(1-2) A Coruña . The two drakes from December, remained at Sabon reservoir, Arteixo, A Coruña on 2.1 (Albert Cama, Matxalen Pauly; Xabier Varela; Fernando Pereiras). The birds were still there on 9 and 13.1 (Xabier Varela).Still there on 15.1; one of these birds was attacked twice by a drake Eurasian teal (Cosme D. Romai, Atocha Ramos). (3) Asturies . The drake found at ria de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies on 30.12 was still there on 7-13.1 (Adolfo Villaverde) and on 21.1 (A.Villaverde)

(4) A Coruña . The drake found on 16.11 at embalse de As Forcadas, Valdoviño, A Coruña was still there on 16.1 (Ricardo Hevia).

The 1w bird seen last month at Riocaldo lagoons, Begonte, Lugo was still in the lagoon on 4.1 (Ricardo Hevia, Jesús Rios).Also still there on 11.1 (Toño Salazar) and 15.1 (Serafín Alarcón, Fernando Pereiras, J.L. Fernández Carnero y Serafín Alarcón, Fernando Pereiras, J.L. Fernández Carnero y Toño Salazar).

(3) León. A female was found at azud de Sahechores, León, on 15.1 (Héctor Astiárraga Soraya de Elera)

(4) A Coruña . One of the 2 females found at As Forcadas reservoir, Valdoviño, A Coruña on 29.12 remained there on 27.1 (Ricardo Hevia).

(5) A Coruña . The other of the 2 females seen last month at As Forcadas reservoir, Valdoviño, A Coruña was seen at Doniños lagoon, A Coruña on 27.12 (Francisco Girón) to 29.1 (Toño Salazar).

(6) Madrid. A female was found at Presa del Rey, Río Jarama. Rivas-Vaciamadrid, Madrid, on 29.1 (Rubén Moreno-Opo). See a thumbnail obtained with a phone through the scope here. On 9.1 one was found at La Torrecilla pond,EX-108 road, San Gil, Plasencia, Cáceres (Sergio Mayordomo; Ricardo Montero y Javier Prieta).See a thumbnail here and more photos in this flickr album. (3-8) Lugo-Asturies . The group seen last month between ria del Eo and ria de Foz were seen again on 9.1 at the latter, Lugo (Marcos Otero, Catuxa Varela). On 15-16.1 they were betwen La Linera, Castropol, Asturies (15.1, Víctor M. Vázquez y Teresa Sánchez Corominas) and 16.1 (José Antonio García Pérez, Inés Fernández Alameda) at ensenada de Vilavedelle, Castropol.

(10-14) València. Five birds reached Tavernes de La Valldigna, València on 8.1 (José Ramón Cancer). Later moved to Cullera bay from 10.1 (Bosco Dies & Toni Alcocer) where they remained at least until 12.1 (Josep Puentes Higuera, Vicent Esteller Turlo) and 14.1.2011 (Josep Puentes, Vicent Esteller, Miguel Piera, José Luís Terrasa, Pepe Ruiz, et al). (15) A Coruña. On 16.1 there was one at Santa Cruz beach, Oleiros, A Coruña (Sergio Paris, Fernando Pereiras).See a photo in Sergio's blog here. This bird was seen again on 23.1 (Tucho López Porto)

(16) Madrid. On 16.1 one was found at Embalse de Valmayor, Madrid (José Antonio López Constante,Ángel Pérez Menchero,Juan Carlos Álvarez Ruiz, Óscar Llama). The 1st for Madrid.

(17) Lleida. On 22.1 the bird found on 27.12 at Pantà Gran d'Alcarràs, Lleida was still there (Jaume Bonfil). Still there on 26.1 (Sergi Sales)

(18) Cáceres. On 21.1 a bird was found at Tiétar river, Monfragüe, Cáceres (José María Benítez). The bird was still there on 23.1 when it was confirmed to be different from individual (2)(Sergio Mayordomo, Manuel García del Rey, Martin Kelsey et al). Also there on 31.1 (Martin Kelsey)

(19) Bizkaia. About 15.1 one was found at Nervión river, Bilbaoi, Bizkaia (Miguel de las Heras). It was seen again at the same river but at Etxebarri on 24.1 (Iván Sarabia) and 25.1 (C.Negueruela, JL Pacheco; Iván Sarabia). See a photo below and thumbnails here (Iván Sarabia). (20) Bizkaia. On 25.1 one was found at El Abra, Santurtzi, Bizkaia (Gorka Ocio).On 26.1 moved within the Abra area to Lamiako (Gorka Ocio).

