Introduction

On 23.3.2014 an adult Grey-headed gull was found at Pinto dump, Madrid, within a large group of gulls (Juan M. Ruiz). The bird was photographed and first photos were included in March 2014 page of Rare Birds in Spain. This is the 4th record for Spain and 3rd for the mainland, the last from 2013 (also an adult) but previous from 1971 at Doñana and, in the Canary islands, in 2005 (see references below).

Since the observation place is out of boundaries except for a group of authorised observers (Madrid Gull Team), the bird could not be twitched by anyone. However, within the regular monitoring scheme held in those Madrid dumps, the adult was relocated again at the same dump on 28.3.2014 (Javier Marchamalo) and 29.3.2014 (Miguel Juan Martinez, Mercedes Fernández Lamadrid, Delfín González), when better photos and video footage were obtained (see below and on Delfín González blog here for even more photos and the Madrid Gull Team blog). The possibility of the bird being an escape was discarded and it is believed it is of a natural origin. It is a pity for would-be observers but dump restrictions in the area seem to be very high. Attempts to find the bird elsewhere nearby have also failed. Fortunately there is good documentation on the sighting!
