(1-2) Cantabria The two 2nd winters at Santoña, Cantabria from last month were still there on 4.2.2010 (Alejandro García Herrera) and 6.2 (Yves Borremans) to 16.2 (Alejandro García-Herrera).

Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus (1)
(1) Ávila. The bird found at Laguna del Oso, El Oso, Ávila on 24-25.12.2009 was relocated there on 3.2 (Juan Ramón Cuervo, Jose María García Jimenez, Jose Rodríguez Matías).Still there on 14.2 (Juan Ramón Cuervo)

Green-winged Teal Anas carolinensis (1,2,3)
(1) Girona A drake was found at La Massona lagoon, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona on 7.2 (Jordi Martí Aledo; Ramon Faura). See a photo below (R.Faura). Still at La Massona, in front of Bruel hide, on 23.2 (Jordi Martí Aledo). The drake was relocated at Closa del Puig, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà on 27.2 (Teresa Montràs & Jordi Martí-Aledo).

(2) A Coruña The drake seen at ensenada de Feás, Ortigueira, A Coruña on 31.1 remained there on 5.2 (Antonio Gutiérrez). See a thumbnail here.

American Black Duck Anas rubripes (1)
(1) Lugo.The Pepiño American Black duck was at Ría de Foz on 20.2 (David Calleja, Toño Salazar)

Blue-winged Teal Anas discors (1)
(1) Lugo. The drake found at Lago, Xove, Lugo on 25.12 was still there on 20.2 (David Calleja, Toño Salazar). See a photo below (T.Salazar)

Ring-necked Duck Aythya collaris (1,2)
(1) Lleida-Huesca The drake found at an irrigating pond at Alcarràs, Lleida then seen at Mas Blanc pond, Huesca, was seen again at the latter place on 9.2 (Sergi Sales) and 10.2 (S.Sales, Ricard Gutiérrez).

(2) León A female was found at Azud de Sahechores, Rueda, León, on 20.2 (Héctor Astiárraga, Soraya de Elera Andrés). Description already sent to CR/SEO BirdLife.

Bufflehead Bucephala albeola (1) 3RD FOR SPAIN
(1) Cantabria. The bird seen in January was still on 28.2.2010 at Marisma Blanca, Santander, Cantabria (F.Javier Portillo). See a thumbnail here.

Goosander Mergus merganser (1,2)
(1) A Coruña. There was a bird at ria d'O Burgo, A Coruña on 3.2 (Xabier Varela)

(2) Asturies/Lugo There was a female between Abres, Vegadeo, and Xesteira, San Tirso de Abres, at Eo river, Asturias on 10-11.2 (Pablo Fernández). See a photo below and two thumbnails here. On 20.2 it was seen again (David Calleja, Toño Salazar).

Pied-billed Grebe Podilymbus podiceps (1)
(1) Lugo. The resident bird at Riocaldo lagoons, Begonte, Lugo was still there on 9.2 (David Calleja). On 23.2 it was already in summer plumage at the same place (Toño Salazar). A thumbnail here.

Presumed Hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta (1,2,3)
(1) València. A bird was seen at marjal de El Tremolar, Valencia, within Parc Natural de l'Albufera, on 1.2 (Bosco Dies). See a photo below (Bosco Díes).

(3) Cádiz. The bird at Salinas de Cádiz was seen again on 14.2. See a photo below and more photos at Rafael García Costales blog here.

(3) Tarragona. The presumed hybrid that frequents the Tancada saltpans, at Ebre delta, where it is seen intermitently, was spotted the afternoon of 25.2 (Ricard Gutiérrez). See a photo below

Lesser Flamingo Phoenicopterus minor (1,2,3,4)
(1) Cuenca/ Ciudad Real There was a bird at Laguna de Manjavacas, Cuenca, on 6.2 (Rodolfo Velasco). Very probably the same bird was at Laguna de la Veguilla, Alcázar de San Juan, Ciudad Real on 20.2 (Xurxo Piñeiro, Gabriel Martín, Mª José Valencia; Rodolfo Velasco et al.).

