Leach's Petrel Oceanodroma leucorrhoa. One bird flying E at playa de Salinas, Asturias, on 2.01 (Daniel López Velasco). On 8.1, one bird beached at Praia da Lançada (Lanzada beach), O'Grove, Galicia. This corpse was eated in the ventral region apparently by Gulls (Larus sp.). Age of corpse: 2-3 days. (Cosme Damiám Romai Cousido). Slavonian Grebe*Podiceps auritus. One bird (probably the same seen in November) at estuario del Minho, A Guarda, Pontevedra, Galicia on 3.01(César Vidal). Two birds, probably those seen at Ebre Delta during this autumn were relocataed on 7.1 at Fangar Bay (David Bigas) and still present on 13-18.1 (David Bigas). One bird with 15 Black-necked Grebes P.nigricollis at Ria de Ferrol, A Coruña, Galicia on 27.1 (Pablo Gutiérrez). Fulmar Fulmaraus glacialis. A bird was seen off Laxe, A Coruña, on 27-28.1 (José Luís Rabuñal). Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus. Wintering record in the N: a male was seen at Llobregat Delta, Barcelona, on 11.1 (F.X.Santaeufemia). The species might be slightly commoner or regular in the S during the winter: e.g another reported on 25.1 at Brazo del Este, Sevilla (F.Chiclana). Great White Egret Egretta alba.
Present at (North to South): Mute Swan Cygnus olor . At Noia harbour, Galiza, a bird was seen on 3.01 (José Miguel Alonso Pumar), and was still there on 17.1 (Miguel Conde). A bird was recorded at Ria de Villaviciosa, Asturies, from 5-12.1 (Ángel González Losa). The two at Aiguabarreig Segre -Cinca (Lleida) reported in November were still there on 12-14.1 (O.Armet pers.com.).Another was at Ria de Pontevedra, Galicia, on 30.1 (Delfín González) Whooper Swan* Cygnus cygnus. The 2 birds found at Camariñas, Galiza on 28-30.12 were still there at least until 3.1(Jordi Martí). Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis. A bird was reported at Mendixur, Álava (Araba), Euskadi, on 30.1 (Karmelo) Dark-bellied Brent Goose Branta bernicla bernicla.A bird was at Ria de Ortigueira, Corunha, Galiza on 6.01(José Miguel Alonso Pumar), still there on 21.1 (Pablo Gutiérrez). Four bird were at Santoña, Cantabria, on 12.1 (Juan Gómez Navedo). Pink-footed Goose* Anser brachyrhynchus. The bird initially seen in November 2000 was still present at Cecebre reservoir, Corunha, Galiza, on 21.1 (Antonio Sandoval). See photos of this bird here. Ruddy Shelduck* Tadorna ferruginea. Two birds were at Laguna de Villafáfila, Zamora from 13.1 (Xosé Pardavila, Diego de Nóvoa, Camilo de Nóvoa, Gonzalo Mucientes Sandoval)to 22.1 at least (Juan Carlos Guerra). They might be the same seen in November . See video-captures of the November birds here.Two birds were still seen in Mallorca around mid month after having arrived after a southern winds period (pers. com. to John Muddeman). American Black Duck* Anas rubipres. The male found on 21.10 at ría de Ortigueira, A Coruña, in company of Mallards was relocated on 21.1 (Pablo Gutiérrez). Green-Winged Teal* Anas carolinensis. A male was seen at laguna de Cospeito, Lugo, Galicia, on 19.1 (Luís José Salaverri) Marbled Teal Marmaronetta angustirostris . Three birds were counted at Canal Vell lagoon, Ebre Delta on 13-17.1 (David Bigas/PNDE). The Ebre Delta has turned up to be the northernmost regular site for the species since last autumn 2000. Mandarin Duck* Aix galericulata. A female was seen at La Guingueta d'Aneu reservoir, Lleida on 13.1 (Jordi Canut). This rare species seems to favour during the winter the Pyrenean axis rather than the coast. Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca. A male was found on 13.1 at Llobregat Delta, Barcelona during the january wildfowl count (F.X.Santaeufemia, E. de Roa).Not relocated on 14.1 (Ricard Gutiérrez). Two were counted in Ebro Delta during the January wildfowl count (13-17.1) (David Bigas/PNDE). A female was found at embalse de As Forcadas, Valdoviño, Galicia from 27-28.1 (Antonio Gutiérrez). Scaup

de Cecebre, Corunha, on 21.1 (Antonio Sandoval). At embalse de Selga de
Ordás, León:
