(2) Cádiz. On 18.10 an adult male was seen and photographed at La Haba state, La Janda, Cádiz (Stephen Daly). See a photo collage below (S.Daly). According to the author, there are reasons to explain these records: "The reason for such frequent and increasing sightings could be attributed to changes in agricultural use in the former eastern block countries, particularly those countries formerly controlled within the Soviet Union. The steady progression of new and available breeding areas for Pallid Harriers to the West is a direct result of such agricultural change. Open steppe land has increased dramatically of what was formerly semi-usable farmland in areas along the great rolling plains of Kasakstan, Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. We can expect to see a progressive shift of breeding area and subsequent migratory birds taking routes southwards through Germany, France, Portugal and Spain via The Strait of Gibraltar to their wintering grounds in Africa". On 19.10 it was seen again (Javier Elorriaga). See a video in youtube here.On 20.10 it was seen and photographed again (S.Daly), see photos below. This bird was seen again on 26.10 (David Cuenca), see a thumbnail here.

(1) Alicante On 25.10 one was reported at Villena Steppe, Alicante (Barry Chambers and Malcolm Palmer): 'Barry Chambers and I were engaged in a (fruitless) search for sandgrouse near Villena, and at approximately 13.00, in full sunlight, we encountered, at some 20 metres’ range, a strange pipit. In general structure and size it recalled Water Pipit Anthus spinoletta, but the streaky back was dark. The underparts were well streaked, on what appeared to be a buffish base, darkening towards the belly, which was a rich buff colour. I noted a dark malar patch and there was an impression of white wing-bars. The legs appeared to be pale, but colour was difficult to ascertain. The bird fed in dry stony ground, and flew off, whence it was not relocated. I am convinced it was a Buff-bellied Pipiit, probably of the race japonicus.'
