Identification Great Snipe at Llobregat Delta, Barcelona, 22.5.2002 and the problems regading acceptance of this taxon from the Spanish Rarities Committee Text
by Ricard Gutiérrez. Descriptions by RG and Ferran López
Introduction
Photos below show a male presumed hybrid Aythya ferina x Aythya fuligula? or Aythya ferina x A.nyroca observed at Urkulu - Aretxabaleta resevoir, Gipuzkoa, Euskadi, between 8 and 11 July 2001 by José Miguel Devesa and Edurne Narzabal. Rather chestnut coloured pointed head, darker than that of a regular Pochard Aythya ferina. This impression was enhanced depending on light angle and in some cases the head appeared nearly black. The eye was strikingly yellow and the mantle was grey not pale. The head showed some kind of a peak between the nape and crown (see photos below) Cabeza
At first sight, the bird recalls a Redhead Aythya americana. However, the pattern of the bill is wrong for that species (without subterminal band), the head is differently shaped, being more peaked, and the mantle is darker. Notice
here the dented aspect of head
In this
way head could resemble that of Redhead but bill shape and mantle colours
are wrong
Here
the inusual proportions of bill/head are clearly visible. Black undertail
coverts would speak against Ferruginous duck parentage?
