Fulvous Whistling Duck Dendrocygna bicolor (1) UNKNOWN ORIGIN
(1) Asturies The bird found at Nora reservoir, San Pedro de Nora on 26.3 was seen again on 12.5 (Clemente Alvarez Usategui)
King EiderSomateria spectabilis (1) FIFTH FOR SPAIN
(1) Murcia. A female King Eider surprisingly appear at Riera de Albujón, Mar Menor, Murcia, on 14.5 (Antonio Hernández). A photopage with further details and photos is under construction. The bird remained in the area on 18.5 although behaving even less confidingly (Antonio Hernández).
Surf ScoterMelanitta perspicillata (1)
(1) Asturies. A 1st summer female was found on 5.5 at playa de L´Arbeyal, Gijón, Asturies (Yolanda Marcos Aparicio y Jose Laureano Álvarez Ramos). The bird was seen again on 6.5 (Daniel López Velasco, Marco García). See a photo below and two thumbnails here (D.L.Velasco)
Smew Mergus albellus (1-2)
(1-2) Cantabria. Perhaps the same two birds found on 28.12 at La Riva, Pantano del Ebro, Cantabria and present at same place during January 2010 were surprisingly seen again on 22.5 at La Lastra peninsula within an abandoned reservoir within Fundación Alto Ebro (Charo Diez, Jesús Mª Berroeta and others). In 1985, after having January records in the Llobregat delta, Barcelona, a drake surprisingly reappeared in early May 1985 in the same area, without having been seen in the meantime (ed.comment).

Grebe Podilymbus podiceps (1)
(1) Cáceres. A surprising record of a bird in a pond near Trujillo was broadcasted through the Westpalbirds mailing list on 13.5 (via K.Vinicombe).It was seen again on 14.5 just outside Trujillo on the way to Huertas de la Magdalena (Jesús Porras;Pieter Vantieghem).See a photo on the Aves de Extremadura blog here. Hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta (1,2,3,4,5)
(1) Tarragona. The presumed hybrid that frequents the Tancada saltpans, at Ebre delta, where it is seen intermitently, was seen again on 2.5 (Ricard Gutiérrez). See two photos below and two thumbnails here.
(2) Girona. There was an almost white, but patched dark grey bird, at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà on 2.5 (Marc Gàlvez, José Guerra). See two photos below and one thumbnail here (M.Gàlvez)
(3) Cádiz. There was a bird at Trebujena marshes, Cádiz, on 15.5, different from the bird at Cádiz marshes (Alberto Savijn)
(4) Alicante. A dark bird with white feathering in the wings plus all dark bill was seen at El Hondo area on 22.5 (Ashley Powell)
(5) València A bird, probably one of those seen at L'Albufera in previous months, was recorded within the heron colony at the same site on 15.5, despite it's not confirmed it was actually breeding or not (Carlos Oltra). See a photo below (C.Oltra).
(6) Cádiz. The 'usual' Cadiz bay bird was seen on 27.5 flying over A - 4 between San Carlos y San Jaime and Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados saltpans, Puerto Real, Parque Natural Bahía de Cádiz (Rafael García Costales)

(1) Cádiz There was one at Tarifa, at El Mirador, on 16.5 (Richard Banham/Milvus GOES)
(2) Cádiz One individual was seen ENTERING FROM AFRICA in direct flight from the Straits of Gibraltar on 16.5 (Pako Zufiaur). See a photo below (P.Zufiaur).

Broad-billed Sandpiper Limicola falcinellus (1)
(1) Tarragona. There was a bird at Platjola - Serrallo ricefields, Delta de l'Ebre, on 5.5 (Manolo García-Tarrasón). Seen also the same afternoon (Jordi Martí-Aledo). Great Snipe Gallinago media (1,2)
(1) Girona. There was one bird at El Matà area, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà on 2.5. It was seen both hidden in the marshes and in flight, showing well the tail shape (Lluís Gustamante).
(2) Girona. There was a bird on 5.5 at 'camp del Seixanta', PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (Àlex Ollé; Teresa Montràs, Enric Capalleras, Berto Minobis, Joaquim Camps).

