Introduction

On 7.8 a Sand Plover was found at Salinas de Janubio, Lanzarote by the authors. There were discussions on the specific id of the bird but it was agreed it was an adult female Lesser Sand Plover of the atrifons ssp. The authors have provided a number of photos for future reference of this bird and, hopefully, others to come.

There are two previous records. One at Alcázar de San Juan, Ciudad Real, on 21.6.1981 (Tom Gullick et al) and the 2nd, and 1st for the Canary Islands, a male at Salinas de Fuencaliente, La Palma Island from 27-30.8.2003 (J.M.Castro). It is interesting to note, then, that the 1st Canary record is also from August.
