Birds in Spain
Recent Reports: Latest sightings OCTOBER 2001 * rarities needing homologation by the CR/SEO Pied-Billed Grebe* Podilymbus podiceps. The long stayer (over 2 years) was relocated in winter plumage at La Grajera reservoir, la Rioja, on 5.10 (Ignacio Gámez) Fulmar Fulmarus glacialis. Scarce in the Atlantic coast. Four birds were seen off Santoña, Cantabria, on 10.10 (Karmelo de Dios) Little Shearwater* Puffinus assimilis. A bird was seen from Estaca de Bares flying offshore on 13.10 (Antonio Sandoval). Mediterreanean Shearwater Puffinus yelkouan. Scarce except in the very NE coast of Spain. About 60 birds (for c.10 Balearic Shearwaters P.mauretanicus and some Calonectris diomedea) were seen off Cap de Creus, Girona, on 20.10 under severe sea conditions (Ponç Feliu, Jordi Martí, Ricard Gutiérrez, Emma Guinart, Mireia Jiménez and 31 more observers).Photopage of these sightings Great-white
Egret Egretta alba. Five birds (3 last month) were on 1.10 at
Remolar-Filipines reserve, Llobregat Delta, Barcelona (Armand Ramal).Four
were at Marjal del Moro (Moro Marsh), Sagunt, València, on
1-2.10, but two on 3.10 (Marcial Yuste).The bird reported at pantano de
San Andrés, Asturies, was still there on 10.10 (Clemente Álvarez
Usategui).There were one at brazo del Este, Sevilla on 6.10 and two at
Llobregat Delta, Barcelona on 8.10 -but not on 9.10- (Armand Ramal).On
13.10, two were at a meadow near Villanueva de San Mancio, Valladolid,
with 29 White Storks Ciconia ciconia (Alejandro Tores). Seven birds
were at S'Albufera de Mallorca on 14.10 (Maties Rebassa). And at Ascó,
Tarragona, there was a single individual at the Ebre river the same day
(Lluís Josa and Pere Josa Anguera).3 birds were at Brazo del Este,
Sevilla, on 15.10 (Daniel L Huertas).There was a bird at Marjal del Moro
on 15.10 (Marcial Yuste).A bird (the same?) was seen both in 7 and 21.10
at gravera del Porcal, Rivas-Vaciamadrid (Miguel Juan Martínez).On
14.10, a bird entered within a Cattle Egret roost in Ter river, Torroella
de Montgrí, Girona (Daniel Burgas).Some birds around Albufera de
València (Nacho Díes) on 25.10. A bird was at Marjal del
Moro, València, on 24.10 (Marcial Yuste).A bird seen at Filipines
marsh, Llobregat Delta, Barcelona, on 22-23.10 (Armand Ramal).14 birds
were in a flock at Ebro delta, Tarragona, on 4.10 (Olaf Zeiske). A single
bird remained at Marjal del Moro on 25.10 (M.Yuste).22 October. 5 (min)
at Brazo del Este (Sevilla). Also 7 Black Storks Ciconia nigra there. Glossy
Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. A bird was at Marjal del Moro (Moro
Marsh), Sagunt, València, on 1-3.10 (Marcial Yuste).There were 9
birds at Brazo del Este, Sevilla, on 10.10 (Daniel L.Huertas) A bird was
seen only on 14.10 at Remolar-Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta, Barcelona
(Armand Ramal).5 birds were in a single flock at Buda island, Ebro delta,
on 4.10 (Olaf Zeiske). Two birds were at Marjal del Moro, Sagunt València
on 25.10 (Marcial Yuste). Yellow-billed Stork* Mycteria ibis. Presumably escape (E list): a bird was seen in Albufera de València in late september and early october (J.I. Díes)The bird seems to be related to an escape from Safari Park El Vergel (Alicante) in february 2000. This area held another bird on 7-13.11.2000 (see november 2000 report), the same individual coming from a collection. Now the bird is in perfect plumage condition but it is confirmed as an escape.Still there on 25.10 (Nacho Díes). White-fronted
Goose Anser albifrons. A bird was at embalse de Urkulu, Aretxabaleta,
