Bonaparte's Gull (Larus philadelphia) at Castro Urdiales, February 2003: 1st for Cantabria.

Photos  by Juan Manuel Pérez de Ana
Text by Ricard Gutiérrez based on JM Pérez de Ana notes.

Introduction

On 9.2.2003, Juan Carlos Lorenzo Rodolfo visited the harbour of his village, Castro Urdiales, Cantabria and found an adult Bonaparte's Gull Larus philadelphia. The following days it was seen and photographed by Juan Manuer Pérez de Ana and others.

The bird was either on the rocks or the beach of Brazomar beach, near the harbour. It was associated to Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus groups

The colour and shape of bare parts, structure and plumage does tell the species from the closely related Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus.
