Introduction
The
Ebre Delta (Delta del Ebro in Spanish, Delta de l'Ebre in Catalan) is the
only regular place in Spain where Lesser-crested Tern Sterna bengalensis
breeds.
In past times it had bred in l'Albufera de València where, as in
the case of the Ebre delta, depending on years, hybrid pairs with Sandwich
Terns (Sterna bengalensis) were formed.
In 2003
(see recent reports section) three adult Lesser Crested Terns were reported
in Ebre delta since early may (see a photo
here). Of those, one formed a pure pair and another a hybrid pair with
Sandwich Tern.
The
pure pair was seen with one chick all July long (David Bigas) when two
photos, one of an adult and another of an adult plus one chick from the
pure pair were taken on 12.7 (David Bigas). The other hybrid pair S.bengalensis
x
S.sandicensis produced a chick seen on 29.6 to 1.7 and finally ringed
on 2.8, also featured below (David Bigas, Francesc Vidal, Julia Piccardo
et al)