Gipuzkoa on 21.10 (Amaia Iribar y Argiñe Muruamendiaraz). Pale-bellied Brent Goose* Branta bernicla hrota An adult was present at Cicero marshes, Santoña, on 10.10 (Karmelo de Dios). American Wigeon* Anas americana. At Cicero marshes, Santoña, Cantabria, there was a male not in breeding plumage on 4.10 (Karmelo de Dios).Still there on 10.10 (Karmelo de Dios).A female was at Guadalhorce river mouth on 21.10 (Andy Paterson) Marbled Teal Marmaronetta angustirostris. Scarce breeder and resident species. 33 birds were at Brazo del Este, Sevilla, on 6.10 (Paco Chiclana). A male was at Marjal del Moro, Sagunt, València, on 9.10 (Marcial Yuste) Scaup Aythya marila. A female was seen at embalse de Selga de Ordás, León, from 4.10 until 23.10 (Carlos Zumalacárregui, Aurea Acebes, David Ramos y Nacho Rodriguez) Long-tailed duck Clangula hyemalis. 3 females were seen flying off faro del Pescador, Santoña, Cantabria on 18.10 (Karmelo de Dios, Gorka Ocio) Crested Coot Fulica cristata. 13 birds were at laguna Hondilla, Espera, Cádiz on 6.10. Some of them came from a reintroduction scheme (Paco Chiclana)At Marjal del Moro. Sagunt, València, there were five birds on 15.10 but nine had been seen all the week long (Marcial Yuste). 21 October. 20 on the Laguna de Medina (Cadiz), including a party of 9 and a pair with two fortnight-old young. Also 2 on the Marismas de Trebujena. None had neck collars (Ernest Garcia) Rüppell's Vulture Gyps rueppellii. Again, a number of sightings around the straits of Gibraltar: there were 3 birds at Santuario, Cádiz on 4.10 (observadores: Jesús Castilla, Javier Elorriaga, Carlos Noivo, Paloma Lucena, Laura Martínez, Fernando Gallego, Jaime Martín, Maria José Patiño, Antonio, Bea Ramos, Amara Lastres y Alfredo Castilla). Ten minutes before this sighting another bird was seen at Algarrobo observation point, Algeciras, at c.15 km from this point there was another ( not juvenile) flying with Griffon Vultures (Javier Elorriaga, Fernando Gallego y Antonio). Furthermore, on 28.9.2001at Cazalla birdwatching point (between Algeciras and Tarifa)another juvenile was seen (Octavio Infante, Belén, Laura Martínez y Javier Elorriaga). On 7.10.2001, also at Cazalla, a non-juvenile bird with damaged plumage was noted (Javier Elorriaga, Jaime Martín, Maria José Patiño y Fernando Gallego). Hence, a total of 6 different birds have been seen in the area from 28.10 - 7.10.2001 Long-legged
Buzzard* Buteo rufinus. A bird was reported from La Lantejuela,
Sevilla, on 16.10 (Paco Chiclana).20 October.1 probably 2 on the Plain
of La Janda, about 5 km west of Facinas, and another definite individual
in the Ojen valley, (Cadiz). All classic B.r.cirtensis. These birds
are likely to
White-rumped Sandpiper* Calidris fuscicollis: juvenile reported on 12.10 at Enseada da Ínsua, Ponte-Ceso, Galicia (Galiza), near Ponte-Ceso urban centre and close to a small, old bridge upon the river, in a small marsh (José Luis Rabuñal Patiño via César Vidal Rodríguez). Another adult moulting to winter plumage found at Fondo de Llitera rice-fields, Huesca-Lleida, on 16.10 (Steve West).These two records coincide with a strong influx to the Açores islands, where e.g there were 25 altogether in Terceira Cabo de Praia quarry these days (Jordi Martí). Pectoral Sandpiper* Calidris melanotos. A juvenile was at laguna de Boada de Campos, Palencia on 5.10 (Enrique Gómez Crespo).A bird was seen at Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park on 9.10 (Marc Gàlvez and Natalia Corcoll). Semipalmeated
Sandpiper* Calidris pusilla. A juvenile moulting to first winter
was seen on 9.10 at Laxe de Rons (less than 1 Km from Terra de Porto where
two birds seen in September), O Grove, Pontevedra, thus possibly one of
the previously seen birds (Juan Carlos Cabrero Figueiro). The juvenile
previously featured from 12.9 to 16.9 and also from 26.9 to 29.9
is observed again on 13.10 (now moulting into 1st winter) at Esteiro
de Terra de Porto, O Grove (Ogrobe), Galicia (Galiza) mixed with
several waders (including 9 Curlew Sandpipers Calidris ferruginea,
6 Common Sandpipers Actitis hypoleucos, 15-20 Ruddy Turnstones Arenaria
interpres and also a light, quite odd juvenile Little Stint Calidris
minuta moulting into 1st winter). Several photos were taken at a close