(2) Cádiz There was a bird at Salinas de Santa Teresa, Espacio Natural Doñana, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz, on 11.2. This bird might be one of those seen last month at Veta La Palma (José Luis Arroyo). See three thumbnails here.

(3) Tarragona. A single bird, not present during January winter count, was seen within the large amount of overwintering Greater Flamingos at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre from 15-19.2 (Carles Domingo)

(4) Sevilla There was a bird at complejo endorreico de la Lantejuela, Sevilla on 28.2 (Manolo Villaécija)

(1) Cádiz The bird overwintering at Los Barrios, Cádiz, was seen and photographed on 7.2 (Javier Elorriaga).See two thumbnails here.

Greater Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga (1,2)
(1) Alicante The Estonian eagle Tõnn was seen again at El Hondo on 3.2.2010, see a photo below, near an escaped African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus), thumbnail here, sharing the same trees (Graham Critchell).Seen again on 6.2 (Gabriel de Jesús, Alba Casals, Anna Mayol, Gerard Dalmau).On 10.2 (Graham Critchell) and 13.2 it was seen again (Graham Critchell, Richard Howard).Seen again on 13.2 (Graham Critchell) and 18.2 (Vicente Esteller, Loida Simón Antón).It was seen again in company of the 2nd intermitently-seen eagle on 27.2 (Graham Critchell; Pablo Fernández).

(2) Alicante A 2nd Great Spotted Eagle, probably the same seen intemitently during the last months, was seen at El Hondo lagoon on 27.2 (Graham Critchell).

Gyrfalcon Falco rusticolus (1)
(1) Asturies A 1w was photographed at the coast of Asturies, N Spain during february 2010. Details of the observation have been supressed by the original authors to avoid the bird being twitched. Only after its departure, some photos of the bird have been released at Juan Sagardia's blog here. See a photo below kindly provided by the author.

Sociable Plover Vanellus gregarius (1,2)
(1) Sevilla On 5.2 one individual was seen at Olivillos, Puebla del Río, Sevilla in the same place where another or the same was found last november 2009 (Alfonso Barragán; Paco Chiclana)

(2) Girona On 20.2, a bird was found at Tres ponts area, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (Toni Alonso). Seen later by more observers (Àlex Ollé, Jordi Martí-Aledo, Marta Sancho, Mª José Larios, Gerard Dalmau, Albert Roca).See a photo below and a thumbnail here (Àlex Ollé).The bird was seen again on 26.2 at Reserva Natural Integral Els Estanys of PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà (Jordi Martí-Aledo).

Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus (1)
(1) Almeria The bird found at Cabo de Gata saltpans the weekend 16-17.1 was still there on 6.2 (Raimundo Martín) and on 27.2 (Pablo Fernández) and 28.2 (Juan Pérez-Contreras). See a videocapture below

Baltic Gull Larus fuscus fuscus (1,2)
(1) Málaga On 7.2 the adult bird ringed C1KV at Finland, was seen one month more at Málaga harbour (Salvador García; Miguel Domínguez Santaella). See two photos below (M.Domínguez).The bird was seen again on 27.2, when photographed too (Salvador García). See a photo below.

American Herring Gull Larus smithsonianus (1) FOURTH FOR SPAIN
(1) Madrid There was a 2w at Colmenar Viejo dump, Madrid on 7.2 (Delfín González). See a photo below and a special photopage here (D.González). The bird was relocated at Pinto dump, Madrid on 26.2 (Javier Marchamalo). Finding this gull is almost mission impossible given the number of gulls around Madrid these days. Caspian Gull Larus cachinnans (1,2,3,4,5,6-7,8,9)
(1) València There was a 3rd winter at El Malvinar ricefields, Sueca, P.N. de l'Albufera on 6.2 (Dániel Hegedüs, Goyo Chaguaceda y Bosco Dies). See a photo below (Bosco Díes) and more information on the sighting at Birding Albufera website here.

