(1) Tarragona One was seen at Buda island on 13.7 (David Bigas at ornitho.cat). On 14-15.7 it was seen again (D.Bigas).On 17.7 morning it was relocated from the Migjorn viewpoint (M.Gàlvez, J.Guerra,J.Tantull, R.Solé, A.Cama, M.Pauly; G.Rodríguez, M.García-Tarrasón, R.Gutiérrez).Not seen afterwards.

(2) Tarragona One was seen at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 15.7 (David Bigas at ornitho.cat).On 23.7 this or another bird was relocated again at Punta de la Banya entrance (Julio Pérez Cañestro; Josep Tantull, Roser Solé, Thomas Kupper). Not seen from mid morning to evening but relocated at the same place on 24.7 mid morning (Ricard Gutiérrez, Carolina García; Josep Tantull, Roser Solé; Albert Cama, Hannu Koskinen). (1) A Coruña. The presumed hybrid first reported earlier this year as a VIKING GULL Larus hyperboreus x argentatus later as a 'Benson's' (

Lesser Crested Tern Sterna bengalensis (1,2,3,4-5,6,7,8-9)
(1) Tarragona There was an adult at el Trabucador sandbar, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 3.7 (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé). See a photo below. On 9.7 morning it had moved to Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé) but it was not relocated in the evening from the Banya entrance (ed.comment).

(2) Valencia There was one adult on 11.7 at Racó de l'Olla reserve, l'Albufera de Valencia (Valencia) (J.I.Dies) (more info at http://www.birdingalbufera.es/?q=es/node/436/195).

(3) Cádiz. On 15.7 there was one at Montijo beach, Chipiona, Cádiz (Paco Chiclana). See a photo below (P.Chiclana).

(4-5) Cádiz. On 18.7 there were 2 different birds from bird (3) at Montijo beach, Chipiona, Cádiz. See a photo below (Rafael García Costales, Fernando Enrique y Yeray Seminario).

(6) Huelva. On 18.7 there was one ringed bird at Doñana beach, Huelva (Carlos Gutiérrez Expósito).This bird had been ringed at Gara island, Libia two years and 10 days before.

(7) Almería. On 31.7 one was seen in a tern breeding colony at Cabo de Gata, Almería (Delfín González)

(8-9) Cádiz. There were 2 on passage through Straits of Gibraltar, at Tarifa,Cádiz (Carlos Torralvo/Fundación Migres)

(1-2) Valencia There were two adults of yellow-billed tern recalling Elegant Tern during the breeding season and until recently at Albufera de Valencia, Valencia where they have bred with a Sandwich tern (J.I.Dies et al). See photos below and a full chronicle at birdingalbufera.es
.These birds were seen during the week 18-23.7 at Ebre delta (T.Kupper) but on 23.7 an unringed bird, very red-billed and presumably the individual of Valencia was seen and photographed at Tarragona harbour (Albert Cama, Hannu Koskinen). The PVC ringed bird was seen at Sterna sp.cf.elegans.The PVC ringed individual seen this season at Valencia was seen on 24.7 at desembocadura del Rio San Pedro, orilla de Los Toruños,Pto Sta Maria, Cadiz (Manuel Jiménez) and on 26.7 (Rafa García, Fernando del Valle, Mario Martín & Paco Chiclana).

(3) Murcia. Another individual, presumably different from (1-2)was at Salinas de Marchamalo, Murcia on 28-30.7 (Richard Howard). This bird may have bred in Murcia paired to a Sandwich during these months according to some authors (ed. comment). See two thumbnails here (Richard Howard)

(1) A Coruña There was an adult off Estaca de Bares, A Coruña on 9.7 (Antonio Sandoval, David Martínez Lago).

(2-4) Cádiz. On 11.7 there were 3 at Montijo beach, Chipiona, Cádiz (Paco Chiclana). On the following days smaller amount of birds were seen in that beach or nearby beaches of Cádiz province but no way of knowing if those are different birds or the same initial 3: 1 bird on 12.7 at La Jara beach, San Lucar de Barrameda; 2 birds on 13.7 at Montijo beach, Chipiona and one bird on 14.7 at Montijo beach, Chipiona, see a photo below (Paco Chiclana).On 18.7 one was seen at Montijo beach, Chipiona (Rafal García Costales, Fernando Enrique y Yeray Seminario)

(5) Cádiz. On 23.7 there was one at Desembocadura del río San Pedro, El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz (Manuel Jiménez). On 24.7 it was photographed. It was an adult carrying two metal rings (Rafael García Costales). See a photo below.Seen again on 31.7 (Alberto Savijn)

Cádiz. On 2.7 there were six birds at Chipiona, Cádiz (Manuel Jiménez, Pablo Barrena, Alberto Álvarez, Carlos J. Moreno, Juan Carlos Teruel, Antonio Acedo, Paco Chiclana y Rafael García).
On 14.7 there were 23 birds at Chipiona, Cádiz (Paco Chiclana).

(7-9)Cádiz. From 8-10.7 there were 3 birds within Tarifa municipality (José Luis Anguita). Five birds perhaps incuding these 3 were seen in the Sierra de la Plata area, Tarifa on 14.7 (Javier Elorriaga).This location has become another breeding site for Little Swift in S Spain when on 24-29.7 breeding is confirmed at least in two nests monitored until the end of the month (José Luís Anguita; Javier Misas y familia, José Antonio Sarrión, Alberto Savijn; Virginia Moreno, Salomé del Campo y familia).See two photos below (nest 1 and nest 2)

(10-11) Cádiz. Five birds incuding these 2 were seen in the Sierra de la Plata area, Tarifa on 14.7 (Javier Elorriaga).

(12-29) Cádiz. On 14.7 there were 23 birds at Chipiona, Cádiz (Paco Chiclana).See a thumbnail here.Two of those remained in the area on 18.7 midday (Rafael García Costales).

Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent.Photos could be cropped for editorial reasons.Gibraltar news are included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with anew icon.