range (3 meters) (Cosme Damiám Romai Cousido). NOTE: It's likely
that bird reported at Laxe de Rons marsh on 9.10 (just 1 km. west
from Terra de Porto) would be the same that observed now.The juvenile moulting
into 1st winter previously featured
Upland Sandpiper* Bartramia longicauda. 2ND FOR SPAIN. A bird was seen at Cal Tet, Llobregat Delta, Barcelona, the afternoon of 4.10 (Xavier Larruy). There was an attempt of relocation on 5.10 withouth success (F.López, X.Macià,J.Castelló). See a photo of the place where it was located (1024x768 pixels, 117 Kb); (800x600 pixels, 76 Kb) . No more news on Saturday the 6th. Jose Luís Arroyo tells us news from a former record of a bird reported at Anuario Ornitológico de Doñana Nº0: "Una sola cita, de un ave anillada en Pellstom (Michigan, EE.UU.) y recuperada por J. Ayala en Los Palacios (Sevilla)el 2 de diciembre de 1988." thus a bird ringed in Michigan, USA, recovered on 2.12.1988 in Doñana that was regrettably never submitted to the Spanish RC. Lesser Yellowlegs* Tringa flavipes.Two altogether at Galicia on 20-21.10. One at Laguna de Traba, Laxe and the other at Estuario da Insua,Ponteceso (José Luís Rabuñal Patiño; Antonio Sandoval).Still one bird at Ponteceso on 28.10 (see thumbnail, same observers).Interestingly, another bird was at Ponte de Lima, Viana do Castelo (15 Km. S of Portuguese/Spanish border, thus in Portugal) (Miguel Cardoso) American Herring Gull* Larus argentatus smithsonianus. A first winter was at a beach near Punta das Olas, Caion, Laracha, A Coruña on 7.10 (Antonio Sandoval) Glaucous Gull* Larus hyperboreus An adult bird is observed on 10.10 at the port of Malpica de Bergantinhos, Galicia (Galiza) (José Luís Rabuñal Patiño via César Vidal Rodríguez)..Still there on 27.10 (Rafael Salvadores, Tito Salvadores y J.Manuel Mariño). Caspian Tern Sterna caspia. A juvenile was seen flying off Marjal del Moro (Moro Marsh), Sagunt, València, on 1-2.10 (Marcial Yuste) Lesser-Crested
Tern Sterna bengalensis. A bird was seen at Tabarca Island,
Alicante from 2-5.10 (A. Jacobo Ramos; Sergio
White-rumped Swift Apus caffer. Two over Benquerencia in the Sierra de Castuera, Badajoz, with 20+ Alpine Swifts Apus melba and numerous hirundines, on 24 October. Four over the Castle at Monfrague,Caceres on 25.10 (Ernest Garcia). Richard's
pipit* Anthus richardi. One was seen at Marjal del Moro, Sagunt,
València, on 12.12 (Marcial Yuste).A first winter bird, having moulted
all median coverts to adult pattern but retaining worn juvenile-like tertials
was found at cal Tet marshes, Llobregat delta, Barcelona, on 17.10 (Xavier
Larruy et al.; Ricard Gutiérrez, Ferran López, Xesco
Macià, Marc Iranzo, F.Xavier Santaeufemia).

seen afterwards.On 23.10, 3 birds (at least two first-winter individuals)
at Can Comes meadows, Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park (Jordi
Martí, Sergi Romero) where they have been searched for the afternoon
of 20.10 without luck. Red-throated pipit Anthus cervinus. An adult was seen at Matà ricefields, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà on 20.10 (Xavi Escobar and Moisés Moreno). Two-barred Greenish Warbler* Phylloscopus trochiloides plumbeitarsus . A bird, seen at very close range and identified in the field as 1st winter Two-barred (plumbeitarsus), was found at Moro marsh, Sagunt, València, on 22.10 (Marcial Yuste). There are no more claims of this form in Spain although a few other Greenish have been seen, mainly in Asturies.Not seen the following day. Snow Bunting Plectrophenax nivalis. An adult female was present at Punta La Vaca, Lluanco, Gozón, Asturies on 3.10 (Clemente Álvarez Usátegui) Snow
Finch Montifringilla nivalis. In order to collect data from this
scarce species, we'll include in the next months all received data from
it. Data from Asturies: Late august 200, about 50 birds at Ubiña
mountains, 30.8.2001.c.30 birds in the same place,
