(1-3) Cantabria The two 2nd winters at Santoña, Cantabria from last month were still there on 4.1.2010 (Máximo Sánchez).Besides, another from Santander bay was reported from 29.12.2009 to 5.1.2010 (Máximo Sánchez). On 21.1 the two birds remained at Satoña (Alejandro García Herrera; Isidoro Fombellida; Ángel Ruiz). Seen again on 28.1 (Alejandro García Herrera).

Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus (1,2,3-4)

(1-2) Lugo.The Pepiño American Black duck was at Ría de Foz on 16.1 (Luis José Salaverri) and on 23.1 (Toño Salazar), this last day with one of its sons. On 30.1 Pepiño was still there (Luis José Salaverri)

(1) Lleida The drake found at an irrigating pond at Alcarràs, Lleida on 15.12 was still there on 2.1 (Marc Gàlvez, José Guerra). (1) Pontevedra. The immature found on 12.12 at A Lanzada bay, O Grove/Ogrobe, with a Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis remained in the area (also with the Clangula) on 2.1.2010 (David Álvarez, Sin-Yeon
Kim y Alberto Velando). Seen again on 8.1 at the same place and with the Long-tailed Duck (Juan Carlos Cabrero y Belén García) and around midday of 9.1 (Alvaro Rodríguez Pomares) when it was photographed (see two photos below and two thumbnails here). Seen also on 16.1.2010 (C. D. Romai).

(1) Cantabria. On 7.1.2010 morning a drake was found and photographed at Marisma Blanca, Santander, Cantabria (Luis Eduardo Molina, Sheila García, Isaac Villaverde). (2) A Coruña The drake previously featured in December 2009 at several places at Ría da Coruña was observed on 6.1 and 7.1 at A Coruña harbour (Belén Lorenzo; Gabriel Pérez, Paula Pérez) and at nearby San Antón castle (seafront at A Solana), A Coruña on 8.1 (David Díaz Seoane, Cosme D. (1) Tarragona. A bird not seen before was recorded in the Ebro delta near Poble Nou, Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 1.1. (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé). See two photos below.
(3) Cádiz. On 12.1, there was one individualclose to Barriada Meadero de La Reina, Bahia de Cadiz Rio Zurraque area, Cadiz, Andalucia (Stephen Daly, Waine Foster, Susan Edwards). Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus (1)
(1) Cádiz The bird seen at Los Barrios, Cádiz from 4-15.11.2009 was at the same place on 15.1.2010. This bird had already overwintered the previous season 2008-2009 and it may well be a case of a resident 'former' vagrant (Javier Elorriaga)
Greater Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga (1,2,3)
(1) Alicante The Estonian eagle Tõnn was seen again at El Hondo on 1.1.2010, see a photo below (Graham Critchell). Seen again on 23.1 at El Hondo's northern gate (communication to Graham Critchell; Mª José Valencia, Xurxo Piñeiro).Seen again on 27.1 (Graham Critchell) and 28.1 (Óscar Aldeguer Peral) and 30.1, this late day with another subadult featured in previous months (Graham Critchell).
(2) Albacete There was another Great Spotted Eagle, paler than the above individual, at Pareje canal de la Lobera, Albacete, on 20.1 (Elvira Serna / Econima). See a photo below and three thumbnails here.
(3) Alicante There was a subadult, seen also intermitently before at El Hondo reservoir on 30.1. It was seen also with the Estonian eagle Tõnn (Graham Critchell)
African Swamphen Porphyrio (porphyrio) madagascarensis (1) FIRST FOR SPAIN
(1) Lanzarote The individual of this subspecies of the Purple Swamphen sometimes regarded as different species found exhausted at at Gran Canaria on 2.10.2009 and released into the wild at Charca de Maspalomas, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria on 25.10, then seen in the island of Lanzarote at campo de golf de Tías on 31.12, at 230 km distance and 54,56º NE direction, was still at the same site the days 1 to 4.1.2010. (1) Tarragona On 6.1 an adult in winter plumage was seen and photographed within the Tarragona harbour. See stunning photos in the Albert Cama's blog here.The bird was seen on 9.1 at platja dels Prats, Vila-Seca, just to the S of the Tarragona harbour (Albert Cama, Camil Albert i Bernat Iglesias).

(1) Cantabria There was a 1w at Marisma Negra, Cantabria, on 7.1 (Ángel Ruiz). Seen again on 8.1 (Juan Manuel Pérez de Ana). Seen still in the area on 16.1 (Javier Gómez Aoiz, Antón Pérez y Guillermo Rodríguez).See two photos below (J.Gómez Aoiz). Still there on 30.1 (Yves Borremans)
(2) Asturies The same bird seen last year from March to November at ría de Avilés then on December 2009 was seen again on 4.1 at Avilés harbour (Antonio Ceballos, Daniel López Velasco, Clemente Álvarez Usategui). See a thumbnail here.

(6) Illes Balears. An adult presumably of this species was seen on 13.1 at Palma de Mallorca harbour (Maties Rebassa). See three thumbnails here.

(2) Madrid. The 1st for Madrid was at Pinto dump on 2.1 (Juan Ruiz). The same individual had been seen in Talavera de la Reina, Toledo, on 31.12.2009 (Óscar Frias). (1) Murcia.The bird last seen at Murcia on 6.12 was relocated after some weeks of search on 4.1.2010 (Miguel Ángel Muñoz) and 5.1.2010 (Miguel Ángel Muñoz, Antonio Jesús Hernández). The individual had left the Mar Menor coast to fish in a more cost/benefit favourable area: the irrigating ponds in the area, 15,39 km to the East of the initial site. From March
2005 this webpage only includes records of birds needing homologation
by CR/SEO. For other local rarities contact local bird reports or records
committees. See here those rarities only for the
Canary Islands also dealt by CR/SEO. Changes in application to the rarity
list from January 2006. New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex,
Sterna bengalensis and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus
richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and are not be included
from 2006.
Recent
reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are
both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail
lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else
than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded
to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does
not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent. Gibraltar news are
included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society
but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this
area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors
of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with
a icon. We would welcome to receive
a spare copy of those journals using these news for commercial purposes.
