(Fea's) Petrel Pterodroma c.f. feae (1,2-3)
(1) A Coruña. An individual 'sp' was seen at Banco de Galicia fishing area 42°43'N 11°44'W on 13.8 (Albert Cama (Seo/Birdlife) Campanya INDEMARES del IEO).
(2-3) A Coruña. One or two individuals of Pterodroma feae-madeira were seen on board of 'Aula do Mar' off Cariño, A Coruña, on 28.8 (José Miguel Alonso Pumar and others)

Wilson's Storm Petrel Oceanites oceanicus (1-4,5-20,21-66,67)
(1-4) A Coruña. Four were recorded on board of 'Aula do Mar' 20 nautic miles off Cariño, A Coruña on 20.8 (José Miguel Alonso Pumar and others).
(5-20) A Coruña. 15-16 individuals minimum were recorded on board of 'Aula do Mar' off Cariño, A Coruña on 22.8 (José Miguel Alonso Pumar and others).
(21-66) A Coruña. It was regular between 8-24.8 with a maximum of 45 individuals on 20.8 45 (Xulio Valeiras (IEO), Joan Cartes (ICM), Wolf Isbert (Colaborador IEO) y Albert Cama (Seo/Birdlife), Campanya INDEMARES. IEO). See two photos below (A.Cama)

Madeiran Storm Petrel Oceanodroma castro (1,2-4)
(1) A Coruña. A bird was recorded on board of 'Aula do Mar' off Cariño, A Coruña on 22.8 (José Miguel Alonso Pumar and others).See a photo below (Antonio Gutiérrez). Only 5 accepted records in Spain so far (ed. comment).

Brown Booby Sula leucogaster (1)
(1) Cádiz. A bird, perhaps last month Huelva individual, was seen from Playa La Ballena, Rota, Cádiz on 7.8 (Rafael García Costales).
Red-footed Booby Sula sula (1)
(1) Málaga. A bird was seen and photographed off Estepona, Málaga on 11.8 (John Hopkins). There are photos and a description has been submitted to the Spanish Rarities Committee. See a special identification and photopage here.
Presumed
Hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta (1,2)
(1) Tarragona. There was a bird showing intermediate characters between both species at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 13.8 (Jordi Martí-Aledo) The Tancada hybrid was seen again on 1.8 and 17.8 and may well be the same bird seen at Punta de la Banya (Roser Solé, Josep Tantull, see a photo below)

(2) Cádiz. There was a bird at Codo de la Esparraguera, Trebujena, Cádiz on 9.8 (Pablo Galiano).See a photo below (P. Galiano). The bird was seen and photographed again on 11.8 (José Luis Arroyo). This individual moves between this area and Veta la Palma, Sevilla (J.L.Arroyo). See a photo below and two thumbnails here.

(1) Cádiz. There was one at Los Barrios dump, Cádiz, on 20.8 (Phil Chantler & Jack Chantler). See a photo below (P.Chantler)

White-rumped Sandpiper Calidris fuscicollis (1)
(1) València One adult was seen and photographed at Reserva Natural del Tancat de Milia, Sollana, PN Albufera de València on 4.8 (Toni Alcocer). The bird was not seen on 5.8 but relocated on 6.8, when photographed again (Toni Alcocer). See three photos below. The 2nd for the Albufera.

Broad-billed Sandpiper Limicola falcinellus (1,2,3)
(1) València OWhile looking for the previous White-rumped Sandpiper, one bird was found at the same site: Reserva Natural del Tancat de Milia, Sollana, PN Albufera de València on 5.8 (Toni Alcocer). See two photos below and a thumbnail here (Toni Alcocer).

(2) Tarragona On 7.8 morning a bird was found at El Goleró, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé) and 17.8 (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé, see a thumbnail here) to 19.8 (Juan Carlos Andrés, see two photos below).

(3) Tarragona On 12.8 a different individual according to plumage characteristics was seen at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre (Jordi Martí-Aledo)
Hudsonian Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus hudsonicus (1) SECOND FOR SPAIN (Cat.A)
(1) Cádiz A bird was seen from from Playa La Ballena, Rota, Cádiz on 7.8 (Rafael García Costales).