(2) Madrid There was a 1w at Colmenar Viejo dump, Madrid on 7.2 (Delfín González). See a photo below and three thumbnails here and a video below (D.González). The bird was seen again on 14.2 (Miguel Juan Martínez, Delfín González).

(4) Girona There was a 1w of this species at Solius dump, Santa Cristina d'Aro, Girona on 13.2 (Carlos Álvarez, see a photo below). On 14.2 other probable individuals yet under study, were recorded (C. Álvarez).

(5) Madrid There was a 1w at Colmenar Viejo dump, Madrid on 21.2 (Delfín González). It was the same individual recorded previously in the area on 5.1.2010. See a photo below. This individual was spotted again on 28.2 (Delfin González)

(6-7) Girona There were 2 1w at Aiguamolls de l'Empordà beach on 15.2 (Àlex Ollé, Jorge García). One of the birds was already there on 23.1 23.I (Àlex Ollé, Marc Bertran, Enric Capalleras i Joaquim Martínez).See a thumbnail here.

(8) A Coruña On 15.2 one 2w (3rd calendar year) was at Lago de A Frouxeira, Valdoviño, A Coruña (Antonio Gutiérrez). See photos here, here and here.

(1) Pontevedra The same individual reported during august and coming from June 2009 and probably 24.1.2009 at the ría de Vigo and seen again on 15.2 at playa de A Calzoa, Vigo (Xulio Valeiras)

(1-2) Sevilla There were two at Sierra Morena de Sevilla, on 7.2 (Rafael Romero).

BELTED KINGFISHER Ceryle alcyon (1) FIRST FOR SPAIN AND SOUTH EUROPE.
(1) Murcia.The bird at Murcia relocated on January was seen again on 1.2 and 4.2 (Antonio Jesús Hernández Navarro) and 5.2 (Graham Critchell). See photos below and thumbnails here. The bird was seen on 1-4.2 in a third pond (labelled 3 below) different from sites (1) reported earlier in this page and also from site (2) where it was seen by Richard Bonser and Lee Gregory last month. Seen also during the weekend 6.2 (Gerard Dalmau,Gabriel de Jesús, Alba Casals, Anna Mayol).On 7.2 (Cristina Prieto, Adrián Plaza, Jordi Sala) at pond 3 and on 13.2 between ponds 2 and 3 (see map below, Antonio Jesus Hernandez, María José Valencia y Xurxo Piñeiro) the bird was seen again. Paddyfield Warbler Acrocephalus agricola (1)
(1) Tarragona One bird that had been trapped and ringed on 20.12.2009 was recaptured on 6.2.2010 at Riet Vell reserve, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Jordi Feliu, Ana Lopez, Ignasi Ripoll, Roger Sanmarti, Ana Dalmau, Albert Lozano, Oriol Muntane, Anne-Marie Andersen, Max B. Pedersen, Annelise Jensen, Cristian Jensen, et. al). There is a picture of the original ringing below (Ignasi Ripoll) and a thumbnail of the recapture here (Cristian Jensen).

Otherwise, non submitted or rejected records will be deleted and ringings will not be included in national or international databases. Ringers not submitting rare bird ringings will be listed. Submitting ringing records is hence specially encouraged as a contribution to global bird knowledge..

Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent. Gibraltar news are included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with a icon. Latest highlights:

This is not the Estonian eagle Tonn. But it shared the same trees! An African Grey Parrot shared ground at El Hondo with the famous Greater Spotted Eagle on 3.2. What a contrast... (Graham Critchell)

The Green-winged Teal at ría de Ortigueira, A Coruña (Antonio Gutiérrez)

The overwintering Long-legged Buzzard at Los Barrios, Cádiz as on 7.2 (Javier Elorriaga).
