Last sunday 7th February 2010 at Colmenar Viejo dump, Madrid, I saw what it's the rarest bird I've ever seen in Madrid: a 2nd winter American Herring Gull. After videotaping and photographing a 1w Caspian Gull (3rd this year in Madrid), I saw a darker gull, with some Herring gull characters. Soon afterwards I noticed the marked rump, a very wide terminal dark tail band and an extremely pale inner primaries.

I decided to take photos of the bird instead of observing it and I identified it as a 2w Herring. It was most of the time fighting with Lesser-black Backed Gulls (L.fuscus) and it was very agressive. It flew several times and I noticed how striking was its barred rump and the pale inner windows in the innermost primaries. I did not consider at any moment the possibility of having an American Herring Gull at Madrid!.

Already at home, and reviewing the photos, I realised that it was not any Herring but it certainly looked like an American Herring of 3rd calendar year (2nd winter).

I sent the photos to Daniel López Velasco and Gull research forum. Soon, the Dutch colleagues discarded any Herring and thought it was an American Herring. Also Daniel L.Velasco thought the same. On 8.2 the id was confirmed by Pat Lonergan, Killian Mullarney and several members of the ORG forum.

This is the 4th American Herring Gull for Spain and the 1st of a 2nd winter.
