FIVE GREATER SPOTTED EAGLES AT EL HONDO NATURE RESERVE: 2 3RD CAL IND + 2 JUVENILES + AD (1) Alicante Tõnn, the 3w Estonian Greater Spotted Eagle, was seen at El Hondo Nature Reserve every day until 6.11 (Graham Critchell; Urmas Sellis; Ashley Powell). See the interactive migration map of Tonn here and a photo below (G.Critchell). Alson seen on 8.11 (G.Critchell). See a page of him about these eagles here. Seen again on 14 and 18.11,a thumbnail here (Graham Critchell; Ashley Powell). Also on 23.11 (A.Powell) Photo above:© Graham Critchell 4.11.2010.Notice the ptt antenna in its back. (2) Alicante The other subadult 3w Greater Spotted Eagle, named 'Not Tõnn', was seen also at El Hondo Nature Reserve at least until 6.11 (Graham Critchell; Urmas Sellis; Ashley Powell). . (3) Alicante There appears to be a juvenile with the other two subadult birds. Graham Critchell comments: 'Urmas Sellis, from Estonia, visited Hondo a couple of weeks ago and contacted G.Critchell at the weekend. He said that he thought there were 3 present. Having looked at a number of photos of Tonn, the 'sub-adult' bird and the one posted by Ashley Powell (see above), I believe him. In fact there may be 4 present!! Tonn and the 'sub-adult' (Not Tonn) look very similar as mentioned previously. They have one line of white markings in the upper wing, making them 'non-juvenile'. The picture that I took yesterday is of a bird that has 2 lines of white markings, and so is the one Ashley took. This bird (or birds) looks very similar to Tonn last year, so is either a 1st winter or 2nd winter bird(s). The difference could be that Ashleys' bird has a ring on his right leg. The one I saw yesterday, although not in the photo, definitely had a ring on his left leg. (I am assuming all males which is very chauvanistic!!) Urmas mentioned that one of the younger birds could be the younger brother of Tonn.. See a thumbnail of one of these birds here. See a page of him about these eagles here. Seen again on 17.11 (Graham Critchell) and 18.11 (Ashley Powell). This juvenile seen along November was ringed in the RIGHT LEG. This bird could be indeed a brother of Tonn, because it is PVC ringed with a white ring in its right leg as it can be seen in the below image (Ashley Powell) Photo above:© Ashley Powell 1.11.2010. Notice the white PVC ring. (4) Alicante An ADULT Greater Spotted Eagle was seen at El Hondo too on 15-16.11 (Graham Critchell). Seen on 18.11 (Ashley Powell). It is perhaps 5 or 6 years old (G.Critchell). Photographed on 25.11 (Graham Critchell) Photo above:© Graham Critchell 23.11.2010 (5) Alicante Another juvenile was seen on 23.11 and was ringed in its LEFT LEG with a PVC ring. From communications with Urmas in Estonia, we are fairly confident that this new 1st cyr bird is also from Estonia, as it match's there ringing formulas. See two photos below (Ashley Powell) Photos above:© Ashley Powell 23.11.2010.
