reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are
both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail
lists. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors of the
records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with .
Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea. A bird (of the form borealis, C.Gutiérrez Expósito, in litt.) was found in bad condition well inland in Alberite, La Rioja on 4.5. This area is c.120 km inland in a S direction from the Atlantic coast. It certainly was a brid drifted by severe gales in the Atlantic (Ignacio Gámez Carmona).
Great Shearwater Puffinus gravis. A bird was seen off cabo Fisterra, Fisterra, A Coruña on 20.5 (Antonio Sandoval). See also below.
Sooty Shearwater Puffinus griseus. 1-2 Tarifa beach, Cádiz on 22.5 (along with at least 50 Cory's S., 30 Mediterranean S., 30 Gannet, 1 Storm Petrel and a very probable Great Shearwater(Joakim, Elisabeth and Adrian Djerf)
Fulmar Fulmarus glacialis . A bird was seen off cabo Fisterra, Fisterra, A Coruña on 20.5 (Antonio Sandoval)
Great White Egret Egretta alba One was seen at the Llobregat Delta, Barcelona, on 15.5.01 (Ferran López)Last census from Ebro Delta (late april) still gives 32 birds (PNDE). A yellow-billed bird was at Cáceres on 11.5 (Javier Prieta et al)A bird was at llobregat Delta on 25.5 (Mike O'Neal, Audrey Baker)
Western Reef Egret* Egretta gularis . A dark phase bird was seen at Punta de la Banya, Ebro delta, Tarragona, on 25.5 (Jordi Ruiz, Toni Batet, Ferran Blanch)
Marabou*Leptoptilos crumeniferus. A bird was in the outskirts of El Rocio in Doñana on 3.5 (Anders Andersson). A bird was seen near Artesa de Segre, Lleida on 1.5. This was probably the same bird having been recorded from S.Joan de Vinyafescal (just S of Pobla de Segur, in the Pyrenees) and through the Noguera county, Lleida, the last months (Jordi Trullols).
Lesser Flamingo* Phoenicopterus minor. The bird featured in previous months was still at Villacañas, Toledo on 12.5 (Alfonso López). An adult bird was observed on 13.5 at O Bao (Váu) marshes, Enseada de Ogrobe, Galicia (Galiza). This bird was quite distrusted and unringed, and the authors think it may be of a wild origin. This is the first record from Galiza and also the first for NW Iberia. (Maria Dominguez, Cosme Damiám Romai , Emilio Martinez Sabaris and others). Still there on 14 and 15.5, and observed again on 16.5 at the nearby Enseada da Fianteira, Sao Genjo (Sanxenxo), Galiza (Galicia). Since this date no records were annoted(Jorge -Xurxo- Pinheiro, Juan Carlos Cabrero Figueiro, Emílio Martínez Sabarís and others).
Whistling Swan* Cygnus cygnus A single bird was at embalse de Cecebre, A Coruña, on 20.05 (Diego de Nóvoa, Xosé Pardavila, GonzaloMucientes).This bird came from a recovery center from where it was released about 15.5 after a two weeks stay in that 'Centro de Recuperacion de Fauna Salvaje de la Xunta de Galicia en Santa Cruz' at Oleiros, A Coruña. The bird was trapped in a fishing vessel while fishing off NW Ireland and was carrying a metal ring with Icelandic address (Miguel Maestro/ GN Hábitat)
Pink footed-goose* Anser brachyrhynchus. The bird found in autumn 2000 was still at Cecebre reservoir on 27.5 (Miguel Maestro/ GN Hábitat). I wonder on this bird origin (Editorial note).
Ruddy Shelduck* Tadorna ferruginea 2 females were at embalse de Santillana, Madrid, on 5.5 (Gabriel Martin Garcia). A female with a ring on its left leg was at Ria de Foz, Lugo, on 23.5 (Luis José Salaverri Leiras).
American Black Duck*Anas rubipres. At Ria de Foz, Lugo, the overwintering bird remained there on 29.5 (Luis José Salaverri Leiras).
Marbled Teal Marmaronetta angustirostris. 2 pairs were 1 km north of Lucio Cerrado Garrido and another at Lucio del Lobo, Doñana, Huelva on 5.5 (Ulrik Lotberg)2 pairs were near El Rocío on 5.5 (Greg McIvor)Four pairs were seen in Moro marsh, Sagunt, València, on 15.5 (Marcial Yuste): one of those with 18 chicks on 29.5 (Marcial Yuste)On 27.5 a female with chicks was seen at Clot de Galvany pond, Alicante (AHSA) being the 4st year in a row in which the species breeds there.
American Wigeon* Anas americana. Two birds (a 1st winter male and a female) were observed and photographed next to a female Eurasian Wigeon (Anas penelope) and several drake Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) on 01.05 at San Claudio (Sao Clodio), Ria de Ortigueira (Galicia - Galiza), during the low tide in a marshes/mudflats area. (Carlos Luciarte, Albert Burgas, Xesús Morales, Cosme Damiám Romai).
