Recent Reports: Latest sightings NOVEMBER 2001 * rarities needing homologation by the CR/SEO
Slavonian Grebe* Podiceps auritus. Three birds were at canal de ano, Santoña marshes, Cantabria, on 18.11 (Fernando Arce)At Bahía de la Concha, Donostia, Gipuzkoa, a bird was seen on 4.11.2001 (Pedro Cruzado).Four birds were at Montehano, Santoña, Cantabria (see a thumbnail here) on 21.11 (Delfín González).Still on 22.11 (JM Pérez de Ana) Great-white Egret Egretta alba. On 2.11, a bird was seen at Pals ricefields, Pals, Girona (Daniel Burgas). Two were at the same place on 4.11 (Daniel Burgas). Another bird was at Girona town on 9.11. It is presumably the same bird first located on 12.10 (Ponç Feliu).Eight were seen on 8.11 at Brazo del Este, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana). Like in previous months, the species is regular at Ebre delta, Tarragona (PNDE).3 birds were at Isla Mayor, Sevilla, on 10.11 (Paco Chiclana) and 13 at Brazo del Este on 15.11 (Paco Chiclana, C. Camacho y M.Martín).3 were at Vilaüt lagoon, Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Nat Park, Girona, on 20.11 (J.Martí, E.Guinart,T.Montràs, R.Gutiérrez, O.Clarabuch, B.Minobis).10 at Albufera de València from 16.10 (Bosco Díes). A bird was at Falces, Navarra on 18.11 (Lander Goñi, José Ardaiz)On 25.11 one was at Cerrado Garrido,Doñana, near some hunters...(Juan Ramón Súnico).At 'El Echo' near Guadalcazar,Córdoba there was one on 24.11(José Cañas). Glossy ibis Plegadis falcinellus. The usual overwintering/local party is around Buda island, Ebre delta, Tarragona with up to 74 birds (PNDE). On 15.11, c.200 birds were at Brazo del Este, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana, C. Camacho y M.Martín).At Brazo del Este, Sevilla, new count of 187+38 birds (Daniel L Huertas) and 275 birds plus on 29.11 (Daniel L Huertas) Yellow-billed Stork* Mycteria ibis. Escape (E list): the bird seen in Albufera de València in late september and early october (J.I. Díes) was still there. Check out october news for further data and images. On 28.11, a bird was seen at Villafáfila, Zamora (Alberto Hdez. y Carlos Aldea/ Seo/Salamanca) White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons. A bird was seen at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca, on 14.11 (Paco Cosme / SEO-Salamanca)A juvenile was found with 16 Greylag Geese Anser anser at Filipines marsh, Llobregat Delta, Barcelona on 17.11 (Ferran López), it was still there on 18.11 (Jordi Sala et al). Both were still present on 7-30.11 within a large flock of Pochards

joined the group on 28.11 (Aurea Acebes, Nacho Rodriguez & Carlos Zumalacárregui).
Ring-necked
duck* Aythya collaris. Surprising record: on 18.11, EIGHT birds
(4 males, 4 females) were seen with mallards, Tufted ducks A.fuligula,
pochards A.ferina,teals
A.crecca, and others at Balsa de
riego de Zuares del Páramo,León (David Miguelez y Alberto
Ramos). Still there on 20.11 (Carlos Zumalacarregui, Bruno Iglesias, Aurea
Acebes, Jorge Falagán, David Miguelez y Nacho Rodriguez). At La
Furta, Asturies, there was one female on 22.11 ( Elías García
Sánchez y José Antonio García Fernández ).A
female was seen on 25.11at the Embalse de Talavan, Extremadura (Pekka Komi
and Markku Saarinen)
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala. Large concentration: 500 birds at Laguna de Medina, Cádiz on 1.11 (Paco Chiclana). Other birds at northern limit of range: 9 birds at Charcones de Miguel Esteban on 3.11 and 5 at Pedro Muñoz lagoon, Ciudad real, on 4.11 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Ariadna Gutiérrez, Helena Arbonés, Gerard Gutiérrez) Purple Sandpiper Calidris maritima. Accidental in the Mediterranean. A first winter was seen at Fangar bay, Ebre delta, Tarragona on 3.11 (David Perpiñán, José Luis Copete, Mireia Martínez, Iván Muñoz, Dani Sanjosé, Jordi Montané i Anna López). There are photos.See two thumbnails here Lesser Yellowlegs* Tringa flavipes. TWO birds altogether in the Mediterranean coast: At Fondet de la Senieta, Elx, Alacant (Alicante, 38º16 N, 0º32W 30SYH160382),two birds were found on 17.11(Jacobo Ramos, Adolfo Quiles; Luís Fidel). They still were there on 18.11 (Elías Gomis, Antonio Jacobo, Adolfo Quiles et al). Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis. At marisma de A Ramallosa, Baiona, Pontevedra, a bird on 22.11 (probably only the 2nd or 3rd for Galicia, Adolfo Lomeña y Alberto Gil).Another on 24.11 at Miño river mouth, A Guarda, Pontevedra (JM Mariño and Alberto Gil) Terek Sandiper* Xenus cinereus. A bird was at El Fangar bay on 30.11 (David Bigas). It is probably the same bird that is lingering around the delta since June and that it has been seen intermitently. Rough-legged Buzzard* Buteo lagopus. A juvenile was seen near erms de la Tancada area, delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona, on 16.11. (David Bigas/PNDE) All accepted records for Spain come from Catalonia. Crested Coot. Fulica cristata. Out of range sightings: a bird wearing a collar-ring '1X' was