Introduction 

A 1w bird was found at Maspalomas pond, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, on 26.12 having reached the area after severe weather conditions (Eugenio Hernández; Miguel Avelino). This area is frequented by (the scarce) local observers who took the opportunity of taking the superb included photos below which certainly can help as reference for any possible further claim of this stunning species elsewhere.

The record fails within the expected observation dates of the species in S Europe, coinciding with the dry season in W Africa, moment in which birds leave their breeding areas (De Juana,E 2006. Aves raras de España. Lynx eds.)