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca. A pair was at Azud de Riolobos, Salamanca, on 22.5 (Juan Carlos Guerra). There was another at Marjal del Moro, Sagunt, València on 17.5 (Marcial Yuste)
Scaup* Aythya marila A pair was seen at lago de Valdoviño, A Coruña, on 30.5 (Antonio Gutiérrez)
Ring-necked Duck* Aythya collaris. A female was still at laguna de la Nava, Palencia, on 2.05 (Enrique Gómez Crespo)
Smew* Mergellus albellus. On 19.5 afternoon, a bird was found at Son Ferriol, Mallorca, Balearics (Manolo Suárez/GOB).
Spotted Eagle* Aquila clanga 'fulvescens'. One pale bird was seen from Congost de Montrebei, Lleida, on 22.5 (Joan Estrada, Miquel Rafa)
Black-Winged Kite* Elanus caeruleus. Extralimital record: in Huesca province, a pair was mating and nest-building on 18.5 (José Mª Canudo). This species had bred there in 1998.
Long-legged Buzzard* Buteo rufinus. A probable cirtensis bird was at Coto Doñana area on 5.5 (Greg McIvor)
Baillon's Crake Porzana pusilla. The bird heard on 30.4 at Remolar-Filipines reserve, Llobregat Delta, was still there on 2.5 (Ferran López)
Crested Coot Fulica cristata. 1 pair with 2 chicks + 1 ad + 1 (heard calling) in Donana on 20.5 + (only). 1 ad Laguna Medina (though midday...) 21.5. All adult birds we saw still had their obvious red knobs more or less intact.(Joakim, Elisabeth and Adrian Djerf).
Greater Yellowlegs Tringa melanoleuca. The record long-staying bird at ria de Ortigueira, Galicia, was still there (from last century) on 6.5 (Pablo Gutiérrez / STERNA) It was last seen on 13.5 (Pablo Gutiérrez / STERNA).
Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis. One was at Llobregat Delta on 14.5 (Ferran López).
White-rumped Sandpiper* Calidris fuscicollis. A bird was found at Salobrar de Campos, Mallorca, on 29.5 (Joan Riera)
Sandpiper* Calidris melanotos. A 1st summer bird, probably a
male, was seen at Aiguamolls de l'Empordà NP on 2.05 (Jordi Martí,
Daniel Burgas, Berto Minobis, Sergi Romero). Still visible at estany d'Europa
on 4.5 (Ponç Feliu, Teresa Montràs, Jordi Martí).

Franklin's Gull* Larus pipixcan. One fist winter moulting into first summer bird seen at Cal Roc, Llobregat Delta, Barcelona from 11.5 (Joan Castelló, Xesco Macià, Marc Iranzo; R.Gutiérrez; F.López) to 13.5 at least (Juan Becarés). Lesser Crested Tern Sterna bengalensis. 2 ads. at Tarifa beach on 24.5 - the birds were together with two Sandwich Terns, flying around and also sometimes rested on buoys. One of the birds were actually "courting" the other, eg. picking on the others bill etc. (Joakim, Elisabeth and Adrian Djerf).
Roseate tern Sterna dougallii. An adult breeding bird was at El Abra, Getxo, Bizkaia on 10.5 (Gorka Ocio).
White-winged Black Tern Chlydonias leucopterus. Two adults were at Lucio del Lobo, Doñana, Huelva on 5.5 (Ulrik Lotberg). Another at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona, about 19.5 (Jord Martí/PNAE)
Laughing Dove* Streptopelia senegalensis. Two birds at Guadalhorce river mouth, Málaga on 6.5 (Geoerges Olioso, Mike Clarke & Andrew Paterson)
Black-headed Yellow Wagtail* Motacilla flava feldegg. A bird was seen at pla de les Gates, Cap de Creus Natural Park, Girona, on 5.5 within a group of 12 Yellow wagtails of the ssps. flava and thunbergi (Jordi Martí)
Red-throated Pipit Anthus cervinus. Over 5 birds at Estany de Vilaüt, PN Aiguamolls, Girona, on 6.5 (Marc Peris, Julián Carrera). On 6.5, one bird was 500 m SV El Rocio, Doñana, Huelva (Ulrik Lotberg)One was seen in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, the week of 7-13.5 (Lars Petersson).
Siberian Stonechat* Saxicola torquata maura/stejnegeri. A male was seen at Puig de la Mola, Cap de Creus, Girona, the afternoon of 20.5 (Jordi Martí, Mireia Jiménez)It was there at least from 12.5 (Aleix Comes) and it was last seen on 21.5 (Ponç Feliu, Oriol Clarabuch). The 2nd for this area this spring.
Common Bulbul Pycnonotus barbatus. A bird was seen in an Orange-terre orchard near Torrejoncillo, Cáceres on 1.5 (Javier Caballero). Origin uncertain as it seems it's been there for over two years...
Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca On 8.5 a bird was observed at close distance in the outskits of Llanes, Asturias (Luís Carrera). This is a very rare species in the whole of the country.
Woodchat Shrike* Lanius senator badius. A bird was trapped and ringed at Montjuïc mountain, Barcelona, on 13.5 (Cristian Jensen)
Rosy Starling* Sturnus roseus. A brid was seen on 12-13.5 at Cabrera island, Balearics (Rafel/ PN S'Albufera de Mallorca)
