Birds in Spain
Photos by Oriol Muntané Llaveria Comments edited by Ricard Gutiérrez On 16.8.2009 the first observer to see the presumed hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta was Oriol Muntané, a photographer visiting the Remolar-Filipines Nature Reserve early in the morning, just when open to the public. Oriol had seen in 1993 with Ricard Gutiérrez an Elegant Tern in the same delta and now frequents the area to photograph its wildlife. Interestingly, the bird was seen and photographed close to a Little Egret, allowing direct comparisons that, besides, were captured through the camera. Given the interest in documenting this sort of sightings, an special page in this website is devoted to this bird which according to its brand new plumage seems a juvenile coming from abroad since none of the two species has bred in the delta (Little Egret bred in year 2000 only). This report has been submitted to the CR/SEO-BirdLife. See a compilation of the photos of the bird below. Photos © Oriol Muntané