Lugo. The bird seen regularly at Riocaldo lagoons, Begonte, Lugo was still present in the area on 2.1 (Albert Cama, Matxalen Pauly) and 4.1 (Ricardo Hevia, Jesús Rios). Also still there on 11.1 (Toño Salazar) and 15.1 (Serafín Alarcón, Fernando Pereiras, J.L. Fernández Carnero y Serafín Alarcón, Fernando Pereiras, J.L. Fernández Carnero y Toño Salazar).This bird was seen again on 20.1 (LJ Salaverri), 22.1 (David Calleja) and 25.1 when it showed clearly its ringed bill (Luis José Salaverri)

(2) A Coruña. During the wildfowl and waterbird census count on 20.1, a 'larger than a Teal grebe, with a pale bill but without ring' [...zampullín más grande que una cerceta, pardo de color, con pico de pollo pero sin anillo en él...] was seen at Sobrado dos Monxes lagoon, A Coruña (Ignacio Munilla y José Guitián communicated to LJ Salaverri). The latter author commented that the bird had to be a Pied-billed Grebe but the record was not verified until 23.1 when seen again (Agustín Alcalde, Roberto Figueiras, Francisco Carballo). On 25.1 it was seen again and photographed plus videotaped (Luis José Salaverri), demonstrating that there are two simultaneous birds in Galicia. See a photo and video below (LJ Salaverri).

(2) Alicante The adult Greater Spotted Eagle at El Hondo Nature Reserve was seen again on 2.1 (Graham Critchell). (1) Lanzarote A 1w American Oystercatcher was reported on 31.12.2010 at a marsh just to the west of La Santa sports complex, Lanzarote (Gordon Kirk). It was not relocated afterwards after several searches. The report was submitted to the Spanish RC.

(1) Tarragona. On 18.1 one 1w was found within the Dunlin flocks at La Comandanta ricefields, Sant Jaume d'Enveja, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (David Bigas et al). Perhaps this is the unidentified (due to the brief sighting) Calidris seen there on 8.1 (Cristian Jensen, Àlex Estellé). On 19.1 it was relocated and photographed (A.Cama, V.Pedrocchi, D.Imbernón; R.Gutiérrez, A.Ramal). And it remained in the area on 20.1 (Toni Alonso) and 21.1 (Manolo García-Tarrasón; Sergi Sales) to 23.1 (José Guerra, Marc Gàlvez, Roser Solé, Josep Tantull et al). Iceland Gull Larus glaucoides (1)

(1) Pontevedra. On 1.1 the same resident bird of 3rd winter reported along 2010 was present at Arenal de Calzoa, Coruxo, Vigo (Quique Carballal). See photos and video in Quique's blog here. Still there on 14.1 when photographed (Xulio Valeiras). See three photos below and a thumbnail here.

Glaucous Gull Larus hyperboreus (1,2,3,4)
(1) A Coruña. There was a 1w at Playa de Pantín, Valdoviño, A Coruña on 4.1 (José Vidal). See a thumbnail here (Antonio Gutiérrez)

(2) A Coruña. There was a presumed hybrid VIKING GULL Larus hyperboreus x argentatus at Praia de Bens, A Coruña, on 2.1 (Fernando Pererias). This bird had been seen this winter too and its id has been object of some debate. See a couple of thumbnails here .Last seen again on 7.1 (José R. Sánchez Bugallo).

(3) A Coruña. The 1w previously featured at Bens beach (see last month
report) was relocated in the nearby Illa Redonda on 15.1, during the Mid-Winter Waterbird Census (Cosme D. Romai, Atocha Ramos). See two thumbnails here.

(1) Girona The 1w found at the Perxistor area, Sant Feliu de Buixalleu, Girona on 26.12, relocated on 29.12 and ringed on 30.12 was still in the area on 1.1 (Carles Grande; Marc Pérez López; Sergi Torné et al) and 2.1 (Àlex Ollé, Pau Calero, Jordi Martí-Aledo et al; Marcel Gil et al). (1-6) A Coruña. At Baldaio wetland, six birds were observed on 1.1, feeding on a sandy area between the northern lagoon and the channel (Albert Cama, Matxalen Pauly, Atocha Ramos, Cosme D. Romai; David Martínez Lago, Fernando Pereiras, Ignacio Fernández Otero, Xabi Varela). Five birds remained there on 14.1 (Xavier Varela).Four were there on 27.1 (Ángel Sallent y Crhistoph Roland) and five were still there on 29.1 (Xabier Varela; Toño Salazar)

(7-27) Cantabria. At Langre,Cantabria there was a flock of minimum 21 birds probably 25-30 individuals on 8.1 (Guillermo Rodríguez). On 13.1 there were 24 birds (José Ardaiz, Alberto Estefanía y Jesús Menéndez; Ricardo Rodríguez et al). Recent reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent.Photos could be cropped for editorial reasons.Gibraltar news are included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with anew icon.
