Introduction

On 30.9 while doing some footing, F.Javier García Vargas noted an odd bird calling and flying by at Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote, Canary Islands. He knew it had to be something odd but he could not return to the area on the 1st of October 2015. The bird was relocated and, indeed it was rare: the 2nd-ever Bobolink Dolichonyx oryzivorus for the Canary Islands and Spain (Francisco Javier García Vargas).

The author broadcasted the news and during the day Tenerife photographer David Pérez managed to reach the area and see the bird. On 2.10.2015 further authors, with the finder, saw and photographed the bird again (Francisco Javier García Vargas, Julio Rodríguez, Antonio Unquiles). See photos below from 1 and 2.10.2015.

Previous and sole record of the bird for Spain was that of an individual seen and photographed on 21-23 October 2010 at Tias golf course, Lanzarote island too, Canaries by Juan Sagardía, the same Francisco Javier García Vargas and Antonio Unquiles. This individual remained in the island at least until december 2010.

This record coincides with the peak migration of the species at Florida (see below) where during these observation dates hurricane Joaquin has been very active. It seems feasible that the combination of the hurricane presence with the migration of the speces is after its arrival to Lanzarote. Given Joaquin persistence and current (as to 2 October 2015) weather conditions in the Atlantic, it might be possible that further nearctic birds would be drifted to the E Atlantic shores.

Editorial comment

The arrival of the Bobolink has coincided with the peak movement of the species through the S states of USA. The images below, taken from eBird website show the records of the species in N America from June-July, August, September and October. These movements have coincided in time with hurricane 'Joaquin', located between Cuba and Florida and causing severe weather in the area. It is almost certain that the combination of these two factors are after the presence of this american individual in the Canary islands. And who knows how many more perished into the Atlantic in between (ed.comment).