(1) A Coruña On 3.8 a juvenile was found at laguna de Vixán, Parque Natural de Corrubedo, A Coruña (Manu Polo Aparisi).
Red-necked
Phalarope* Phalaropus lobatus (1,2-5,6)
(1) Ciudad Real On 13.8 a juvenile was found at el complejo lagunar de Alcázar de San Juan, Ciudad Real (José Gómez Aparicio).
(2-5) Tarragona. There were 3 adults and a juvenile at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 8.8 (Jordi Martí-Aledo) There were two at Punta de la Banya too but visible from the public hide on the beach on 15.8 (Roser Solé, Josep Tantull). See a thumbnail here.
(6) Cádiz. On 8.8 one was seen at Salinas de Bonanza en Sanlucar de Barrameda, Cádiz (Pablo Galiano). See a photo here.

Long-tailed Skua Stercorarius longicaudus (1,2,3,4-5,6-12,13,14,15-17)
(1) A Coruña. One adult was seen on migration from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, on 7.8 (Alfonso Valderas,Antonio Sandoval y Ricardo Hevia). The 2nd for the season.
(2) A Coruña. One juvenile, the 1st of the season, was seen on migration from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, on 11.8 (Alfonso Valderas,Antonio Sandoval y Ricardo Hevia).
(3) A Coruña. One adult was seen on migration from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, on 20.8 (Antonio Sandoval,Alfonso Valderas y Ricardo Hevia).
(4-5) A Coruña. Two adults were seen on migration from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, on 21.8 (Antonio Sandoval,Alfonso Valderas,Oscar Llama y Quique Carballal)
(6-12) A Coruña. 6-7 individuals minimum were recorded on board of 'Aula do Mar' off Cariño, A Coruña on 22.8 (José Miguel Alonso Pumar and others).See a photo of one adult below (Antonio Gutiérrez).

(13) A Coruña. An adult was seen on migration from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, on 26.8 (Alberto Savijn, Antonio Sandoval, Alfonso Valderas, David Martínez Lago, Dani López Velasco, Guillermo Rodríguez, Ricardo Hevia)
(14) A Coruña. An adult was seen on migration from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, on 28.8 (Ricardo Hevia and 20 more)

Iceland Gull Larus glaucoides (1)
(1) Pontevedra The same individual reported from June 2009 at the ría de Vigo and seen again in 2010 was seen again on 4-5.8 at southern Vigo beaches (Quique Carballal).See the Quique's chronicle including images here. Seen again on 16 and 26.8 at Arenal de Calzoa, Coruxo, Vigo (Quique Carballal)
Glaucous Gull Larus hyperboreus (1)
(1) A Coruña There was a 2cy on 3.8 at playa de Bens, A Coruña (José Ramón Sánchez Bugallo)

Royal Tern Sterna maxima (1)
(1) Tarragona. An adult was fishing on discards along with other terns and gulls at L'Ametlla de Mar harbour, Tarragona on 25.8 (Juan Carlos Andrés). The individual flew to the S after eating a fish (see enclosed photos below and two thumbnails here). Not seen on 27.8 (J.C. Andrés, R.Gutiérrez)

Lesser Crested Tern Sterna bengalensis (1,2-4,5,6)
(1) Málaga. There was a bird at Guadalhorce river mouth on 5.8 (Birgit Kremer). See a photo from her blog here or her entire blog entry here.
(2-4) Málaga. There were 3 at Guadalhorce river mouth on 13.8 (R.C.N. Wright, Birgit Kremer, Eduardo Antunez, Paco Rivera, Uberto, Ted & Antonio Miguel Pérez)
(5) Cádiz. There was an adult on 6.8 at Salina de la Tapa, El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz (Rafael García Costales, Carlos Gutiérrez Expósito). Presumably the same bird still there on 11.8 (Rafael García, Mario Martín, Manolo Villaécija, Andrés Requejo y Paco Chiclana). Presumably this individual was joined by another on 12.8 (Juan Sagardía, Andrés Requejo y Rafael García)
(6) Cádiz. On 12.8 there were two at Salina de la Tapa, El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz (Juan Sagardía, Andrés Requejo y Rafael García). See two thumbnails here (R.García)

Orange billed-tern Sterna sp. c.f. elegans type (1-2)
(1) Cádiz. The bird ringed with PVC at Valencia and seen last month at Huelva was seen at both Salinas de la Tapa and San Pedro river roost, Cádiz on 10.8 (Rafael García Costales). There is a youtube video here. Still on the same site on 11.8 (Rafael García, Mario Martín, Manolo Villaécija, Andrés Requejo y Paco Chiclana). See photos below (R.García Costales). Still in the area withouth the juvenile on 12.8 (Juan Sagardía, Andrés Requejo y Rafael García) but again with it on 14.8 (Oscar Llama, Mireia Herránz y Rafael García) and 16.8 and 18.8 (Rafael García Costales)