(1) Zaragoza From 18-20.5 an individual remained at Quinto de Ebro ricefields, Zaragoza (Manuel Galán). It's the 2nd record for Aragon. See photos and thumbnails here (Manuel Galán).
Wilson's Phalarope Phalaropus tricolor (1)
(1) Gipuzkoa On 25.5 ab bird was discovered near the information center of Urdaibai marshes reserve, Gipuzkoa (Aitor Galarza et al).
American Herring Gull Larus smithsonianus (1) FOURTH FOR SPAIN
(1) Madrid The same 2w found at Colmenar Viejo dump, Madrid on 7.2 (-see its special february photopage here) was relocated in the Pinto dump, Madrid on 1.5 (Juan M.Ruiz) and 2.5 (Delfín González, Javier Marchamalo). (1) Pontevedra The same individual reported from June 2009 at the ría de Vigo and seen again in 2010 was seen again on 9.5 at southern Vigo beaches (Xulio Valeiras)

(1) Huelva There was an adult at La Antilla beach, Huelva on 7.5 (Normal Elkins)

Orange billed-tern Sterna sp. c.f. elegans type (1)
(1) Valencia. The male bird showing elegans features seen in previous years in the area and in Ebre delta marked with PVC ring in 2006 was seen mating a Sandwich Tern S.sandvicensis from 4-6.5 at Racó de l'Olla, PN Albufera de València, València (J.I.Dies). (1-4) Cádiz There were four at Bolonia on 16.5 (Richard Banham/Milvus GOES)
(5-9) Cádiz There were five flying at Chipiona beach, Cádiz, on 1.5 (Rafael García Costales)
Black-headed Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava feldegg (1-2)
(1-2) Illes Balears Two individuals were spotted within a flock of 50 Yellow Wagtails at Cabrerar island, Balearics (Clemente Álvarez Usategui).
Citrine Wagtail Motacilla citreola (1)

(1) Illes Balears. A male was seen at Cabrera islands, Balearics on 2.5 (Clemente Álvarez Usategui).
Eastern Bonelli's Warbler Phylloscopus orientalis (1) SECOND FOR SPAIN
(1) Barcelona An individual was trapped and ringed at Remolar-Filipines reserve, Llobregat Delta, Barcelona on 13.5 (Marcel Gil). See two photos below and two thumbnails here (Marcel Gil).
Collared Flycatcher Ficedula albicollis (1,2)
(1) Illes Balears A male was seen and photographed at Cases Velles, Formentor, Mallorca, on 7.5 (Hans Jorgen, Jaume Aveledo, Lalo Ventoso) and 8.5 (Maties Rebassa, Juanjo Bazan, Susana Quintanilla, Maria de la Llosa, Pep Manchado y Maties Rebassa). See a thumbnail here.
(2) Illes Balears A 2nd male, showing old primaries and a mark in the supercilium, thus different from bird (1) was seen and photographed at Cases Velles, Formentor, Mallorca, on 8.5 morning (Juanjo Bazán).See two thumbnails here.
Rosy Starling Sturnus roseus (1)
(1) Tarragona On 1.5 one was found at Eucaliptus beach, while driving along the main road (Ricard Gutiérrez, Gerard Gutiérrez). Seen again ten minutes later. Then, and after calling some local observers, relocated an hour later in the same wide area (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé, Ricard Gutiérrez) when photographed on an Eucaliptus tree.

Submitting ringing records is hence specially encouraged as a contribution to global bird knowledge..

birds featured in this page are rarities needing homologation by the CR/SEO
From March
2005 this webpage only includes records of birds needing homologation
by CR/SEO. For other local rarities contact local bird reports or records
committees. See here those rarities only for the
Canary Islands also dealt by CR/SEO. Changes in application to the rarity
list from January 2006. New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex,
Sterna bengalensis and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus
richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and are not be included
from 2006.
Recent
reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are
both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail
lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else
than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded
to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does
not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent. Gibraltar news are
included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society
but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this
area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors
of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with
a icon. We would welcome to receive
a spare copy of those journals using these news for commercial purposes.