Lesser Scaup* Aythya affinis. On 31.12.2000 - 1.1, the female pair reported at Rouxique grave pits, Sao Genjo (Sao Ginês), Galiza last month are still there, but in the nearby Marisma do Bao (Jorge Pinheiro Alvarez). Ring Necked Duck* Aythya collaris. On 12.1 a drake next to a Common Pochard Aythya ferina was seen in the Rouxique gravel pits (central pool), Sanxenxo, Galicia. This bird was observed in the afternoon during several minutes and at a close range. The following day both birds weren't relocated there, but perhaps would be in the nearby gravel pits (Emílio Martínez Sabarís). Relocated from 19-21.1 at same place (M.Lorenzo, C.Damiam Romai, Jorge Pinheiro) and still there on 31.1(Delfín González). One male was at embalse de Selga de Ordás, León from 19-21.1 (Joan Gomá, Nacho Rodríguez, Carlos Zumalacárregui). King Eider* Somateria spectabilis. The 1st winter male found at Laxe (Laje) harbour, A Corunha, Galiza on 12.12.2000 was still there on 27-28.1 (José Luís Rabuñal). White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala. Staggering count: 4035 birds counted during 2000 breeding season at El Hondo lagoon, Alicante. Perhaps 90% of European population in a single location (SEO/Alicante; Generalitat Valenciana) Long-legged Buzzard* Buteo rufinus. One was reported on 7.1 at La Lantejuela, Sevilla (Francisco Chiclana). Still there on 20.1 (Javier Salcedo). Terek Sandpiper* Xenus cinereus. Overwintering record (first reported in 1998): a bird in Fangar Bay, Ebro delta, Tarragona, from 13-17.1 (David Bigas/PNDE). Temminck's Stint Calidris temminckii. Overwintering record: two birds near Canal Vell lagoon, Ebre Delta, Tarragona, on 7.1 and 10 on 13-17.1(David Bigas/PNDE). Rare so far North in this part of the year. Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis. A bird was at Caño de la Vera -Los Palacios-, Sevilla on 27.1 (Paco Chiclana). Spotted Sandpiper* Actitis macularia. A bird was seen in partly summer plumage on Costa Teguise, Lanzarote, Canaries on 10.1.2001 (Janne Lampolahti). Iceland Gull* Larus glaucoides. A bird was seen at El Abra, Gexto, Euskadi on 29.1 (Gorka Ocio). Ring-billed Gull* Larus delawarensis. At Ria do Burgo, Corunha, two birds initially found on 25.12.2000 were still there on 17.1 (Antonio Sandoval). One adult winter bird was seen at Ria de Ferrol, A Coruña on 27.1 (Pablo Gutiérrez). A 1st winter bird was at El Abra, Bilbao, Euskadi on 30.1 (Karmelo), although up to two have been seen between 7-14.1 at least (J.B.Hormaechea et al). Franklin's Gull* Larus pipixcan. From 5-12.1 two 1st winters were claimed to be seen at El Abra, Getxo, Euskadi (J.B.Hormaechea, Juan G. Astigárraga). Bonaparte's Gull Larus philadelphia. Following last month sighting, a bird was seen at Lluanco, Gozón, Asturies, on 2.I (Pin García Cañal). A first winter was seen at Laxe, A Coruña, on 27-28.1 (José Luís Rabuñal). American Herring Gull* Larus (argentatus) smithsonianus. A first winter was seen at Ria do Burgo, A Coruña, on 31.1 (Antonio Sandoval). Kittiwake Rissa trydactyla. Large concentration: 160 birds were at Cabo Silleiro, Baiona, Pontevedra, Galiza on 2.01 (César Vidal). After a severe gale on 28.1, off Cariño, A Coruña, 126 birds were counted in only 25 minutes. Most of them were 1st winters and c.10-15% were petrolled (José Miguel Alonso Pumar). Little Auk Alle alle. A bird passed in front of Punta das Olas, Caión, Laracha, A Coruña, Galiza on 7.1 (Antonio Sandoval) Pied Wagtail Motacilla (alba) yarellii. A bird was at Caño de la Vera -Los Palacios-, Sevilla on 27.1 (Paco Chiclana). Desert Wheatear* Oenanthe deserti .Probable 1st winter male. Llobregat Delta, Barcelona, inside Barcelona's airport in an unaccessible location. 13.1 but probably there since 3.1 (F.X.Santaeufemia, P. Esteban, E. de Roa). Still present on 17.1, when ringed (F.X.Santaeufemia, F.López, E.Guinart, Ricard Gutiérrez). There are only 3 accepted records for Spain and five more under consideration by the RC. Rose-coloured Starling Sturnus roseus. An adult male was seen entering a Common Starling Sturnus vulgaris roost in front of Marina hotel, Benidorm, Alicante aaround 17.1 (Bo Beolens). The bird could still be there. There are only 6 accepted records for this species in Spain. Little Bunting* Emberiza pusilla. A bird was trapped and ringed at l'estany de les Escoles, Platja d'Aro, Girona on 27.1 (C.Alvarez, M.Alvarez, P.Pons & J.Mª Bas/ Grup Sterna, GCA). This is the third trapped and ringed this autumn/winter in Catalonia. Snow
Bunting Plectrophenax nivalis. Four birds in Baldaio beach are
there since november and were seen on 20.1 (Antonio Sandoval).