(2) Huelva. It is not clear if the bird above or another was at Odiel marshes, Huelva on 27.8 (José Manuel Méndez). See a thumbnail here.
Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii (1-7,8,9-10,11,12,13-16,17-22)
(1-7) Huelva. There were seven at 7 adults at Espigón de las Marismas del Odiel, Huelva on 8.8: all but one ringed. Four were in summer plumage, one was moulting to winter plumage and two already in winter plumage (Carlos Gutiérrez Expósito). On 9.8 there were four adults (Paco Chiclana, Mario Martín). (8) Cádiz. There was an unringed bird on 8.8 at San Pedro river mouth, Puerto Real, Cádiz (Rafael García Costales). Seen again on 10.8 (Rafael García Costales).
(9-10) Cádiz. There were two adults on 2.8 at Salina de la Tapa, El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz (Rafael García Costales). One was ringed in both tarsi. Presumably these birds seen again on 6.8 (Rafael García Costales, Carlos Gutiérrez Expósito) and 11.8 when 3 were recorded (Rafael García, Mario Martín, Manolo Villaécija, Andrés Requejo y Paco Chiclana). Still there on 12.8 (Juan Sagardía, Andrés Requejo y Rafael García).The ringed bird was trapped and controlled in a ringing session and turned up to be a BTO ringed individual (see a thumbnail here).
(11) Cádiz. There were three adults on 6.8 at Salina de la Tapa, El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz (Rafael García Costales, Carlos Gutiérrez Expósito). One was ringed in both tarsi so its considered to be one of birds (9-10) and the other two were unringed so at least one new bird (11). Perhaps this or another was at the same site on 11.8 when 3 were recorded (Rafael García, Mario Martín, Manolo Villaécija, Andrés Requejo y Paco Chiclana) and on 12.8 (Juan Sagardía, Andrés Requejo y Rafael García).
(12) Cádiz. There was an unringed adult changing its bill colour from black to red on 10.8 at Salina de la Tapa, El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz (Rafael García Costales, see a photo below).

(13-16) Cádiz. There were SEVEN ADULTS of which 3 ringed in both tarsi on 14.8 at Salina de la Tapa, Cádiz (Oscar Llama, Mireia Herránz y Rafael García). Given the presence of three birds of which one ringed until 12.8, at least there are by 14.8 2 new ringed adults and 2 unringed birds.Of presumably those, 5 remained on 16.8 (Rafael García Costales). (17-22) A Coruña. Six birds were seen on migration from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, on 28.8 (Ricardo Hevia and 20 more)

Little Swift Apus affinis (1-2,3-6,7-11)
(1-2) Cádiz. There were at least 2 flying at Chipiona beaches on 3.8 (Rafael García Costales). Still present on 21.8 (Phil Chantler & Jack Chandler, see below).
(3-6) Cádiz. There were at least 6 flying at Chipiona on 21.8 (Phil Chantler & Jack Chandler). See a photo below (P.Chantler).

(1) Gran Canaria. On 16.8 a juvenile was photographed at Bocabarranco, Telde, Gran Canaria (Xabier Remírez). See a photo below and a thumbnail here.

Otherwise, non submitted or rejected records will be deleted and ringings will not be included in national or international databases. Ringers not submitting rare bird ringings will be listed. Submitting ringing records is hence specially encouraged as a contribution to global bird knowledge..

From March
2005 this webpage only includes records of birds needing homologation
by CR/SEO. For other local rarities contact local bird reports or records
committees. See here those rarities only for the
Canary Islands also dealt by CR/SEO. Changes in application to the rarity
list from January 2006. New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex,
Sterna bengalensis and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus
richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and are not be included
from 2006.
Recent
reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are
both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail
lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else
than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded
to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does
not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent. Gibraltar news are
included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society
but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this
area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors
of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with
a icon. We would welcome to receive
a spare copy of those journals using these news for commercial purposes.
Contact RG at address at the front page. From April 2005 only news of rarities
needing homologation by the Spanish Rarities Committee are included. Reproduction