from September and still there on 30.11 at Canal Vell lagoon, Ebre Delta, Tarragona (David Bigas, Sergi Sales). Semipalmated Sandpiper* Calidris pusilla: the juvenile moulting into 1st winter previously reported on September and October in this web page was observed again on 1.11 and 2.11 at the Porto dos Padroneses beach, Ogrobe (O Grove), Galiza (Galicia), just 1 km. W of the Esteiro de Terra de Porto, the 'traditional' site for this bird (Cosme Damiám Romai Cousido). It was observed again on 11.11 at the same area; sadly, it looks sick and weak, and it had got a cramp in one of its legs (César Vidal, Rafael Salvadores, Cosme Damiám Romai Cousido). Terek Sandpiper* Xenus cinereus Adult in winter plumage at the mudflats neat the Sancti Petri stream near the harbour, Chiclana de la Frontera, Cádiz, on 01.11.01 (SEO/Sevilla = Javier, David, Antonio, Jaime, José Antonio, Salud, Mila, Manolo, Mª José, José Manuel y Laura). The long-stayer bird at Ebre Delta, Tarragona, was last relocated on 5.11 at Tancada saltpans (David Bigas/PNDE). Grey Phalarope Phalaropus fulicaria. An adult was seen at close distance (15 m) from Arenilla hide, Santoña marshes, Cantabria, on 9.11 (Fernando Arce). Another had been on 4.11 at Fondo de Llitera ricefields, Lleida/Huesca but it was not seen subsequenty (pers.com to Toni Nievas/Nonapo). Ring-billed Gull* Larus delawarensis. 2 birds were seen at Plaiaundi, Gipuzkoa, on 9.11 (Gabriel Berasategui Echevarria).Two 2nd winters were at at Parque Isabel la Católica, Gijón/Xixón on 28.11 (Clemente Álvarez Usátegui) Sabine's Gull Larus sabini. At cabo Silleiro, Baiona, 5 adults were with 13 Rissa tridactyla on 29.11 (César Vidal) Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii. An adult mixed with other terns off Sancti Petri harbour, Chiclana de la Frontera, Cádiz, on 01.11.01 (SEO/Sevilla = Javier, David, Antonio, Jaime, José Antonio, Salud, Mila, Manolo, Mª José, José Manuel y Laura) Little Auk Alle alle. After the severe gales of 9-11.11, eleven birds are reported in the Atlantic coast, even inland. (avesforum) First bird was reported on 8.11 at Cariño, A Coruña (Miguel Hevia ). On 9.11, two birds fly overhead the observers at Punta de la Vaca, Asturies (Xurde Gayol). On 9.11 too, two birds were seen at close distance at Puerto Refugio de Hondarribia, Guipúzcoa (David Calleja Marcos y María Pérez Díaz). At Lluanco, Asturies, a bird was at the harbour on 10.11 (José Antonio García Cañal). The same day, three were off Cariño, A Coruña, one only 10 m from the shore (Luis José Salaverri Leiras, Ricardo Hevia) See a thumbnail here. Also on 10.11 an inland report (!): at embalse de SanAndrés, Xixón / Gijón c.10 Km. from the coast there was a bird apparently in good condition seen at close range (~3m)(J. Vicente Gonzalez ). At Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, one bird was seen on 12.11 (Antonio Sandoval).The two birds at Cariño were still there on 17.11 (Rafael Salvadores, Tito Salvadores, Adolfo Lomeña, Jose Manuel Mariño) Richard's pipit* Anthus richardi. One was seen again at Marjal del Moro, Sagunt, València, on 2.11 (Marcial Yuste).2 Richard's Pipits were seen at at Amarilla Golf, Tenerife, on 5.11 (Tony Clarke). Two birds were again at Marjal del Moro on 9.11(Marcial Yuste). They were still there on 13.11, one of the bird being the same first reported on 2.11 according to moult pattern (Marcial Yuste)On 18.11, 3 were found at Eucaliptus beach marshes, Ebre Delta, Tarragona (J.L. Copete, R.Armada).Seven individuals (at least 2 first winters) in fields near Vixan lagoon, PN Corrubedo, A Coruña on 25.11 (Rafa Salvadores, Tito Salvadores).At the same place, there were at least 6 birds on 26.11 (Delfín González).At Moro marsh, Sagunt, València, there were one on 28.11, 3 on 29.11 and one on 30.11 (Marcial Yuste). At Ebre Delta, Tarrragona, the birds found on 18.11 were relocated on 30.11 (but only two remaining) at the same place (David Bigas, Miquel Angel Franch). 'Tristis'

A bird was ringed at Canal Vell ringing station, Ebre Delta Natural Park, Tarragona, on 4.11 (Joan Antó, Sergi Sales, David Bigas, Xavier Riera, Sisco Vidal, Oriol Clarabuch/PNDE). Hume's Leaf Warbler* Phylloscopus humei. 1ST FOR SPAIN. A bird was seen in company of a putative (bird showing characters of) TRISTIS CHIFFCHAFF P.collybita tristis at Pont del Través, l'Encanyissada lagoon, Ebre Delta, Tarragona on 16.11 morning. Not seen afterwards (David Bigas/PNDE). Rosy (Rose-Coloured) Starling* Sturnus roseus. A bird was seen at Parcel.lacions de Son Pax Vell, Mallorca, Balearic islands, on 5.11(Rafel Mas) Snow Bunting Plectrophenax nivalis. Three birds were seen at punta de A Frouxeira, Valdoviño, A Coruña (Tito Salvadores, Rafa Salvadores, José Miguel Alonso Pumar, Luís José Salaverri) Pine Bunting* Emberiza leucocephalos. Fourth for Spain. A bird was seen at Cariño beach, A Coruña, on 2.11 (Tito Salvadores, Rafa Salvadores, José Miguel Alonso Pumar, Luís José Salaverri). A male, probably a first winter which was not relocated afterwards.
