Introduction
This
autumn there have been three records of Baird's Sandpiper (Calidris
bairdii) at Galicia, NW Spain: one bird at ensenada da Insua, Ponteceso-Cabana
on late September (J.L.Rabuñal); one juvenile was found in company
of a Semipalmeated Sandpiper (Calidris pusilla) on 21.10 at laguna
de Traba, Laxe, A Coruña (José Luís Rabuñal
Patiño). This bird latter presumably moved to Laxe beach (c. 5 km
distance) where it was relocated on 27.10 (Pablo & Antonio Gutiérrez).
A second bird, an adult moulting into winter plumage was located on 22.10
at Playa Ladeira, Baiona,Pontevedra (César Vidal), well S of the
former bird depicted in the next photos.
Since
this is one of the scarcest American waders reaching Spain. There are only
five accepted previous records up to year 2000:
-
Canary
Islands, Golf del Sur, Tenerife, 21-oct-1990 (JA.Lorenzo)
-
Galicia.
Laguna de Traba, A Coruña. 01-nov-1994 (JL.Rabuñal)
-
Canary
Islands. Punta de Rasca, Tenerife. 23-nov-1992 (Cartwright)
-
Galicia.
Ensenada da Insua, A Coruña. 20-ago-88 (JL. Rabuñal)
-
Galicia.
O Grove, Pontevedra, 01-nov-1996 (C.D.Romay)
So lasting
late august late november, with most of birds, as these two new records
from late october-early november.
