ardeola, 39:80): TWO BIRDS at estuario del Miño, A Guarda, Pontevedra seen at close range on 16.12 (Tito Salvadores Ramos, Rafael Salvadores Ramos, Francisco Arcos Fernández y César Vidal)Still one bird on 20.12 (César Vidal). Tristis' Chiffchaff*Phylloscopus collybita tristis. [Note: CR/SEO
policy is only to accept in-the-hand or excellently seen birds,
hence all field-data reported as birds-showing-characters-of]. A bird was seen close to the Olive-backed pipit on 16.12 at  estuario del Miño, A Guarda, Pontevedra (Tito Salvadores Ramos, Rafael Salvadores Ramos, Francisco Arcos Fernández y César Vidal).Still there on 19.12. Isabelline Shrike* Lanius isabellinus. 4th FOR SPAIN. A bird was trapped and ringed on 6.12 near El Hondo, Alicante. No details about which form of isabellinus belongs(Mariano López Maciá, Oscar Aldeguer Peral, Francisco García-Gutiérrez Castejón e Ignacio García Peiró).

Little Bunting* Emberiza pusilla At El Salobral, Albacete, a bird was ringed on 12.12 in a Reed-Bunting (E.schoeniclus) roost (Antonio Fajardo Sánchez y Ángel J. Lara Pomares ;Grupo de Anillamiento Albacete).

CHESTNUT BUNTING* Emberiza rutila. FIRST FOR SPAIN. A female or 1st winter behaving wild and without any sign of coming from captivity was seen between Torregrossa and Juneda, Lleida, in a farm associated with finches on 23.12 (Joan Estrada, Toni Nievas, Anna Varea i Francesc Moncasí). On 24.12 an attempt to relocate it failed (Xavier Revés, Gerard Bota, T.Nievas, Eladi Ribes). The fact of not being a male and the extreme cold temperatures registered in E Europe could favour the wild origin hypothesis (editorial comment)Seen briefly on 25.12 at the same place (Francesc Moncasí)

Cold spell affecting the NE of Iberia on 14-20.12.2001
Snow even at sea-level from 14.12, with half Catalonia covered by snow. Local movements of following species noted. Also hundreds of casualties recorded in roads (lapwings, passerines, ...). Some raptors brought to recovery centers as well. Species involved (Catalonia): Rock Sparrow Petronia petronia, Woodlark Lullula arborea, Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs, Corn Bunting Miliaria calandra, Rock Bunting Emberiza cia, Cirl Bunting Emberiza cirlus, Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella (from observations of Emma Guinart, Ferran López, Marc Pérez, Sergi Sales, Xavier Larruy, Ricard Gutiérrez, Xavier Parellada). Situation not improving in Lleida province where hundreds of birds found injured or dead near roads ( Vallcalent recovery center pers com.). From 21.12 on strong campaign directed by catalan government at Lleida to provide food for passerines creating over a hundred feeding places and supplying tons of grain, fruits, corn, bread and others (J.Ruiz Olmo).
